TL;DR: In this paper, photometric properties and distance measurements of 252 high redshift Type Ia supernovae (0.15 < z < 1.1) were presented and their multi-colour light curves measured using the MegaPrime/MegaCam instrument at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT).
Abstract: Aims. We present photometric properties and distance measurements of 252 high redshift Type Ia supernovae (0.15 < z < 1.1)
discovered during the first three years of the Supernova Legacy Survey (SNLS). These events were detected and their multi-colour
light curves measured using the MegaPrime/MegaCam instrument at the Canada-France-Hawaii Telescope (CFHT), by repeatedly
imaging four one-square degree fields in four bands. Follow-up spectroscopy was performed at the VLT, Gemini and Keck telescopes
to confirm the nature of the supernovae and to measure their redshifts.
Methods. Systematic uncertainties arising from light curve modeling are studied, making use of two techniques to derive the peak
magnitude, shape and colour of the supernovae, and taking advantage of a precise calibration of the SNLS fields.
Results. A flat ΛCDM cosmological fit to 231 SNLS high redshift type Ia supernovae alone gives Ω_M = 0.211 ± 0.034(stat) ±
0.069(sys). The dominant systematic uncertainty comes from uncertainties in the photometric calibration. Systematic uncertainties
from light curve fitters come next with a total contribution of ± 0.026 on Ω_M. No clear evidence is found for a possible evolution of
the slope (β) of the colour-luminosity relation with redshift.

TL;DR: The Michelson Interferometer for Pas- sive Atmospheric Sounding (MIPAS) is a mid-infrared emission spectrometer which is part of the core payload of ENVISAT as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: MIPAS, the Michelson Interferometer for Pas- sive Atmospheric Sounding, is a mid-infrared emission spectrometer which is part of the core payload of ENVISAT. It is a limb sounder, i.e. it scans across the horizon detecting atmospheric spectral radiances which are inverted to verti- cal temperature, trace species and cloud distributions. These data can be used for scientific investigations in various re- search fields including dynamics and chemistry in the alti- tude region between upper troposphere and lower thermo- sphere. The instrument is a well calibrated and characterized Fourier transform spectrometer which is able to detect many trace constituents simultaneously. The different concepts of retrieval methods are described including multi-target and two-dimensional retrievals. Operationally generated data sets consist of temperature, H2O, O3, CH4, N2O, HNO3, and NO2 profiles. Measurement errors are investigated in de- tail and random and systematic errors are specified. The re- sults are validated by independent instrumentation which has been operated at ground stations or aboard balloon gondolas and aircraft. Intercomparisons of MIPAS measurements with other satellite data have been carried out, too. As a result, it

TL;DR: It is shown that this method provides a natural generalization of the classical box-counting techniques to fractal functions (the wavelets actually play the role of “generalized boxes”).
Abstract: The multifractal formalism originally introduced for singular measures is revisited using the wavelet transform. This new approach is based on the definition of partition functions from the wavelet transform modulus maxima. We demonstrate that the f(α) singularity spectrum can be readily determined from the scaling behavior of these partition functions. We show that this method provides a natural generalization of the classical box-counting techniques to fractal functions (the wavelets actually play the role of “generalized boxes”). We report on a systematic comparison between this alternative method and the structure function approach which is commonly used in the context of fully developed turbulence. We comment on the intrinsic limitations of the structure functions which possess fundamental drawbacks and do not provide a full characterization of the singularities of a signal in many cases. We show that our method based on the wavelet transform modulus maxima decomposition works in most situations and ...

TL;DR: International experts met to discuss recent advances and to revise the 2004 recommendations for assessing and reporting precursor lesions to invasive carcinomas of the pancreas, including pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN), intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasms (IPMN), mucinous cystic neoplasm, and other lesions.
Abstract: International experts met to discuss recent advances and to revise the 2004 recommendations for assessing and reporting precursor lesions to invasive carcinomas of the pancreas, including pancreatic intraepithelial neoplasia (PanIN), intraductal papillary mucinous neoplasm (IPMN), mucinous cystic neoplasm, and other lesions. Consensus recommendations include the following: (1) To improve concordance and to align with practical consequences, a 2-tiered system (low vs. high grade) is proposed for all precursor lesions, with the provision that the current PanIN-2 and neoplasms with intermediate-grade dysplasia now be categorized as low grade. Thus, "high-grade dysplasia" is to be reserved for only the uppermost end of the spectrum ("carcinoma in situ"-type lesions). (2) Current data indicate that PanIN of any grade at a margin of a resected pancreas with invasive carcinoma does not have prognostic implications; the clinical significance of dysplasia at a margin in a resected pancreas with IPMN lacking invasive carcinoma remains to be determined. (3) Intraductal lesions 0.5 to 1 cm can be either large PanINs or small IPMNs. The term "incipient IPMN" should be reserved for lesions in this size with intestinal or oncocytic papillae or GNAS mutations. (4) Measurement of the distance between an IPMN and invasive carcinoma and sampling of intervening tissue are recommended to assess concomitant versus associated status. Conceptually, concomitant invasive carcinoma (in contrast with the "associated" group) ought to be genetically distinct from an IPMN elsewhere in the gland. (5) "Intraductal spread of invasive carcinoma" (aka, "colonization") is recommended to describe lesions of invasive carcinoma invading back into and extending along the ductal system, which may morphologically mimic high-grade PanIN or even IPMN. (6) "Simple mucinous cyst" is recommended to describe cysts >1 cm having gastric-type flat mucinous lining at most minimal atypia without ovarian-type stroma to distinguish them from IPMN. (7) Human lesions resembling the acinar to ductal metaplasia and atypical flat lesions of genetically engineered mouse models exist and may reflect an alternate pathway of carcinogenesis; however, their biological significance requires further study. These revised recommendations are expected to improve our management and understanding of precursor lesions in the pancreas.
