Abstract: This paper discusses what local governments must do to prepare for various disasters, including terrorist attacks. It provides background information on preparedness and highlights lessons from prior research. It also identifies the process of establishing local ordinances, assessing risk, creating emergency operations plans, acquiring resources, instituting mutual aid agreements, training, exercising and educating the public. Finally, it concludes with recommendations to implement these preparedness measures.

Abstract: A major force affecting many forest ecosystems is the encroachment of residential, commercial and industrial development. Analysis of the complex interactions between development decisions and ecosystems, and how the environmental consequences of these decisions influence human values and subsequent decisions will lead to a better understanding of the environmental consequences of private choices and public policies. Determining conditions of the interactions between human decisions and natural systems that lead to long-term sustainability of forest ecosystems is one goal of this work. Interactions between human stakeholders are represented using multi-agent models that act on forest landscape models in the form of land-use change. Feedback on the effects of these actions is received through ecological habitat metrics and hydrological responses. Results are presented on the dynamics of land-use change under different growth management strategies based on an area of the Dallas-Fort Worth (Texas, U.S.A.) region facing intense residential development.

Abstract: Background—Although there have been few studies in which the hemodynamic effects of right ventricular (RV) and left ventricular (LV) pacing were compared with those of biventricular (BV) pacing, the autonomic changes during these different pacing modes remain unknown. We hypothesized that BV pacing results in improved hemodynamics and a decrease in sympathetic nerve activity (SNA) compared with single-site pacing. Methods and Results—Thirteen men with a mean ejection fraction of 0.28±0.7 were enrolled in the study. Arterial blood pressure (BP), central venous pressure (CVP), and SNA were recorded during 3 minutes of right atrial (RA)-RV, RA-LV, and RA-BV pacing at a rate 10 beats faster than sinus rhythm. BP was greater during LV (151±7/85±3 mm Hg) and BV (151±6/85±3 mm Hg) pacing than during RV pacing (146±7/82±3 mm Hg) (P<0.05). There were no differences in CVP among all pacing modes (P=0.27). Abstract: Explanatory models of malingering strive to understand the primary motivation underlying attempts to feign. Rogers, Sewell, and Goldstein (1994) provided empirical support for the conceptualization of pathogenic, criminological, and adaptational models. In the current study, a prototypical analysis of 221 forensic experts results in a slightly refined formulation: the adaptational model was decomposed into its two broad dimensions (cost–benefit analysis and adversarial setting). An important finding is that the factor structure for the explanatory models remained stable when applied to both forensic and nonforensic cases. As a first investigation, significant differences were observed in prototypical cases of malingering by the category of referral (forensic or nonforensic) and by type of feigning (mental disorders, cognitive impairment, and medical syndromes). Surprisingly, the feigning of medical syndromes appeared to play a relatively prominent role in both forensic and nonforensic cases and to be influenced by the apparent adversarial context of the assessment. Finally, important gender differences were observed, especially with nonforensic prototypical cases of malingering.
