The relationship context of human behavior and development.

Abstract: The influence of social relationships on human development and behavior is receiving increased attention from psychologists, who are central contributors to the rapidly developing multidisciplinary field of relationship science. In this article, the authors selectively review some of the significant strides that have been made toward understanding the effects of relationships on development and behavior and the processes by which relationships exert their influence on these, with the purpose of highlighting important questions that remain to be answered, controversial issues that need to be resolved, and potentially profitable paths for future inquiry. The authors' thesis is that important advances in psychological knowledge will be achieved from concerted investigation of the relationship context in which most important human behaviors are developed and displayed.

Are Psychological and Ecological Well-being Compatible? The Role of Values, Mindfulness, and Lifestyle

Abstract: Happiness and ecological well-being are often portrayed as conflictual pursuits, but they may actually be complementary In samples of adolescents (Study 1) and adults (Study 2), we tested this proposition and examined the role of three factors in promoting both subjective well-being (SWB) and ecologically responsible behavior (ERB) In both studies, individuals higher in SWB reported more ERB An intrinsic value orientation (Studies 1 and 2) and dispositional mindfulness (Study 2) related to higher SWB and ERB, while a lifestyle of voluntary simplicity (Study 2) related to higher ERB Further analyses showed that the compatibility of SWB and ERB was explained by intrinsic values and mindfulness These findings offer clues to a sustainable way of life that enhances both personal and collective well-being

On the Corporate Demand for Insurance

Abstract: Insurance contracts are regularly purchased by corporations. The Insurance Information Institute reports that “business insurance accounted for approximately 54.2 percent of the $79, 032,923,000 in direct property and liability insurance premiums written in the United States in 1978” (1979, p. 9). Yet even though annual premiums exceeded $42.8 billion,1 the importance of these contracts has been largely ignored by the finance profession. For example, the topic of insurance is completely absent from the index of virtually all corporate finance textbooks.

Capitalization versus Expensing: Evidence on the Uncertainty of Future Earnings from Capital Expenditures versus R&D Outlays

Abstract: We propose and implement a new method to estimate the relation between R&D investments and the uncertainty of future benefits from those investments. The empirical analysis compares the relative contributions of current investments in R&D and PP&E to future earnings variability using a sample of roughly 50,000 firm-year observations from 1972–1997. Evidence is strongly consistent with the hypothesis that R&D investments generate future benefits that are far more uncertain than benefits from investments in PP&E. Our results should help the current discussion on accounting for R&D and the methodology might be helpful in standard setting in other contexts as well.
