Abstract: With the aim of increasing the efficiency of maintenance and fuel usage in airplanes, structural health monitoring (SHM) of critical composite structures is increasingly expected and required. The optimized usage of this concept is subject of intensive work in the framework of the EU COST Action CA18203 “Optimising Design for Inspection” (ODIN). In this context, a thorough review of a broad range of energy harvesting (EH) technologies to be potentially used as power sources for the acoustic emission and guided wave propagation sensors of the considered SHM systems, as well as for the respective data elaboration and wireless communication modules, is provided in this work. EH devices based on the usage of kinetic energy, thermal gradients, solar radiation, airflow, and other viable energy sources, proposed so far in the literature, are thus described with a critical review of the respective specific power levels, of their potential placement on airplanes, as well as the consequently necessary power management architectures. The guidelines provided for the selection of the most appropriate EH and power management technologies create the preconditions to develop a new class of autonomous sensor nodes for the in-process, non-destructive SHM of airplane components.

Abstract: Closed-form integral expressions are derived here for a family of convergent Mathieu-type series and its alternating variant when their terms contain the Fox-Wright "p@J"q function. Some two-sided exponential bounding inequalities are then obtained for a class of Fox-Wright "p@J"q functions, thereby generalizing certain results of Luke. Finally, by means of the integral expressions obtained here, a number of two-sided exponential bounding inequalities are given for the aforementioned series.

Abstract: In astrocytes, the intracellular calcium (Ca2+) signaling mediated by activation of metabotropic glutamate receptor 5 (mGlu5) is crucially involved in the modulation of many aspects of brain physiology, including gliotransmission. Here, we find that the mGlu5-mediated Ca2+ signaling leading to release of glutamate is governed by mGlu5 interaction with Homer1 scaffolding proteins. We show that the long splice variants Homer1b/c are expressed in astrocytic processes, where they cluster with mGlu5 at sites displaying intense local Ca2+ activity. We show that the structural and functional significance of the Homer1b/c-mGlu5 interaction is to relocate endoplasmic reticulum (ER) to the proximity of the plasma membrane and to optimize Ca2+ signaling and glutamate release. We also show that in reactive astrocytes the short dominant-negative splice variant Homer1a is upregulated. Homer1a, by precluding the mGlu5-ER interaction decreases the intensity of Ca2+ signaling thus limiting the intensity and the duration of glutamate release by astrocytes. Hindering upregulation of Homer1a with a local injection of short interfering RNA in vivo restores mGlu5-mediated Ca2+ signaling and glutamate release and sensitizes astrocytes to apoptosis. We propose that Homer1a may represent one of the cellular mechanisms by which inflammatory astrocytic reactions are beneficial for limiting brain injury.

Abstract: We report new observations of the intermediate-frequency peaked BL Lacertae object 3C 66A with the MAGIC telescopes. The data sample we use were taken in 2009 December and 2010 January, and comprises 2.3 hr of good quality data in stereoscopic mode. In this period, we find a significant signal from the direction of the blazar 3C 66A. The new MAGIC stereoscopic system is shown to play an essential role for the separation between 3C 66A and the nearby radio galaxy 3C 66B, which is at a distance of only 6′. The derived integral flux above 100 GeV is 8.3% of the Crab Nebula flux and the energy spectrum is reproduced by a power law of photon index 3.64 ± 0.39stat ± 0.25sys. Within errors, this is compatible with the one derived by VERITAS in 2009. From the spectra corrected for absorption by the extragalactic background light, we only find small differences between the four models that we applied, and constrain the redshift of the blazar to z < 0.68. © 2011. Abstract: Severe xerostomia is a common late radiation consequence, which occurs after irradiation of head and neck malignancies. The aim of the present study was to analyze apoptosis and proliferation and their relationship during the late post-irradiation phase. C57BL/6 mice were locally irradiated in head and neck region with a single dose of 7.5 or 15 Gy and their submandibular glands were collected at 40 and 90 days after irradiation. To identify apoptotic cells, the TUNEL method was employed and immunohistochemistry with proliferating cell nuclear antigen (PCNA) was used for detecting proliferation. Histological changes at day 40 were mild in contrast to day 90 when glands of irradiated mice showed severe atrophy, vacuolization and mononuclear infiltration. Acinar cells, granular and intercalated duct cells of mice irradiated with 7.5 and 15 Gy expressed higher apoptotic index than cells of non-irradiated, control glands at both examined time points. At 40 days, a higher proliferation index in granular and intercalated duct cells was detected only in group irradiated with 7.5 Gy. At 90 days, proliferation index for all cell types in both irradiated groups was similar to the controls. According to our results, the imbalance between apoptosis and proliferation caused by X-irradiation may be the reason for gland impairment during the late post-irradiation phase.
