Abstract: During the past five years, a growing number of serine-threonine kinases highly homologous to the Saccharomyces cerevisiae Ipl1p kinase have been isolated in various organisms. A Drosophila melanogaster homologue, aurora, was the first to be isolated from a multicellular organism. Since then, several related kinases have been found in mammalian cells. They localise to the mitotic apparatus: in the centrosome, at the poles of the bipolar spindle or in the midbody. The kinases are necessary for completion of mitotic events such as centrosome separation, bipolar spindle assembly and chromosome segregation. Extensive research is now focusing on these proteins because the three human homologues are overexpressed in various primary cancers. Furthermore, overexpression of one of these kinases transforms cells. Because of the myriad of kinases identified, we suggest a generic name: Aurora/Ipl1p-related kinase (AIRK). We denote AIRKs with a species prefix and a number, e.g. HsAIRK1.

Abstract: In Briand and Hu (Probab Theory Relat Fields 136(4):604–618, 2006), the authors proved an existence result for BSDEs with quadratic generators with respect to the variable z and with unbounded terminal conditions. However, no uniqueness result was stated in that work. The main goal of this paper is to fill this gap. In order to obtain a comparison theorem for this kind of BSDEs, we assume that the generator is convex with respect to the variable z. Under this assumption of convexity, we are also able to prove a stability result in the spirit of the a priori estimates stated in Karoui et al. (Math Finance 7(1):1–71, 1997). With these tools in hands, we can derive the nonlinear Feynman–Kac formula in this context.

Abstract: Managing agricultural landscapes to support biodiversity and ecosystem services is a key aim of a sustainable agriculture. However, how the spatial arrangement of crop fields and other habitats in landscapes impacts arthropods and their functions is poorly known. Synthesising data from 49 studies (1515 landscapes) across Europe, we examined effects of landscape composition (% habitats) and configuration (edge density) on arthropods in fields and their margins, pest control, pollination and yields. Configuration effects interacted with the proportions of crop and non-crop habitats, and species’ dietary, dispersal and overwintering traits led to contrasting responses to landscape variables. Overall, however, in landscapes with high edge density, 70% of pollinator and 44% of natural enemy species reached highest abundances and pollination and pest control improved 1.7- and 1.4-fold respectively. Arable-dominated landscapes with high edge densities achieved high yields. This suggests that enhancing edge density in European agroecosystems can promote functional biodiversity and yield-enhancing ecosystem services.

Abstract: This paper presents a complete description of Virgo, the French-Italian gravitational wave detector. The detector, built at Cascina, near Pisa (Italy), is a very large Michelson interferometer, with 3 km-long arms. In this paper, following a presentation of the physics requirements, leading to the specifications for the construction of the detector, a detailed description of all its different elements is given. These include civil engineering infrastructures, a huge ultra-high vacuum (UHV) chamber (about 6000 cubic metres), all of the optical components, including high quality mirrors and their seismic isolating suspensions, all of the electronics required to control the interferometer and for signal detection. The expected performances of these different elements are given, leading to an overall sensitivity curve as a function of the incoming gravitational wave frequency. This description represents the detector as built and used in the first data-taking runs. Improvements in different parts have been and continue to be performed, leading to better sensitivities. These will be detailed in a forthcoming paper.

Abstract: The equations governing the linear acoustics of composites with two isotropic porous constituents are derived from first principles using volume-averaging arguments. The theory is designed for modeling acoustic propagation through heterogeneous porous structures. The only restriction placed on the geometry of the two porous phases is that the overall composite remains isotropic. The theory determines the macroscopic fluid response in each porous phase in addition to the combined bulk response of the grains and fluid in the composite. The complex frequency-dependent macroscopic compressibility laws that are obtained allow for fluid transfer between the porous constituents. Such mesoscopic fluid transport between constituents within each averaging volume provides a distinct attenuation mechanism from the losses associated with the net Darcy flux within individual constituents as is quantified in the examples.
