TL;DR: The results suggest that narrow graphene pores functionalized with hydroxyl groups remain effective at excluding Cl(-) ions even at moderate solution ionic strength, which could be useful for the design of water desalination membranes.
Abstract: Molecular dynamics simulations were employed to study the transport of water and ions through pores created on the basal plane of one graphene sheet (GS). Graphene pore diameters ranged from 7.5 to 14.5 A. Different pore functionalities were considered, obtained by tethering various functional groups to the terminal carbon atoms. The ease of ion and water translocation across the pores was monitored by calculating the potential of mean force along the direction perpendicular to the GS pore. The results indicate that effective ion exclusion can be achieved only using nonfunctionalized (pristine) pores of diameter ∼7.5 A, whereas the ions can easily penetrate pristine pores of diameters ∼10.5 and 14.5 A. Carboxyl functional groups can enhance ion exclusion for all pores considered, but the effect becomes less pronounced as both the ion concentration and the pore diameter increase. When compared to a carbon nanotube of similar pore diameter, our results suggest that GS pores functionalized with COO– groups a...

TL;DR: In this paper, the complementary energy method is applied to the free vibration analysis of various structural components, including prismatic and tapered bars, prismatic beams, and axisymmetric motion of circular membranes.
Abstract: Two approximate methods, which have not previously been used for structural dynamics problems, are applied to the free vibration analysis of various structural components. The first method is a new version of the complementary energy method. It is shown to be considerably more accurate than the conventional Rayleigh and Rayleigh-Schmidt methods when applied to spatially one-dimensional free vibration problems: prismatic and tapered bars, prismatic beams, and axisymmetric motion of circular membranes. The second method is the differential quadrature method introduced by Bellman and his associates. It is applied successfully here to all of the problems mentioned plus square membranes and circular and square plates.

TL;DR: Some typical application scenarios of edge computing in IIoT, such as prognostics and health management, smart grids, manufacturing coordination, intelligent connected vehicles (ICV), and smart logistics, are introduced.
Abstract: The Industrial Internet of Things (IIoT) is a crucial research field spawned by the Internet of Things (IoT). IIoT links all types of industrial equipment through the network; establishes data acquisition, exchange, and analysis systems; and optimizes processes and services, so as to reduce cost and enhance productivity. The introduction of edge computing in IIoT can significantly reduce the decision-making latency, save bandwidth resources, and to some extent, protect privacy. This paper outlines the research progress concerning edge computing in IIoT. First, the concepts of IIoT and edge computing are discussed, and subsequently, the research progress of edge computing is discussed and summarized in detail. Next, the future architecture from the perspective of edge computing in IIoT is proposed, and its technical progress in routing, task scheduling, data storage and analytics, security, and standardization is analyzed. Furthermore, we discuss the opportunities and challenges of edge computing in IIoT in terms of 5G-based edge communication, load balancing and data offloading, edge intelligence, as well as data sharing security. Finally, we introduce some typical application scenarios of edge computing in IIoT, such as prognostics and health management (PHM), smart grids, manufacturing coordination, intelligent connected vehicles (ICV), and smart logistics.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors investigate cases in which venture capitalists have managerial agents on their boards whose goals conflict with those of the investment bank agents hired to underwrite the stock, and develop theory on agent differences based on time horizons and risk taking by managerial agents as framed through behavioral agency theory.
Abstract: We contribute to multiple agency theory by examining cases in which ventures making initial public offerings (IPOs) have managerial agents on their boards whose goals conflict with those of the investment bank agents hired to underwrite the stock. Underwriters have an incentive to underprice IPOs to maintain strong ties with institutional investors. We develop theory on agent differences based on time horizons and risk taking by managerial agents as framed through behavioral agency theory. Examining governance mechanisms, we find both monitoring by board insiders and board experience decrease underpricing. Furthermore, underpricing increases when venture capitalists have prior ties with underwriters.
