Abstract: In the present work the authors report the result of their food ethnobotanical researches, which have been carried out in Sicily during the last thirty years. Data concerning 188 wild species used in the traditional Sicilian cuisine are reported. The authors underline those species that are partially or completely unknown for their culinary use and they illustrate other species that local inhabitants suggested in the prevention or treatment of symptomatologies caused by a refined diet, poor in vegetables. These data want to contribute to avoid the loss of traditional knowledge on uses and recipes concerning wild food botanicals, and to encourage further studies for those species that have not yet been sufficiently researched in their food chemical and nutritional profile. These studies may also suggest new applications for a few botanicals in medico-nutritional fields. The work includes also a short review of the seaweeds and mushrooms traditionally gathered and consumed in Sicily.

Abstract: The shedding of membrane vesicles from the cell surface is a vital process considered to be involved in cell-cell and cell-matrix interactions and in tumor progression. By immunoelectron microscopic analysis of surface replicas of 8701-BC human breast carcinoma cells, we observed that membrane vesicles shed from plasma membranes contained densely clustered gelatinase B [matrix metalloproteinase 9 (MMP-9)], β1 integrins, and human lymphocyte antigen class I molecules. By contrast, α-folate receptor was uniformly distributed on the smooth cell membrane and shedding areas. Both cell surface clustering of selected molecules and membrane vesicle release were evident only when cells were cultured in the presence of serum. Vesicle shedding occurred preferentially at the edge or along narrow protrusions of the cell. Specific accumulation of proMMP-9 and active forms of MMP-9 in shed vesicles was also demonstrated by gelatin zymography. In addition, Western blotting analysis showed the presence of a large amount of proMMP-9/tissue inhibitor of metalloproteinase 1 complex. The release of selected areas of plasma membranes enriched with MMP-9 and β1 integrins indicates that membrane vesicle shedding from tumor cells plays an important role in the directional proteolysis of the extracellular matrix during cellular migration. The presence of human lymphocyte antigen class I antigens suggests a mechanism for tumor cells to escape from immune surveillance.

Abstract: The influence of Fe3+, Fe2+ and Ag+ on phenol photodegradation performed in aqueous polycrystalline TiO2 (anatase) and TiO2 (rutile) dispersions was investigated. These ions can react very easily with peroxo species produced on the catalyst surface and/or in the solution. Experimental conditions for the continuous photoproduction of Fenton reactive can be achieved in this way. Maximum photoactivity was observed for TiO2 (anatase) in the presence of oxygen and [Fe3+] = 5 × 10−4 M. The behaviour of Fe2+ was similar to Fe3+ for the same experimental conditions. Anatase photoactivity was beneficially influenced in the presence of oxygen and [Ag+] = 1 × 10−4 M.

Abstract: Long-duration gamma-ray bursts (GRBs) are thought to be produced by the core-collapse of a rapidly rotating massive star. This event generates a highly relativistic jet and prompt gamma-ray and X-ray emission arises from internal shocks in the jet or magnetized outflows. If the stellar core does not immediately collapse to a black hole, it may form an unstable, highly magnetized millisecond pulsar or magnetar. As it spins down, the magnetar would inject energy into the jet causing a distinctive bump in the GRB light curve where the emission becomes fairly constant followed by a steep decay when the magnetar collapses. We assume that the collapse of a massive star to a magnetar can launch the initial jet. By automatically fitting the X-ray light curves of all GRBs observed by the Swift satellite, we identified a subset of bursts which have a feature in their light curves which we call an internal plateau – unusually constant emission followed by a steep decay – which may be powered by a magnetar. We use the duration and luminosity of this internal plateau to place limits on the magnetar spin period and magnetic field strength, and find that they are consistent with the most extreme predicted values for magnetars.
