TL;DR: The results of this study suggest that the addition of ZOL increases overall survival in lung cancer patients with bone metastases and the longer period of receiving ZOL, the better effect on survival and time to progression.
Abstract: Bone metastases occur in 20-40% of patients with lung cancer. Recent studies demonstrate a direct antiproliferative effect of 3rd generation bisphosphonates (BPs) on lung tumors, which may influence the survival. Therefore, we examined the clinical impact of zoledronic acid (ZOL; Zometa), a 3rd generation BP, with a focus on the survival, time to progression and pain effect in lung cancer patients with bone metastases. Lung cancer patients (n = 144, Stage IV) with evidence of metastasis bone scan were included. Eighty-seven of 144 experienced bone pain and received ZOL, 4 mg i.v. every 21 days (Group A), whereas the other 57 patients received no ZOL (Group B). All patients were treated with a combination chemotherapy consisted of docetaxel 100 mg/m(2) and carboplatin AUC = 6. It was found that Group A had a statistically significant longer survival (p 0.05). Urine N-telopeptide of type I collagen (NTx) levels decreased in patients with NTx < or = 29 nM BCE/mM creatinine at baseline after treatment with ZOL. The results of our study suggest that the addition of ZOL increases overall survival in lung cancer patients with bone metastases. The longer period of receiving ZOL, the better effect on survival and time to progression.

TL;DR: In this paper, a general flexibility matrix is developed which expresses the local flexibility of a beam of rectangular cross section with a single edge crack, and the dominant term in this matrix is used to study the stability of the cracked column to follower and vertical loads.

TL;DR: The Hořava theory for the completion of General Relativity at UV scales can be interpreted as a gauge fixed Tensor-Vector theory, and it can be extended to an invariant theory under the full group of four-dimensional diffeomorphisms as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: We show that the Hořava theory for the completion of General Relativity at UV scales can be interpreted as a gauge fixed Tensor-Vector theory, and it can be extended to an invariant theory under the full group of four-dimensional diffeomorphisms. In this respect, although being fully relativistic, it results to be locally anisotropic in the time-like and space-like directions defined by a family of irrotational observers. We show that this theory propagates generically three degrees of freedom: two of them are related to the four-dimensional diffeomorphism invariant graviton (the metric) and one is related to a propagating scalar mode of the vector. Finally, we note that in the present formulation, matter can be consistently coupled to gravity.

TL;DR: A detailed performance analysis for the most important diversity receivers operating over a composite fading channel modeled by the generalized-K (Kg) distribution is presented and the average bit error probability is studied.
Abstract: A detailed performance analysis for the most important diversity receivers operating over a composite fading channel modeled by the generalized-K (Kg) distribution is presented. The Kg distribution has been recently considered as a generic and versatile distribution for the accurate modeling of a great variety of short term fading in conjunction with long term fading (shadowing) channel conditions. For this relatively new composite fading model, expressions for important statistical metrics of maximal ratio combining (MRC), equal gain combining (EGC), selection combining (SC) and switch and stay combining (SSC) diversity receivers are derived. Using these expressions and by considering independent but not necessarily identical distributed fading channel conditions, performance criteria, such as average output signal-to-noise ratio, amount of fading and outage probability are obtained in closed form. Moreover, following the moments generating function (MGF) based approach for MRC and SSC receivers, and the Pade approximants method for SC and EGC receivers, the average bit error probability is studied. The proposed mathematical analysis is complemented by various performance evaluation results which demonstrate the accuracy of the theoretical approach.

TL;DR: Quantifying the heterogeneity of parametric maps that reflect lesion washout properties could contribute to the computer-aided diagnosis of breast lesions in DCE-MRI.
Abstract: The current study investigates the feasibility of using texture analysis to quantify the heterogeneity of lesion enhancement kinetics in order to discriminate malignant from benign breast lesions. A total of 82 biopsy-proven breast lesions (51 malignant, 31 benign), originating from 74 women subjected to dynamic contrast-enhanced magnetic resonance imaging (DCE-MRI) were analysed. Pixel-wise analysis of DCE-MRI lesion data was performed to generate initial enhancement, post-initial enhancement and signal enhancement ratio (SER) parametric maps; these maps were subsequently subjected to co-occurrence matrix texture analysis. The discriminating ability of texture features extracted from each parametric map was investigated using a least-squares minimum distance classifier and further compared with the discriminating ability of the same texture features extracted from the first post-contrast frame. Selected texture features extracted from the SER map achieved an area under receiver operating characteristic curve of 0.922 ± 0.029, a performance similar to post-initial enhancement map features (0.906 ± 0.032) and statistically significantly higher than for initial enhancement map (0.767 ± 0.053) and first post-contrast frame (0.756 ± 0.060) features. Quantifying the heterogeneity of parametric maps that reflect lesion washout properties could contribute to the computer-aided diagnosis of breast lesions in DCE-MRI.
