TL;DR: Hypovitaminosis D is associated with worsening of the ability to perform activities of daily living and higher hip fracture prevalence, and this finding should lead to an urgent population-based strategy to remedy this condition.
Abstract: In order to evaluate the prevalence, risk factors, and clinical consequences of hypovitaminosis D in elderly Italian women a multicenter study of 43 osteoporosis centers from all regions of Italy was carried out. Study population included 700 women aged 60-80 years in whom blood was taken for 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25OHD) and parathyroid hormone (PTH) measurements. All subjects were also questioned to assess the prevalence of several risk factors for hypovitaminosis D, osteoporotic fractures and activities of daily living (ADL). Values of 25OHD lower than 5 ng/ml were found in 27% of the women and lower than 12 ng/ml in 76%. 25OHD and PTH levels were negatively correlated ( r=-0.38, after logarithmic transformation of both variables). 25OHD levels significantly declined with advancing age and number of pregnancies and were positively correlated with educational level (years spent at school), dairy calcium intake, and days spent on holiday by the sea. In a multivariate model including all these variables, the only one that remained significant was the level of education. The lowest age-adjusted 25OH D levels were found in smokers or in women living in central Italy as compared with those living in northern or southern Italy. The mean (+/-SD) age-adjusted 25OH D values were significantly lower in women who sustained a hip fracture (7.1+/-2.2 versus 11.0+/-9.9). Women with low 25OHD levels (<12 ng/ml) had worse scores for ADL and mobility ADL (move outdoors, use stairs, walk at least 400 m, carry a heavy object). Vitamin D deficiency is extremely common among elderly Italian women. Women with lower educational level, living in central Italy, smokers or with lower intake of dairy products are at greater risk. Hypovitaminosis D is associated with worsening of the ability to perform activities of daily living and higher hip fracture prevalence. This finding should lead to an urgent population-based strategy to remedy this condition.

TL;DR: The female predilection and clinical observations of LH growth under conditions of estrogenic exposure suggest a possible role for estrogen in the pathogenesis of LHs, and the relationship between sex hormones and liver tumors is investigated.
Abstract: The liver is morphologically and functionally modulated by sex hormones. Long-term use of oral contraceptives (OCs) and anabolic androgenic steroids (AASs) can induce both benign (hemangioma, adenoma, and focal nodular hyperplasia [FNH]) and malignant (hepatocellular carcinoma [HCC]) hepatocellular tumors. Hepatic adenomas (HAs) are rare, benign neoplasms usually occurring in young women, the development and the complications of which have been related to the strength of OCs and the duration of their use. HA incidence has fallen since the introduction of pills containing smaller amounts of estrogens. FNH is a benign lesion, most commonly seen in young women, which is thought to represent a local hyperplastic response of hepatocytes to a vascular abnormality. Because of the female predominance and the young age at onset, a role of female hormones has been suggested. Furthermore, a large proportion of women with FNH (50-75%) are OC users. Liver hemangiomas (LHs) are the most common benign liver tumors and are seen more commonly in young adult females. The female predilection and clinical observations of LH growth under conditions of estrogenic exposure suggest a possible role for estrogen in the pathogenesis of LHs. HCC has become one of the most widespread tumors in the world in recent years, representing the sixth leading cancer and the third most common cause of death from cancer. Apart from liver cirrhosis, numerous other factors responsible for its onset have been proposed: hepatitis infections from virus B (HBV) and C (HCV), alcohol, smoking, and aflatoxin. However, regardless of etiology, chronic liver diseases progress at unequal rates in the two sexes, with the major sequelae, such as cirrhosis and HCC, being more frequent in men than in women. These epidemiological data have prompted researchers to investigate the relationship between sex hormones and liver tumors. The human liver expresses estrogen and androgen receptors and experimentally both androgens and estrogens have been implicated in stimulating hepatocyte proliferation and may act as liver tumor inducers or promoters.

TL;DR: In this article, a general overview on heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation mechanisms in the presence of TiO 2, with a special focus on conversion of aliphatic and aromatic organic species, is provided.
Abstract: This review provides the reader with a general overview on heterogeneous photocatalytic oxidation mechanisms in the presence of TiO 2 , with a special address to conversion of aliphatic and aromatic organic species. The aim was to clarify the steps of the photo-oxidation of the various classes of compounds and to relate them with the properties of the catalysts and the experimental conditions used. Reactions carried out to perform complete degradation and photocatalytic partial oxidations have been deeply discussed. Recent isotopic studies highlighted new reaction pathways concerning partial oxidation of alcohols to aldehyde and oxidation of benzene while EPR investigations confirmed that not only the photogenerated hole but also the OH radicals are involved in the oxidation of the substrates.
