Abstract: The present meta-analysis examines the effect of grade retention on academic outcomes and investigates systemic sources of variability in effect sizes. Using multilevel modeling (MLM), the authors investigate characteristics of 207 effect sizes across 22 studies published between 1990 and 2007 at two levels: the study (between) and individual (within) levels. Design quality is a study-level variable. Individual-level variables are median grade retained and median number of years postretention. Quality of design is associated with less negative effects. Years postretention is negatively associated with retention effects, and this effect is stronger for studies using grade comparisons versus age comparisons. The results challenge the widely held view that retention has a negative impact on achievement. Suggestions for future research are discussed.

Abstract: Experimental solubilities are reported for carbazole dissolved in binary mixtures containing tetrahydropyran with n-hexane, n-heptane, clyclohexane, isooctane, n-hexadecane and t-butylcyclohexane at 25°C. Results of these measurements, along with published carbazole solubilities in ten alkane + dibutyl ether mixtures, are used to test two mathematical representations based upon the combined Nearly Ideal Binary Solvent (NIBS)/Redlich-Kister equations and Modified Wilson model. For the systems studied, the Modified Wilson equation is found to be the better two-parameter mathematical representation with deviations between experimental and back-calculated values being on the order of ± 3% or less. The NIBS/Redlich-Kister representation requires up to four adjustable “curve-fit” parameters to describe the solubility data.

Abstract: Partition coefficients of 51 organic compounds in two ionic liquids (IL), 1-ethyl-3-methylimidazolium dicyanamide and trimethylhexylammonium bis((trifluoromethyl)sulfonyl)amide, were measured using inverse gas chromatography from (322.5 to 352.5) K. These partition coefficients were converted into water-to-IL partition coefficients using the corresponding gas-to-water partition coefficients. Both sets of partition coefficients were analyzed using the Abraham solvation parameter model with cation-specific and anion-specific equation coefficients. The derived equations correlated the experimental gas-to-IL and water-to-IL partition coefficient data to within (0.12 and 0.14) log units, respectively.

Abstract: This study explored the relationship between academic mentoring behaviors and the organizational socialization of new faculty members within the communication discipline. Participants included 259 faculty members from the National Communication Association. Results indicated that mentors' tendencies to provide support and encouragement, a sense of collegiality, and research assistance are related to an organizational newcomer's feelings of connectedness and ownership with the work environment. Overall, the results suggested that the benefits of mentoring are reciprocal and benefit the institution as well as the prot\'eg\'e.
