TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that it is strictly incorrect to refer to an isotherm containing the configurational term θ/x(1 − θ)x as the "Flory-Huggins isotherms" since Flory Huggins statistics leads to a different form for the configural term, viz that containing ex−1, as above.

TL;DR: In this article, the vibrational energy level spacings of the electronic ground states of H2 + and D2 + at the adiabatic level of approximation are presented.
Abstract: New calculations are presented for the vibrational energy level spacings of the electronic ground states of H2 + and D2 + at the adiabatic level of approximation. A second-order perturbation method is used to find the non-adiabatic corrections to these spacings. The relevance of these results to the discrepancies between the observed and calculated vibrational spacings for H2 is discussed.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of disorder-induced valence-conduction band mixing on the conduction-band effective mass in small-band-gap III-V alloys has been analyzed.
Abstract: The conduction-band effective mass in small-band-gap III-V alloys has been observed to be heavier than would be expected from a standard $\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{k}}\ifmmode\cdot\else\textperiodcentered\fi{}\stackrel{\ensuremath{\rightarrow}}{\mathrm{p}}$ calculation in the virtual-crystal approximation. Here we analyze the effect of disorder-induced valence-conduction band mixing on this effective mass. It is found that with a consistent set of assumptions for interband and intraband mixing, one can account for the variation of the band gap, the spin-orbit splitting, and the conduction-band mass in these alloys.

TL;DR: These rare cancers, histologically indistinguishable from the ordinary basal cell carcinoma, are, from their onset, either biologically more aggressive or occur in patients with a lower tumor host resistance.
Abstract: Thirty-three horror basal cell carcinomas (18 large, six destructive, five locally uncontrollable, and four metastatic) were studied in detail. In comparison with a series of non-horror cases, it was found that there were more horror cases in men and that the age of onset of horror tumors was earlier. The anatomical site was the same. Basic etiological factors included habitual sun exposure in 13, mustard gas burns in two, and one each of radioermatitis, trivalent arsenic ingestion and naevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome. Fifteen had no obvious cause. It could not be shown that initial treatment with radiotherapy caused any change in the biological nature of the cancer. In 17 cases no medical treatment was sought until after the cancer had been present for over five years. It is concluded that these rare cancers, histologically indistinguishable from the ordinary basal cell carcinoma, are, from their onset, either biologically more aggressive or occur in patients with a lower tumor host resistance. Unfortunately apart from their bizarre biological behavior, we do not have any means of distinguishing them at their onset from the usual basal cell carcinoma.

TL;DR: Evaluation of various solvent systems for lipid extraction of wheat Triticum aestivum L. cv.
Abstract: Evaluation of various solvent systems for lipid extraction of wheat Triticum aestivum L. cv. Rideau seeds showed that boiling 2-propanol followed by the Bligh-Dyer procedure was the most efficient method, with respect to lipid yield and ability to inactivate lipolytic enzymes. Ten phospholipids were identified in dry seeds; the major components being phosphatidylcholine, lysophosphatidylcholine, N-acyl lysophosphatidyl-ethanolamine, N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine, and phosphatidylethanolamine. After growth for 1 week (2 C) or 31 hours (24 C), the proportions of phosphatidylethanolamine + lysophosphatidic acid and phosphatidic acid increased, lysophosphatidylcholine decreased, and the remaining phospholipids showed little change. At 5 weeks (2 C) or 72 hours (24 C), the seedlings showed 5-fold increases in the proportion of phosphatidic acid largely at the expense of phosphatidylcholine, small decreases in N-acyl lysophosphatidylethanolamine and N-acylphosphatidylethanolamine, and significant increases in lysophosphatidylcholine. The changes in phosphatidic acid and phosphatidylcholine are interpreted as being partially due to increasing phospholipase D activity during germination. In general, the phospholipid composition was similar in morphologically equivalent seedlings grown at 2 C or 24 C. The increased membrane content in seedlings grown at 2 C does not reflect any preferential synthesis of individual phospholipids.

TL;DR: In this article, it is shown that if the cumulative distribution function (or cdf) F is continuous, and F(x)=N−1 ΣuN(x-Xj) where (uN) is a sequence of cdf's converging weakly to the cdf of the unit mass at zero, then F almost surely converges uniformly to F.
Abstract: Throughout this note, (Xj) is a sequence of independent and identically distributed random variables, defined on a probability space (Ω, ℑ ρ) and having common distribution F. It is shown that if the cumulative distribution function (or cdf) F is continuous, and F(x)=N−1 ΣuN(x-Xj) where (uN) is a sequence of cdf's converging weakly to the cdf of the unit mass at zero, and F almost surely converges uniformly to F. This result implies that if F has a density f and fN is a typical nonparametric density estimator and FN(x) = ∫ fN(t)dt then, with probability one, FN converges uniformly to F. Soit (Xj) une suite independante de variables aleatoires de měme distribution et de repartition F. Soit F(x)=N−1 ΣuN(x-Xj), ou (uN) est une suite de fonctions de repartition qui converge faiblement vers la loi degeneree a l'origine.

TL;DR: The problem of minimizing the bit dimension of control memories in microprogrammed digital computers is considered and the set of maximum compatibility classes of microcommands whose number is usually small is started, and near-minimal irredundant solutions are obtained.
Abstract: The problem of minimizing the bit dimension of control memories in microprogrammed digital computers is considered in this paper. We start essentially with the same basic formulation as that of Grasselli and Montanari [2]. However, in order to minimize the computational requirements, we start directly with the set of maximum compatibility classes of microcommands whose number is usually small, and readily obtain near-minimal irredundant solutions. A minimal solution is then obtained from the irredundant solutions.

Abstract: Coefficients of passive earth pressure have been compared using the method of slices employed in slope stability work. The common problem of a vertical wall pushing into sand with a horizontal surface has been investigated. The computed values compare more favorably with experimental findings for dense sand than do previous theories. The method is simple and may be extended to problems involving sloping backfill and surcharge loading.

TL;DR: In newborn pups 4 1 2 hr to 55 days of age, a 2-3hr constant infusion of glucose does not produce a steady concentration of glucose in plasma as it does in grown dogs, but rather the plasma glucose concentration continues to rise.
Abstract: In newborn pups 4 1 2 hr to 55 days of age, a 2–3-hr constant infusion of glucose does not produce a steady concentration of glucose in plasma as it does in grown dogs, but rather the plasma glucose concentration continues to rise. During the simultaneous infusion of insulin and glucose, the plasma glucose level reaches a steady level only if the rate of infusion of insulin is about ten times as high as the estimated basal rate of insulin secretion. During a glucose infusion, the level of IRI increases in the plasma. The rate of overall glucose utilization also increases, but there is no sustained increase in the metabolic clearance rate of glucose, and the rate of hepatic glucose production is diminished to a much lesser degree than in adult dogs. Plasma FFA levels were decreased, but less consistently, and often to a lesser degree than in adults. These findings indicate relative insensitivity to insulin in pups as compared to adult dogs.

TL;DR: A method for estimating the effect of hydrogen-bonding on gas solubilities in polar solvents is presented in this article, which is based on ideal gas and solubility in water.
Abstract: A method for estimating the effect of hydrogen-bonding on gas solubilities in polar solvents is presented. H-bonding factors, which are based on ideal gas solubilities and solubilities in water, appear to be closely related to H-bonding factors in the simple alcohols. Similarly, H-bonding factors in solvents containing a carbonly group or dihydroxy groups were related to those in acetone. The relation between the various H-bonding factors can be used to estimate solubilities in these and other associated solvents.

TL;DR: It is felt that angiography and surgery early in the course of a complicated myocardial infarct should diminish the immediate risk of death from both pump failure and cardiac rupture.
Abstract: In the past 18 months 15 patients have undergone emergency aortocoronary bypass grafts using saphenous vein in the presence of acute myocardial infarction. Eight patients were in a state of cardiogenic shock, and seven patients were having severe cardiac arrhythmias, persistent hypotension, or signs of extending infarction. There were three operative deaths, all of which occurred in the cardiogenic shock group of patients. One patient died three months after operation of a cerebrovascular accident. There are 11 surviving patients. One patient presently has angina, and one patient shows signs of left heart failure. The remaining patients are well at the present time. We feel that angiography and surgery early in the course of a complicated myocardial infarct should diminish the immediate risk of death from both pump failure and cardiac rupture. Controlled prospective studies are required to elucidate the timing and indications for operation.

TL;DR: Though the total number of lipolytic bacteria was fairly constant throughout the winter, the relative abundance of the acinetobacters dropped from approximately 90% in November to less than 10% in March, and then increased, and the aeromonads and pseudomonads showed the opposite trend.
Abstract: Lipolytic bacteria were isolated from two stations on Brewery Creek, an arm of the Ottawa River, during the winter of 1971-72. Total counts were approximately sevenfold higher at the more polluted downstream station, whereas lipolytic counts were about 100-fold higher. At this station, significantly more lipolytic bacteria grew on plates incubated at 20 C than at 4 C, suggesting that the population was comprised of both mesophiles and psychrophiles. However, at the upstream station, approximately the same number were obtained at both temperatures. A total of 434 isolates, mainly from the downstream station, were tentatively classified. The major groups were Pseudomonas, Acinetobacter-Moraxella, and Aeromonas. Though the total number of lipolytic bacteria was fairly constant throughout the winter, the relative abundance of the acinetobacters dropped from approximately 90% in November to less than 10% in March, and then increased. The aeromonads and pseudomonads showed the opposite trend. Most of the bacteria, though isolated at 4 C, also grew at 30 C. Lipolysis, however, was generally strongest at 20 C or below.
