Abstract: In this paper, we study combinatorial and structural properties of a new class of finite and infinite words that are 'rich' in palindromes in the utmost sense. A characteristic property of the so-called rich words is that all complete returns to any palindromic factor are themselves palindromes. These words encompass the well-known episturmian words, originally introduced by the second author together with Droubay and Pirillo in 2001 [X. Droubay, J. Justin, G. Pirillo, Episturmian words and some constructions of de Luca and Rauzy, Theoret. Comput. Sci. 255 (2001) 539-553]. Other examples of rich words have appeared in many different contexts. Here we present the first unified approach to the study of this intriguing family of words. Amongst our main results, we give an explicit description of the periodic rich infinite words and show that the recurrent balanced rich infinite words coincide with the balanced episturmian words. We also consider two wider classes of infinite words, namely weakly rich words and almost rich words (both strictly contain all rich words, but neither one is contained in the other). In particular, we classify all recurrent balanced weakly rich words. As a consequence, we show that any such word on at least three letters is necessarily episturmian; hence weakly rich words obey Fraenkel's conjecture. Likewise, we prove that a certain class of almost rich words obeys Fraenkel's conjecture by showing that the recurrent balanced ones are episturmian or contain at least two distinct letters with the same frequency. Lastly, we study the action of morphisms on (almost) rich words with particular interest in morphisms that preserve (almost) richness. Such morphisms belong to the class of P-morphisms that was introduced by Hof, Knill, and Simon in 1995 [A. Hof, O. Knill, B. Simon, Singular continuous spectrum for palindromic Schrodinger operators, Comm. Math. Phys. 174 (1995) 149-159].

Abstract: Convincingly establishing the determinants of student evaluation of teaching (SET) scores has been elusive, largely because of inadequate statistical methods and a paucity of data. The author uses a much larger time span than in any previous research—607 economics classes over 17 semesters. This permits a proper treatment of unobserved heterogeneity. Results indicate that instructors can buy higher SET scores by awarding higher grades. In principles classes, the level of experience of the instructor and the class size are found to be significant determinants of SET scores. In upper-division classes, the type of student and the response rate matter. In both types of classes, factors specific to courses, instructors, and time periods are important; adjustments of scores to remove these influences may be warranted.

Abstract: Two new instruments created to assess perceptions of science, Technology, engineering, and Math (sTeM) disciplines and careers are analyzed and found to have respectable to excellent internal consistency reliability, as well as good content, construct, and criterion-related validity for the areas assessed. Cronbach’s alpha for the individual scales on the sTeM semantics survey and the sTeM Career interest Questionnaire ranged from .78 to .94 across the eight constructs represented. These scores were judged to be acceptable to assess anticipated changes resulting from Middle schoolers out to save the World (MsosW) iTesT project activities, and are believed to be worthy of use by other iTesT projects.

Abstract: Methods and systems for indoor navigation utilize a smartphone equipped with various sensors. When a person whose initial position is unknown, and in some circumstances whose sight has been impaired, specifies a destination, the navigation system will calculate the coordinates of his/her present location from the sensor readings. It will then calculate the distance to be traveled to the destination and form routes to direct him/her towards the desired location. These steps are carried out using sensor readings and in some cases magnetic maps of the interiors of buildings stored on the smartphone. In some cases dynamic time warping (“DTW”) is used to align a recorded signature of the person's movement through the building with a stored magnetic map in order to identify the person's location within the building.
