Abstract: Information pertaining to the stereochemistry of metalloporphyrins and other tetrapyrroles continues to expand. The present article reviews important developments of this structural chemistry. Detailed updates on the relationship of the structure and physical properties of iron derivatives are given. Metalloporphyrins with unusually high or low oxidation states are reviewed. Surveys of recent work on π-cation radical complexes, bound O2 species, tetrapyrroles with N-substituents, the stereochemistry of ring-reduced tetrapyrroles and a variety of novel species are given. Newly developed data concerning experimental electron density studies are summarized. Detailed reviews of porphyrin-porphyrin (π-π) interactions in the solid state are given. A variety of important conformational aspects of metalloporphyrins and their consequent results on physical properties are presented. Finally, a number of isomorphous series and crystal packing effects in tetrapyrroles have been detailed.

Abstract: Model evaluation is one of the most important aspects of structural equation modeling (SEM). Many model fit indices have been developed. It is not an exaggeration to say that nearly every publication using the SEM methodology has reported at least one fit index. Most fit indices are defined through test statistics. Studies and interpretation of fit indices commonly assume that the test statistics follow either a central chi-square distribution or a noncentral chi-square distribution. Because few statistics in practice follow a chi-square distribution, we study properties of the commonly used fit indices when dropping the chi-square distribution assumptions. The study identifies two sensible statistics for evaluating fit indices involving degrees of freedom. We also propose linearly approximating the distribution of a fit index/statistic by a known distribution or the distribution of the same fit index/statistic under a set of different conditions. The conditions include the sample size, the distribution of the data as well as the base-statistic. Results indicate that, for commonly used fit indices evaluated at sensible statistics, both the slope and the intercept in the linear relationship change substantially when conditions change. A fit index that changes the least might be due to an artificial factor. Thus, the value of a fit index is not just a measure of model fit but also of other uncontrollable factors. A discussion with conclusions is given on how to properly use fit indices.

Abstract: The hypocholesterolemic and anti-atherosclerotic mechanism by which soy may exert a beneficial effect remains unclear. Peroxisome-proliferator activated receptors (PPAR) are promiscuous nuclear receptors that regulate the transcription of genes involved in lipid and glucose homeostasis and lipid metabolism within the cell. We hypothesize that the isoflavones improve lipid and glucose metabolism by acting as an antidiabetic PPAR agonist. Male and female obese Zucker rats (OZR) were used as a model of Type 2 diabetes, and OZR fed a high isoflavone soy protein diet displayed improvements in lipid metabolism consistent with results in humans treated with antidiabetic PPAR agonists such as the fibrates or glitazones. Liver triglyceride and cholesterol concentrations were lower in all OZR fed high-isoflavone soy protein diets than in rats fed low-isoflavone and casein diets (P < 0.05). Concurrently, PPAR-directed gene expression was evaluated in a cell culture model. An isoflavone-containing soy extract doubled PPAR-directed gene expression (P < 0.05) in RAW 264.7 cells containing either a PPARalpha or PPARgamma expression plasmid. A similar induction was observed when the soy isoflavones genistein or daidzein were used to treat cells. Both isoflavones doubled PPARalpha-directed gene expression (P < 0.05), whereas they increased PPARgamma-directed gene expression 200-400% (P < 0.05). This study suggests that soy isoflavones improve lipid metabolism, produce an antidiabetic effect, and activate PPAR receptors.

Abstract: The study of the spin-parity and tensor structure of the interactions of the recently discovered Higgs boson is performed using the H to ZZ, Z gamma*, gamma* gamma* to 4 l, H to WW to l nu l nu, and H to gamma gamma decay modes. The full dataset recorded by the CMS experiment during the LHC Run 1 is used, corresponding to an integrated luminosity of up to 5.1 inverse femtobarns at a center-of-mass energy of 7 TeV and up to 19.7 inverse femtobarns at 8 TeV. A wide range of spin-two models is excluded at a 99% confidence level or higher, or at a 99.87% confidence level for the minimal gravity-like couplings, regardless of whether assumptions are made on the production mechanism. Any mixed-parity spin-one state is excluded in the ZZ and WW modes at a greater than 99.999% confidence level. Under the hypothesis that the resonance is a spin-zero boson, the tensor structure of the interactions of the Higgs boson with two vector bosons ZZ, Z gamma, gamma gamma, and WW is investigated and limits on eleven anomalous contributions are set. Tighter constraints on anomalous HVV interactions are obtained by combining the HZZ and HWW measurements. All observations are consistent with the expectations for the standard model Higgs boson with the quantum numbers J[PC]=0[++].
