Abstract: The CMS muon detector system, muon reconstruction software, and high-level trigger underwent significant changes in 2013–2014 in preparation for running at higher LHC collision energy and instantaneous luminosity. The performance of the modified system is studied using proton-proton collision data at center-of-mass energy √s=13 TeV, collected at the LHC in 2015 and 2016. The measured performance parameters, including spatial resolution, efficiency, and timing, are found to meet all design specifications and are well reproduced by simulation. Despite the more challenging running conditions, the modified muon system is found to perform as well as, and in many aspects better than, previously. We dedicate this paper to the memory of Prof. Alberto Benvenuti, whose work was fundamental for the CMS muon detector.

Abstract: The recent emphasis on cognitive factors in the treatment of emotional problems has stimulated the development of cognitive assessment techniques. This paper presents the development and initial validation of an instrument to assess self-statements about social interactions. The 30-item questionnaire contains 15 positive (facilitative) and 15 negative (inhibitory) self-statements that were derived from subjects who listed thoughts while imagining difficult social situations. Item selection was accomplished by using judges' ratings of those thoughts. Validity studies with two samples compared scores on the self-statement measure with self-report, judges' and confederates' ratings of skill and anxiety following taped role-play and face-to-face interactions, and with questionnaire measures of social anxiety and skill. The measure appears to be a reliable, valid measure of cognitions associated with social anxiety. Research directions in cognitive assessment are suggested.

Abstract: Latent variable models exist with continuous, categorical, or both types of latent variables. The role of latent variables is to account for systematic patterns in the observed responses. This article has two goals: (a) to establish whether, based on observed responses, it can be decided that an underlying latent variable is continuous or categorical, and (b) to quantify the effect of sample size and class proportions on making this distinction. Latent variable models with categorical, continuous, or both types of latent variables are fitted to simulated data generated under different types of latent variable models. If an analysis is restricted to fitting continuous latent variable models assuming a homogeneous population and data stem from a heterogeneous population, overextraction of factors may occur. Similarly, if an analysis is restricted to fitting latent class models, overextraction of classes may occur if covariation between observed variables is due to continuous factors.
