Abstract: The Perseus galaxy cluster was observed by the MAGIC Cherenkov telescope for a total effective time of 24.4 hr during 2008 November and December. The resulting upper limits on the gamma-ray emission above 100 GeV are in the range of 4.6 to 7.5 x 10^{-12} cm^{-2} s^{-1} for spectral indices from -1.5 to -2.5, thereby constraining the emission produced by cosmic rays, dark matter annihilations, and the central radio galaxy NGC1275. Results are compatible with cosmological cluster simulations for the cosmic-ray-induced gamma-ray emission, constraining the average cosmic ray-to-thermal pressure to <4% for the cluster core region (<8% for the entire cluster). Using simplified assumptions adopted in earlier work (a power-law spectrum with an index of -2.1, constant cosmic ray-to-thermal pressure for the peripheral cluster regions while accounting for the adiabatic contraction during the cooling flow formation), we would limit the ratio of cosmic ray-to-thermal energy to E_CR/E_th<3%. The upper limit also translates into a level of gamma-ray emission from possible annihilations of the cluster dark matter (the dominant mass component) that is consistent with boost factors of ~10^4 for the typically expected dark matter annihilation-induced emission. Finally, the upper limits obtained for the gamma-ray emission of the central radio galaxy NGC1275 are consistent with the recent detection by the Fermi-LAT satellite. Due to the extremely large Doppler factors required for the jet, a one-zone synchrotron self-Compton model is implausible in this case. We reproduce the observed spectral energy density by using the structured jet (spine-layer) model which has previously been adopted to explain the high-energy emission of radio galaxies.

Abstract: Global terrorist threats and illegal migration have intensified concerns for the security of citizens, and every effort is made to exploit all available technological advances to prevent adverse events and protect people and their property. Due to the ability to use at night and in weather conditions where RGB cameras do not perform well, thermal cameras have become an important component of sophisticated video surveillance systems. In this paper, we investigate the task of automatic person detection in thermal images using convolutional neural network models originally intended for detection in RGB images. We compare the performance of the standard state-of-the-art object detectors such as Faster R-CNN, SSD, Cascade R-CNN, and YOLOv3, that were retrained on a dataset of thermal images extracted from videos that simulate illegal movements around the border and in protected areas. Videos are recorded at night in clear weather, rain, and in the fog, at different ranges, and with different movement types. YOLOv3 was significantly faster than other detectors while achieving performance comparable with the best, so it was used in further experiments. We experimented with different training dataset settings in order to determine the minimum number of images needed to achieve good detection results on test datasets. We achieved excellent detection results with respect to average accuracy for all test scenarios although a modest set of thermal images was used for training. We test our trained model on different well known and widely used thermal imaging datasets as well. In addition, we present the results of the recognition of humans and animals in thermal images, which is particularly important in the case of sneaking around objects and illegal border crossings. Also, we present our original thermal dataset used for experimentation that contains surveillance videos recorded at different weather and shooting conditions.

Abstract: Farnesylation involves covalent linkage of eukaryotic proteins to a lipid moiety to anchor them into membranes, which is essential for the biological function of Ras and other proteins. A large cadre of bacterial effectors is injected into host cells by intravacuolar pathogens through elaborate type III–VII translocation machineries, and many of these effectors are incorporated into the pathogen-containing vacuolar membrane by unknown mechanisms. The Dot/Icm type IV secretion system of Legionella pneumophila injects into host cells the F-box effector Ankyrin B (AnkB), which functions as platforms for the docking of polyubiquitinated proteins to the Legionella-containing vacuole (LCV) to enable intravacuolar proliferation in macrophages and amoeba. We show that farnesylation of AnkB is indispensable for its anchoring to the cytosolic face of the LCV membrane, for its biological function within macrophages and Dictyostelium discoideum, and for intrapulmonary proliferation in mice. Remarkably, the protein farnesyltransferase, RCE-1 (Ras-converting enzyme-1), and isoprenyl cysteine carboxyl methyltransferase host farnesylation enzymes are recruited to the LCV in a Dot/Icm-dependent manner and are essential for the biological function of AnkB. In conclusion, this study shows novel localized recruitment of the host farnesylation machinery and its anchoring of an F-box effector to the LCV membrane, and this is essential for biological function in vitro and in vivo.
