Abstract: Actuators based on conducting polymers are attracting increasing interest due to their desirable features such as large mechanical stress generated, sufficient maximum strain values, high reversibility, good safety properties and the possibility of precise control using small voltages. Many attempts have been made to improve the actuator performance. We report electromechanical measurements on actuators of bilayer and trilayer free standing films prepared with polypyrrole (PPy) and poly(3,4-ethylenedioxythiophene) (PEDOT) conducting polymers. Both types of conducting polymer are pre-doped during synthesis with dodecyl benzenesulfonate (DBS). These multilayer films were prepared electrochemically so that the PEDOT layer is very thin compared to that of the PPy layer. In the trilayer film, the PEDOT layer is sandwiched between two PPy layers. The films were characterized electromechanically and the results compared with those of PPy single layer film. Bilayer films show a significant increase in the strain measured at higher scan rates (>100 mV s −1 ). The force difference generated between the reduced and oxidized states is much higher for trilayer films and higher for bilayer films than that in a single layer of PPy. Trilayer films are both stronger and faster than a single layer PPy film of half the thickness.

Abstract: This paper explores the concept of homegardens and their potential functions as strategic elements in land-use planning, and adaptation and mitigation to climate change in Sri Lanka. The ancient and locally adapted agroforestry system of homegardens is presently estimated to occupy nearly 15 % of the land area in Sri Lanka and is described in the scientific literature to offer several ecosystem services to its users; such as climate regulation, protection against natural hazards, enhanced land productivity and biological diversity, increased crop diversity and food security for rural poor and hence reduced vulnerability to climate change. Our results, based on a limited sample size, indicate that the homegardens also store significant amount of carbon, with above ground biomass carbon stocks in dry zone homegardens (n = 8) ranging from 10 to 55 megagrams of carbon per hectare (Mg C ha−1) with a mean value of 35 Mg C ha−1, whereas carbon stocks in wet zone homegardens (n = 4) range from 48 to 145 Mg C ha−1 with a mean value of 87 Mg C ha−1. This implies that homegardens may contain a significant fraction of the total above ground biomass carbon stock in the terrestrial system in Sri Lanka, and from our estimates its share has increased from almost one-sixth in 1992 to nearly one-fifth in 2010. In the light of current discussions on reducing emissions from deforestation and forest degradation (REDD+), the concept of homegardens in Sri Lanka provides interesting aspects to the debate and future research in terms of forest definitions, setting reference levels, and general sustainability.

Abstract: Based on sethnomedicine, Murraya koenigii. (L.) Spreng. is used as a stimulant, antidysentery, and for the management of diabetes mellitus. Twelve carbazole alkaloids were isolated from the stem, seed, and leaf of the plant growing in Nigeria and Sri Lanka. The methanol extracts were devoid of hypoglycemic activity, and some isolates decreased insulin secretion when they were subjected to both in vivo. and in vitro. (insulin secretion from INS-1 cells) antidiabetic tests. The cytotoxicity of the leaf and stem methanol extracts determined by the brine shrimp lethality bioassay were LC50 61.5 and 14.5 µg/ml, respectively. These extracts caused CNS depression in albino mice at the dose levels of 25–400 mg/kg. Also, they had an IC50 of 34.0 and 35.0 µg/ml at 24 h, respectively, against trichomonas. These results confirmed the use of the plant as an antidysentery caused by trichomonas but refute the antidiabetic and stimulant ethnomedical claims for the plant. Abstract: Human beta defensin 2 (hBD-2) is a major antimicrobial peptide that is produced by many types of epithelial cells, and is transcriptionally inducible by various proinflammatory agents, such as cytokines and bacteria. Although in vitro studies of the hBDs in oral epithelial cells have been well documented, only little is known about the in vivo pathological state of oral epithelium. We investigated the localization of hBD-2 peptide in tissue sections of oral lichen planus, leukoplakia, candidal leukoplakia and radicular cysts using immunohistochemistry. HBD-2 was stained in both the hyperkeratinized and the granular layers in cases of lichen planus with hyperkeratosis and leukoplakia. Expression in spinous and suprabasal layers was often strong in lichen planus. There were no significant differences in the number of S-100 positive dendritic cells between the widely stained areas and those with limited staining areas in lichen planus. In cases of candidal leukoplakia, the hyphae of candida were mainly detected on the surface of keratinization, which showed only negative or faint staining for hBD-2. These results suggest that hBD-2 is vigorously induced by lichen planus-related inflammation and that it plays an important role in protection from Candida albicans infection; however, it is not a strong chemotactic attractant for Langerhans cells in pathological conditions of oral epithelium.
