Abstract: Natural convection adjacent to horizontal surfaces of circular, square, rectangular, and right triangular planforms has been studied experimentally. Electrochemical techniques were employed involving a fluid with a Schmidt number of about 2200. The results encompass a wide range of Rayleigh numbers thus providing information on both the laminar and the turbulent regimes. The data for all planforms are reduced to a single correlation in the laminar and turbulent regimes using the characteristic length, as recommended by Goldstein, Sparrow, and Jones. L* = A/p, where A is the surface area and p is the surface perimeter. The laminar data for all planforms are correlated by the expression Sh = 0.54 Ra1/4 (2.2 × 104 ≤ Ra ≤ 8 × 106) and the data for the turbulent regime are correlated by the expression Sh = 0.15 Ra1/3 (8 × 106 ≤ 1.6 × 109) Transition is found to occur at about Ra = 8 × 106 . The present work thus significantly extends the Rayleigh number range of validity for the use of L* through the 1/4 power laminar regime into the turbulent 1/3 power regime. It also demonstrates the validity of the use of L* to correlate natural convection transfer coefficients for highly unsymmetrical planforms, which heretofore had not been demonstrated. Comparisons to analytical solutions and other experimental heat and mass transfer data are presented.

The analysis is based on 442 fb^-1 of integrated luminosity collected at PEP-II with the BABAR detector at e+e- center-of-mass energies near 10.6 GeV.

Abstract: This paper proposes a network coding approach to cooperative diversity featuring the algebraic superposition of channel codes over a finite field. The scenario under consideration is one in which two ldquopartnersrdquo - node A and node B - cooperate in transmitting information to a single destination; each partner transmits both locally generated information and relayed information that originated at the other partner. A key observation is that node B already knows node A's relayed information (because it originated at node B) and can exploit that knowledge when decoding node A's local information. This leads to an encoding scheme in which each partner transmits the algebraic superposition of its local and relayed information, and the superimposed codeword is interpreted differently at the two receivers i.e., at the other partner and at the destination node, based on their different a priori knowledge. Decoding at the destination is then carried out by iterating between the codewords from the two partners. It is shown via simulation that the proposed scheme provides substantial coding gain over other cooperative diversity techniques, including those based on time multiplexing and signal (Euclidean space) superposition.

Abstract: ARF6-regulated endocytosis of E-cadherin is essential during the disassembly of adherens junctions in epithelial cells. Here, we show that activation of ARF6 promotes clathrin-dependent internalization of E-cadherin and caveolae at the basolateral cell surface. Furthermore, we demonstrate that ARF6-GTP, a constitutively activate form of ARF6, interacts with and recruits Nm23-H1, a nucleoside diphosphate (NDP) kinase that provides a source of GTP for dynamin-dependent fission of coated vesicles during endocytosis. Finally, we show that ARF6-mediated recruitment of Nm-23-H1 to cell junctions is accompanied by a decrease in the cellular levels of Rac1-GTP, consistent with previous findings that Nm23-H1 down-regulates activation of Rac1. These studies provide a molecular basis for ARF6 function in polarized epithelia during adherens junction disassembly.
