TL;DR: The presented research reveals that coherent 3D data and spectral information, as provided by the SfM workflow, promote opportunities to derive both structural and physiological attributes at the individual tree crown (ITC) as well as stand levels.
Abstract: The adoption of Structure from Motion photogrammetry (SfM) is transforming the acquisition of three-dimensional (3D) remote sensing (RS) data in forestry. SfM photogrammetry enables surveys with little cost and technical expertise. We present the theoretical principles and practical considerations of this technology and show opportunities that SfM photogrammetry offers for forest practitioners and researchers. Our examples of key research indicate the successful application of SfM photogrammetry in forestry, in an operational context and in research, delivering results that are comparable to LiDAR surveys. Reviewed studies have identified possibilities for the extraction of biophysical forest parameters from airborne and terrestrial SfM point clouds and derived 2D data in area-based approaches (ABA) and individual tree approaches. Additionally, increases in the spatial and spectral resolution of sensors available for SfM photogrammetry enable forest health assessment and monitoring. The presented research reveals that coherent 3D data and spectral information, as provided by the SfM workflow, promote opportunities to derive both structural and physiological attributes at the individual tree crown (ITC) as well as stand levels. We highlight the potential of using unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs) and consumer-grade cameras for terrestrial SfM-based surveys in forestry. Offering several spatial products from a single sensor, the SfM workflow enables foresters to collect their own fit-for-purpose RS data. With the broad availability of non-expert SfM software, we provide important practical considerations for the collection of quality input image data to enable successful photogrammetric surveys.

TL;DR: Overall, 17/36 cases showed at least 1 of the molecular alterations studied here, which makes the PI 3‐kinase‐initiated signaling pathway one of the most frequently altered in HNSCC.
Abstract: We investigated the status of the PI 3-kinase/AKT/PTEN signaling pathway in a series of 117 head and neck squamous cell carcinomas (HNSCC) in a search for molecular alterations in genes/proteins with potential prognostic value. For this purpose, PIK3CA and AKT2 gene amplification was assessed by multiplex and Quantitative Real-Time PCR. Protein expression of AKT, p-AKT, p110alpha and PTEN was determined by Western blot. PTEN allelic loss was evaluated by microsatellite analysis. PTEN-exon 5 was screened for point mutations by PCR-SSCP. Homozygous deletions were determined by multiplex PCR. PIK3CA gene was amplified in 43/117 (37%) fresh tumor samples, a frequency that did not differ from that found in archival premalignant tissues: 15/38 (39%); 12/40 (30%) fresh tumors harbored AKT2 gene amplification. AKT was found activated in 6/36 (17%) fresh tumor samples, when compared to their normal tissue counterparts. Of these 6 cases, 1 showed p110alpha overexpression and 5 displayed PTEN protein downregulation. Neither allelic loss (found in 11/77 informative cases) nor point mutations or homozygous deletions accounted for the reduced PTEN protein expression observed in our tumor series. The histologically normal mucosa of 4 patients displayed some of the molecular alterations analyzed. Dysregulation of the PI 3-K/AKT/PTEN pathway might contribute to early HNSCC tumorigenesis and might constitute a potential clinical target. Overall, 17/36 (47%) cases showed at least 1 of the molecular alterations studied here, which makes the PI 3-kinase-initiated signaling pathway one of the most frequently altered in HNSCC.

TL;DR: The meta-analysis of 10 European birth cohorts within the ESCAPE project found consistent evidence for a association between air pollution and pneumonia in early childhood, and some evidence for an association with otitis media.
Abstract: Background: Few studies have investigated traffic-related air pollution as a risk factor for respiratory infections during early childhood. Objectives: We aimed to investigate the association between air pollution and pneumonia, croup, and otitis media in 10 European birth cohorts—BAMSE (Sweden), GASPII (Italy), GINIplus and LISAplus (Germany), MAAS (United Kingdom), PIAMA (the Netherlands), and four INMA cohorts (Spain)—and to derive combined effect estimates using meta-analysis. Methods: Parent report of physician-diagnosed pneumonia, otitis media, and croup during early childhood were assessed in relation to annual average pollutant levels [nitrogen dioxide (NO2), nitrogen oxide (NOx), particulate matter ≤ 2.5 μm (PM2.5), PM2.5 absorbance, PM10, PM2.5–10 (coarse PM)], which were estimated using land use regression models and assigned to children based on their residential address at birth. Identical protocols were used to develop regression models for each study area as part of the ESCAPE project. Logistic regression was used to calculate adjusted effect estimates for each study, and random-effects meta-analysis was used to calculate combined estimates. Results: For pneumonia, combined adjusted odds ratios (ORs) were elevated and statistically significant for all pollutants except PM2.5 (e.g., OR = 1.30; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.65 per 10-μg/m3 increase in NO2 and OR = 1.76; 95% CI: 1.00, 3.09 per 10-μg/m3 PM10). For otitis media and croup, results were generally null across all analyses except for NO2 and otitis media (OR = 1.09; 95% CI: 1.02, 1.16 per 10-μg/m3). Conclusion: Our meta-analysis of 10 European birth cohorts within the ESCAPE project found consistent evidence for an association between air pollution and pneumonia in early childhood, and some evidence for an association with otitis media.

TL;DR: In this paper, a search for new particles whose decays produce two jets (dijets) using proton-antiproton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.13 fb-1 collected with the CDF II detector is presented.
Abstract: We present a search for new particles whose decays produce two jets (dijets) using proton-antiproton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 1.13 fb-1 collected with the CDF II detector. The measured dijet mass spectrum is found to be consistent with next-to-leading-order perturbative QCD predictions, and no significant evidence of new particles is found. We set upper limits at the 95% confidence level on cross sections times the branching fraction for the production of new particles decaying into dijets with both jets having a rapidity magnitude |y| < 1. These limits are used to determine the mass exclusions for the excited quark, axigluon, flavor-universal coloron, E6 diquark, color-octet technirho, W', and Z'.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors present an early analysis of the Taurus molecular complex, on line-of-sight-averaged data and without component separation, and derive maps of the dust temperature T, the dust spectral emissivity index β, and the dust optical depth at 250 μm τ250.
Abstract: Planck allows unbiased mapping of Galactic sub-millimetre and millimetre emission from the most diffuse regions to the densest parts of molecular clouds. We present an early analysis of the Taurus molecular complex, on line-of-sight-averaged data and without component separation. The emission spectrum measured by Planck and IRAS can be fitted pixel by pixel using a single modified blackbody. Some systematic residuals are detected at 353 GHz and 143 GHz, with amplitudes around −7% and +13%, respectively, indicating that the measured spectra are likely more complex than a simple modified blackbody. Significant positive residuals are also detected in the molecular regions and in the 217 GHz and 100 GHz bands, mainly caused by the contribution of the J = 2 → 1a ndJ = 1 → 0 12 CO and 13 CO emission lines. We derive maps of the dust temperature T , the dust spectral emissivity index β, and the dust optical depth at 250 μm τ250. The temperature map illustrates the cooling of the dust particles in thermal equilibrium with the incident radiation field, from 16−17 K in the diffuse regions to 13−14 K in the dense parts. The distribution of spectral indices is centred at 1.78, with a standard deviation of 0.08 and a systematic error of 0.07. We detect a significant T − β anti-correlation. The dust optical depth map reveals the spatial distribution of the column density of the molecular complex from the densest molecular regions to the faint diffuse regions. We use near-infrared extinction and H i data at 21-cm to perform a quantitative analysis of the spatial variations of the measured dust optical depth at 250 μm per hydrogen atom τ250/NH. We report an increase of τ250/NH by a factor of about 2 between the atomic phase and the molecular phase, which has a strong impact on the equilibrium temperature of the dust particles.
