Abstract: We carried out an extensive survey of wave function and DFT methods to test their accuracy on geometries and dissociation energies of halogen bonds (XB). For that purpose, we built two benchmark sets (XB18 and XB51). Between the DFT methods, it was found that functionals with high exact exchange or long-range corrections were suitable for these dimers, especially M06-2X, ωB97XD, and double hybrids. Dispersion corrections tend to be detrimental, in spite of the fact that XB is considered a noncovalent interaction. Wave function techniques require heavy correlated methods (i.e., CCSD(T)) or parametrized ones (SCS-MP2 or SCS(MI)MP2). Heavy basis sets are needed to obtain high accuracy, such as aVQZ or aVTZ+CP, and ideally a CBS extrapolation. Relativistic ECPs are also important, even for the bromine based dimers. In addition, we explored some XB with new theoretical tools, the NCI (“Non-Covalent Interactions”) method and the NOFF (“Natural Orbital Fukui Functions”).

Abstract: This study examines the role of social network ties in the performance and receipt of interpersonal citizenship behavior (ICB), one form of organizational citizenship behavior (OCB). A field study involving 141 employees of a manufacturing firm provided evidence that social network ties are related to the performance and receipt of ICB. Results support hypothesized relationships, which are based on social exchange theory, suggesting strength of friendship is related to performance and receipt of ICB. Support was also found for impression management-based hypotheses suggesting that asymmetric influence and 3rd-party influence are related to the performance and receipt of ICB. These relationships were significant when controlling for job satisfaction, commitment, procedural justice, hierarchical level, demographic similarity, and job similarity. Implications and directions for future research are addressed.

Abstract: We present X-ray source catalogs for the ≈7 Ms exposure of the Chandra Deep Field-South (CDF-S), which covers a total area of 484.2 arcmin2. Utilizing wavdetect for initial source detection and ACIS Extract for photometric extraction and significance assessment, we create a main source catalog containing 1008 sources that are detected in up to three X-ray bands: 0.5-7.0 keV, 0.5-2.0 keV, and 2-7 keV. A supplementary source catalog is also provided, including 47 lower-significance sources that have bright (Ks ≤ 23) near-infrared counterparts. We identify multiwavelength counterparts for 992 (98.4%) of the main-catalog sources, and we collect redshifts for 986 of these sources, including 653 spectroscopic redshifts and 333 photometric redshifts. Based on the X-ray and multiwavelength properties, we identify 711 active galactic nuclei (AGNs) from the main-catalog sources. Compared to the previous ≈4 Ms CDF-S catalogs, 291 of the main-catalog sources are new detections. We have achieved unprecedented X-ray sensitivity with average flux limits over the central ≈1 arcmin2 region of ≈1.9 ×10-17, 6.4 ×10-18, and 2.7 ×10-17 erg cm-2 s-1 in the three X-ray bands, respectively. We provide cumulative number-count measurements observing, for the first time, that normal galaxies start to dominate the X-ray source population at the faintest 0.5-2.0 keV flux levels. The highest X-ray source density reaches ≈50,500 deg-2, and 47% ± 4% of these sources are AGNs (≈23,900 deg-2). (Less)

Abstract: Caspase-3 is a member of the cysteine protease family, which plays a crucial role in apoptotic pathways by cleaving a variety of key cellular proteins. Caspase-3 can be activated by diverse death-inducing signals, including the chemotherapeutic agents. The purpose of this study was to determine the levels of caspase-3 expression in breast tumor samples and to determine whether alterations in its expression can affect their ability to undergo apoptosis. Primary breast tumor and normal breast parenchyma samples were obtained from patients undergoing breast surgery and the expression of caspases-3 was studied. Similarly, normal mammary epithelial cells and several established mammary cancer cell lines were studied for caspases-3 expression by reverse transcriptase-polymerase chain reaction, Northern blot analysis, and Western blot analysis. Approximately 75% of the tumor as well as morphologically normal peritumoral tissue samples lacked the caspase-3 transcript and caspase-3 protein expression. In addition, the caspases-3 mRNA levels in commercially available total RNA samples from breast, ovarian, and cervical tumors were either undetectable (breast and cervical) or substantially decreased (ovarian). Despite the complete loss of caspase-3, the expression levels of other caspases, such as caspase-8 and caspase-9, were normal in all of the tumor samples studied. The sensitivity of caspase-3-deficient breast cancer (MCF-7) cells to undergo apoptosis in response to doxorubicin and other apoptotic stimuli could be augmented by reconstituting caspase-3 expression. These results suggest that the loss of caspases-3 expression may represent an important cell survival mechanism in breast cancer patients.
