Abstract: A multidrug-resistant Salmonella enterica serotype [4,5,12:i:-] clone carried a class 1 integron harboring dfrA12 and aadA2 gene cassettes and bla(TEM-1), aac(3)-IV, cmlA1, and tetA genes located in large plasmids of about 140 kb (carrying spv) or 120 kb (lacking spv). Several segregants, lacking multidrug resistance, contained a plasmid smaller than the parental one and no longer hybridized with probes for the lost resistances. The genes mediating resistance to ampicillin, chloramphenicol, and tetracycline in the [4,5,12:i:-] clone are different from those found in the pentadrug-resistant serotype Typhimurium DT104 clone.

Abstract: Collagenase-2 (matrix metalloproteinase-8, MMP-8) is an MMP mainly produced by neutrophils and associated with many inflammatory conditions. We have previously described that MMP-8 plays a protective role in cancer through its ability to regulate the inflammatory response induced by carcinogens. Moreover, it has been reported that experimental manipulation of the expression levels of this enzyme alters the metastatic behavior of human breast cancer cells. In this work, we have used mutant mice deficient in MMP-8 and syngenic melanoma and lung carcinoma tumor cells lines overexpressing this enzyme to further explore the putative antimetastatic potential of MMP-8. We report herein that MMP-8 prevents metastasis formation through the modulation of tumor cell adhesion and invasion. Thus, tumor cells overexpressing MMP-8 have an increased adhesion to extracellular matrix proteins, whereas their invasive ability through Matrigel is substantially reduced when compared with control cells. Analysis of MMP-8 in breast cancer patients revealed that the expression of this metalloproteinase by breast tumors correlates with a lower incidence of lymph node metastasis and confers good prognosis to these patients. On this basis, we propose that MMP-8 is a tumor protective factor, which also has the ability to reduce the metastatic potential of malignant cells in both mice and human.

Abstract: The production of single- and multi-photon events has been studied in the reaction e+e- -> gamma (gamma) + invisible particles. The data collected with the DELPHI detector during the years 1999 and 2000 at centre-of-mass energies between 191 GeV and 209 GeV was combined with earlier data to search for phenomena beyond the Standard Model. The measured number of light neutrino families was consistent with three and the absence of an excess of events beyond that predicted by the Standard Model processes was used to set limits on new physics. Both model-independent searches and searches for new processes predicted by supersymmetric and extra-dimensional models have been made. Limits on new non-standard model interactions between neutrinos and electrons were also determined.

Abstract: Dimuon and dielectron mass spectra, obtained from data resulting from proton-proton collisions at 8 TeV and recorded by the CMS experiment, are used to search for both narrow resonances and broad deviations from standard model predictions. The data correspond to an integrated luminosity of 20.6 (19.7) fb^(−1) for the dimuon (dielectron) channel. No evidence for non-standard-model physics is observed and 95% confidence level limits are set on parameters from a number of new physics models. The narrow resonance analyses exclude a Sequential Standard Model Z'_(SSM) resonance lighter than 2.90 TeV, a superstring-inspired Z'_ψ lighter than 2.57 TeV, and Randall-Sundrum Kaluza-Klein gravitons with masses below 2.73, 2.35, and 1.27 TeV for couplings of 0.10, 0.05, and 0.01, respectively. A notable feature is that the limits have been calculated in a model-independent way to enable straightforward reinterpretation in any model predicting a resonance structure. The observed events are also interpreted within the framework of two non-resonant analyses: one based on a large extra dimensions model and one based on a quark and lepton compositeness model with a left-left isoscalar contact interaction. Lower limits are established on MS, the scale characterizing the onset of quantum gravity, which range from 4.9 to 3.3 TeV, where the number of additional spatial dimensions varies from 3 to 7. Similarly, lower limits on Λ, the energy scale parameter for the contact interaction, are found to be 12.0 (15.2) TeV for destructive (constructive) interference in the dimuon channel and 13.5 (18.3) TeV in the dielectron channel.
