TL;DR: This paper analyzed the influence of bank efficiency and political economy variables on bank market structure (market share and market concentration) using a panel data of 2,592 banks from 69 countries over the 1996-2002 period.
Abstract: This paper analyzes the influence of bank efficiency and political economy variables on bank market structure (market share and market concentration) using a panel data of 2,592 banks from 69 countries over the 1996-2002 period. Results indicate that the validity of the efficiency-structure hypothesis to explain bank market structure varies across countries depending on national political economy variables. In particular, higher entry requirements, more generous deposit insurance and higher extent of government bank ownership reduce the positive influence of bank efficiency on market share and market concentration. However, tighter restrictions on bank activities, better quality of the contracting environment, more market monitoring, and more market orientation and development of the financial system increase the positive influence of bank efficiency on market share and market concentration. JEL classification: G18, G21, G28. Keywords: banking structure, efficiency, regulations, supervision, institutions.

TL;DR: Generated at a cost of some 25 million CPU-hours spread across multiple high-performance-computing (HPC) platforms, FFP8 is used to validate and verify analysis algorithms and their implementations, and to remove biases from and quantify uncertainties in the results of analyses of the real data.
Abstract: We present the 8th full focal plane simulation set (FFP8), deployed in support of the Planck 2015 results. FFP8 consists of 10 fiducial mission realizations reduced to 18 144 maps, together with the most massive suite of Monte Carlo realizations of instrument noise and CMB ever generated, comprising 104 mission realizations reduced to about 106 maps. The resulting maps incorporate the dominant instrumental, scanning, and data analysis effects, and the remaining subdominant effects will be included in future updates. Generated at a cost of some 25 million CPU-hours spread across multiple high-performance-computing (HPC) platforms, FFP8 is used to validate and verify analysis algorithms and their implementations, and to remove biases from and quantify uncertainties in the results of analyses of the real data.

TL;DR: Multivariate analysis confirmed that in addition to regional lymph node status, EMS1 amplification is an independent predictor of death from the tumor, but not CCND1 amplification, predicts early recurrence and reduced survival in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck.
Abstract: The relationship between CCND1 and/or EMS1 amplification and disease outcome was studied in a prospective series of 104 head and neck squamous cell carcinomas treated by surgical resection. The CCND1 and EMS1 copy number in tumor samples was estimated by differential PCR. The presence or absence of amplification was analyzed in relation to clinicopathological variables, tumor recurrence, and patient survival. CCND1 amplification occurred in 32 cases (31%) and was associated with increased lymph node stage (P = 0.005) and advanced disease stage (P = 0.003). EMS1 amplification was identified in 21 cases (20%) and was related with advanced T stages (P = 0.001), increased lymph node stage (P = 0.02), advanced disease stage (P = 0.041), poor histological differentiation (P = 0.018), recurrent disease (P = 0.0004), and reduced disease-specific survival (P < 0.0001). Coamplification of both genes occurred in 11 cases (11.5%). Multivariate analysis confirmed that in addition to regional lymph node status, EMS1 amplification is an independent predictor of death from the tumor (P = 0.0027). CCND1 amplification was not prognostic. These data indicate that EMS1 amplification, but not CCND1 amplification, predicts early recurrence and reduced survival in squamous cell carcinoma of the head and neck. The prognostic significance previously attributed to CCND1 amplification may be attributable to its frequent coamplification with EMS1.
