TL;DR: Correlation of the presence of serum antigen with clinical status indicated that the Gib 13 target antigen in serum is probably an indicator of either active or early infection, or of both.
Abstract: A monoclonal antibody designated Gib 13-5-2 (Gib 13) and directed against the cattle parasite Onchocerca gibsoni was used in a two-site immunoradiometric assay (IRMA) for detection of circulating antigen in the sera of Wuchereria bancrofti-infected individuals from Sri Lanka and Papua New Guinea. The microfilaremic patients were, in general, serum antigen positive by the Gib 13 IRMA. Among the amicrofilaremic patients, 47% of those with lymphedema, lymphangitis, hydrocele, etc., and 25% of those with elephantiasis had circulating antigen. Correlation of the presence of serum antigen with clinical status indicated that the Gib 13 target antigen in serum is probably an indicator of either active or early infection, or of both. The antigen was also detected in the urine of some patients. By sodium dodecyl sulphate polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis immunoblotting, Gib 13 target antigens of molecular weights 67,000 and 52,000 were identified.

TL;DR: Although there was a tendency for more women to be edentulous, a significantly higher proportion of women than men had a full complement of teeth, and the age specific tooth mortality for the Sri Lanka group was consistently less than for people in several Western countries.
Abstract: The tooth mortality of 787 Sri Lanka tea plantation workers and residents aged between 15 and 85 yr was studied in terms of missing teeth as well as teeth requiring extraction for various reasons The mean number of missing teeth per person was 67 +/- 90 A pattern relating actual tooth loss and tooth loss adjusted to take account of teeth needing extraction was observed Such adjustment increased the mean number of missing teeth per person by about two teeth in most age groups The age specific pattern of tooth loss was calculated There was an abrupt increase in tooth mortality at the ages 45-54 The age specific tooth mortality for the Sri Lankan group was consistently less than for people in several Western countries These trends were also apparent in the mortality pattern of individual tooth types Although there was a tendency for more women to be edentulous, a significantly higher proportion of women than men had a full complement of teeth

TL;DR: Seven species of mosquitoes oviposited in open and bored bamboo traps at a site in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, the most prevalent being Aedes albopictus, Aedes novalbopicus and Armigeres subalbatus, showing that these three species preferred to lay in open than in bored traps.
Abstract: Seven species of mosquitoes oviposited in open and bored bamboo traps at a site in Peradeniya, Sri Lanka, the most prevalent being Aedes albopictus, Aedes novalbopictus and Armigeres subalbatus. These three species preferred to lay in open than in bored traps. Aedes albopictus and Ar. subalbatus preferred to lay at ground level but Ae. novalbopictus showed no preference between ground level, 3.5 and 7.0 m height. A comparison of two collection series, one with traps in fixed positions and the other with traps interchanged randomly with respect to the positions, showed that individual trap attractiveness is a factor that can have a marked influence on the overall oviposition trends in Ae. albopictus and Ar. subalbatus. A study of oviposition with respect to height above the water level showed that in Ae. albopictus and Ar. subalbatus, more than 75% of the eggs were laid within about 16 mm of the waterline. However, there was a markedly greater dispersion of eggs in Ae. albopictus, indicating more vertical movement during oviposition in this species than in Ar. subalbatus.

TL;DR: A study of the abundance of Be in the gem sediments of Sri Lanka shows that Be is found in the range of 1 -13 ppm as mentioned in this paper, which is an irregular distribution among sediments.
Abstract: A study of the abundance of Be in the gem sediments of Sri Lanka shows that Be is found in the range of 1–13 ppm. Be shows an irregular distribution among sediments. It occurs in the silicate form and due to the proximity to the beryllium bearing rocks, namely granites and pegmatites of the Highland and Southwest Groups of Sri Lanka, very little decomposition of the Be-bearing minerals had taken place. This is further aided by the high resistance to weathering of the beryllium minerals, particularly beryl and chrysoberyl.

TL;DR: A group of students who failed to obtain university admission on their relatively poor GCE (advanced level) examination performance was used for a preliminary study and revealed that several students were of high general intellectual ability.
Abstract: Students are admitted to university in Sri Lanka on the basis of aggregate marks above a certain cut-off point obtained at the GCE (advanced level) examination. On this criterion and on a district-quota basis operative for the whole island, high performers are admitted to the medical faculties. Those with lower aggregate marks are admitted to the other life science faculties. High performance at the GCE (advanced level) examination is considered to reflect high general intellectual ability and vice versa. A group of students who failed to obtain university admission on their relatively poor GCE (advanced level) examination performance was used for a preliminary study. This study revealed that several students were of high general intellectual ability. A similar study carried out on groups of new entrants to the life science courses at the University of Peradeniya (which included medical students) showed that the groups did not differ significantly in general intellectual ability from the non-University group. Students of high general intellectual ability were found distributed evenly in all the groups studied.

TL;DR: The ratio of mannuronic acid residues to guluronic Acid residues (M/G ratio) of sodium alginate extracted from Cystoseira trinodis, Turbinaria conoidcs and Sargassum sp.
Abstract: The ratio of mannuronic acid residues to guluronic acid residues (M/G ratio) of sodium alginate extracted from Cystoseira trinodis, Turbinaria conoidcs and Sargassum sp. was determined using high resolution 1 H-NMR spectroscopy. The intensities of the signals due to H-5 of guluronate residues and H-1 of both guluronate and mannuronate residues were used. The alginate samples were found to be rich in guluronate residues, and the polymer chains are likely to be composed of long blocks of guluronate residues, short blocks of mannuronate residues and a small proportion of blocks containing both uronide residues.

TL;DR: All solanaceous crops cultivated in Sri Lanka except chilli cv.
Abstract: All solanaceous crops cultivated in Sri Lanka except chilli cv. Ml 1 were found to be susceptible to biotype 3 of Pseudomonas solanacearum. Bacterium was also proven pathogenic to some of the improved cultivars of AVRDC tomato seleo tions. Organic manure (chicken manure, cowdung, and Gliricidia leaves) when incorporated into inoculated soil significant increase in number of propagules of P. solanacenrum and severity of wilt disease in subsequent tomato cv. marglobe were observed in contrast to chemical treatments (lime, acetic acid, Benomyl and Gaptan). Significant reduction of bacterial population and disease severity was seen in Captan and Benomyl treated soil only. Organic manure treatments stimulated growth of both P. solanacearum and other saprophytic bacteria. The ratio of P. solanacearum to other bacteria showed a d~rect relationship to percentage wilt in a subsequent tomato crop.

TL;DR: Detailed measurements within experimental plots of two improved varieties Panniyur 1 and Kuching indicated that leaf size, the number of flowers per spike and berry weight were reduced on infected vines.
Abstract: In recent years Black pepper (Piper nigrum) in Sri Lanka has become affected with‘Little leaf’disease. The main symptoms are chlorosis of leaves, shortening of internodes, proliferation of branches, greening and enlargement of floral bracts. Detailed measurements within experimental plots of two improved varieties Panniyur 1 and Kuching, indicated that leaf size, the number of flowers per spike and berry weight were reduced on infected vines. Seeds from infected vines germinated less well than those from healthy vines. In a field trial, disease spread was similar in plots planted with pepper at different spacings and receiving different fertilizer treatments.
