TL;DR: The present review provides an up-to-date account of the findings and mechanisms involved in neuroprotection of melatonin in PD.
Abstract: manifested by defective motor function, a decline in cognitive function, and depression. Histologically, its features include the presence of Lewy bodies and cytoplasmic inclusions that are composed predominantly of fibrillar -synuclein (2). Most biochemical studies suggest that, directly or indirectly, reactive oxygen/nitrogen species (ROS/RNS) are important mediators in the pathogenesis of PD. Given the difficulties in studying the molecular events that precede the onset of PD in patients, several in vivo and in vitro models have been developed. These models are primarily based on free-radical-generating toxins with a specific target in the nigrostriatal system. Some of the dopaminergic neuronal loss in PD has been postulated to be via apoptosis, given the morphological characteristics exhibited by what appear to be dying cells in postmortem brains of parkinsonism patients. Furthermore, in vivo experimental models of PD strongly suggest a role for apoptosis in the pathology of this human disease. The initial original observations of PD patients reported that about 15% of PD patients had a family background of the disease. Since then, the role of genetic factors in PD has been the subject of intense research (3). To date, a few specific mutations have been identified to be responsible for rare familial forms of the disease: -synuclein, parkin, UCHL1, DJ-1, and PINK1 are genes found to be related to PD. As is the case in Alzheimer’s disease, these genetic defects seem to affect a common molecular pathway related to the ubiquitin–proteasome system (4) with the exception of PINK1, which is related to mitochondrial metabolism. Analysis of the products of these genes are beyond the scope of the present review and have been reviewed extensively elsewhere (3,4). Some (if not all) of these mutations are partially related to free-radical generation. Thus, in addition to its genetic basis, it is widely believed that oxidative stress and free radicals play a critical role in idiopathic PD etiology.

Abstract: Context. The first Gaia Data Release contains the Tycho-Gaia Astrometric Solution (TGAS). This is a subset of about 2 million stars for which, besides the position and photometry, the proper motion and parallax are calculated using Hipparcos and Tycho-2 positions in 1991.25 as prior information. Aims. We investigate the scientific potential and limitations of the TGAS component by means of the astrometric data for open clusters. Methods. Mean cluster parallax and proper motion values are derived taking into account the error correlations within the astrometric solutions for individual stars, an estimate of the internal velocity dispersion in the cluster, and, where relevant, the effects of the depth of the cluster along the line of sight. Internal consistency of the TGAS data is assessed. Results. Values given for standard uncertainties are still inaccurate and may lead to unrealistic unit-weight standard deviations of least squares solutions for cluster parameters. Reconstructed mean cluster parallax and proper motion values are generally in very good agreement with earlier Hipparcos-based determination, although the Gaia mean parallax for the Pleiades is a significant exception. We have no current explanation for that discrepancy. Most clusters are observed to extend to nearly 15 pc from the cluster centre, and it will be up to future Gaia releases to establish whether those potential cluster-member stars are still dynamically bound to the clusters. Conclusions. The Gaia DR1 provides the means to examine open clusters far beyond their more easily visible cores, and can provide membership assessments based on proper motions and parallaxes. A combined HR diagram shows the same features as observed before using the Hipparcos data, with clearly increased luminosities for older A and F dwarfs.

Abstract: Background and Objective: Patients with cortical malformations often have intractable seizures and are candidates for epilepsy surgery. Within an unselected series of patients with various forms of cortical malformation, nine patients with multilobar polymicrogyria had electrical status epilepticus during sleep (ESES) accompanied by infrequent focal motor seizures. Eight patients also had intractable atonic drop attack seizures. Because ESES usually is accompanied by a good long-term seizure prognosis, the objective of this study was to examine ESES outcome among patients with a structural lesion that is usually highly epileptogenic and has a low seizure remission trend. Methods: The nine patients had follow-up periods lasting 4 to 19 years. All underwent brain MRI, serial sleep EEG recordings, and cognitive testing during and after ESES. Results: ESES and drop attack seizures appeared between the ages of 2 and 5 years(mean, 4 years) and ceased between the ages of 5 and 12 years (mean, 8 years). At the last visit patients were 8 to 23 years of age (mean, 14.5 years) and were either seizure free or had very infrequent focal motor seizures during sleep. Three patients were free from antiepileptic drugs. In no patient was definite cognitive deterioration apparent after ESES in comparison with earlier evaluations. Conclusions: Age-related secondary bilateral synchrony underlying ESES may be facilitated in multilobar polymicrogyria. The good seizure outcome contrasts with that usually found in the presence of cortical malformations. For children with polymicrogyria and drop attack seizures, surgical treatment of the epilepsy should be considered cautiously, and sleep EEG recordings should be performed systematically.

Abstract: The performance of missing transverse energy reconstruction algorithms is presented using √s=8 TeV proton-proton (pp) data collected with the CMS detector. Events with anomalous missing transverse energy are studied, and the performance of algorithms used to identify and remove these events is presented. The scale and resolution for missing transverse energy, including the effects of multiple pp interactions (pileup), are measured using events with an identified Z boson or isolated photon, and are found to be well described by the simulation. Novel missing transverse energy reconstruction algorithms developed specifically to mitigate the effects of large numbers of pileup interactions on the missing transverse energy resolution are presented. These algorithms significantly reduce the dependence of the missing transverse energy resolution on pileup interactions. Finally, an algorithm that provides an estimate of the significance of the missing transverse energy is presented, which is used to estimate the compatibility of the reconstructed missing transverse energy with a zero nominal value.
