TL;DR: In this article, the magnetic and superconducting properties of the hybrid ruthenate-cuprate compound (RuSr) were investigated by means of zero-field muon-spin rotation (ZF-\ensuremath{\mu}SR) and dc magnetization measurements.
Abstract: We have investigated the magnetic and the superconducting properties of the hybrid ruthenate-cuprate compound ${\mathrm{RuSr}}_{2}{\mathrm{GdCu}}_{2}{\mathrm{O}}_{8}$ by means of zero-field muon-spin rotation (ZF-\ensuremath{\mu}SR) and dc magnetization measurements. The dc-magnetization data established that this material exhibits ferromagnetic order of the Ru moments [\ensuremath{\mu}(Ru)\ensuremath{\approx}1 ${\ensuremath{\mu}}_{B}]$ below ${T}_{C}=133$ K and becomes superconducting at a much lower temperature ${T}_{c}=16$ K. The ZF-\ensuremath{\mu}SR experiments indicate that the ferromagnetic phase is homogeneous on a microscopic scale and accounts for most of the sample volume. They also suggest that the magnetic order is not significantly modified at the onset of superconductivity.

TL;DR: The multiple neurotransmitter abnormalities, including those affecting dopamine, acetylcholine, γ-aminobutyric acid and norepinephrine and pathways, as well as both pre- and post-synaptic pathology, make pharmacological therapy of PSP a challenge.
Abstract: Progressive supranuclear palsy (PSP) is a degenerative condition of unknown aetiology that produces an akinetic-rigid form of parkinsonism characterised by early falls and abnormalities of extraocular movements. Mean age of onset is approximately 63 years, and mean survival from symptom onset is 9 years. Men are much more frequently affected than women. The classic clinical finding is supranuclear ophthalmoplegia, which may not present until late in the illness, if at all. The clinical diagnosis of PSP can be difficult to make, as the sites of pathology are heterogeneous. Structural and functional neuroimaging studies, although not specific for PSP, may be of some assistance in making the diagnosis. The definitive diagnosis of PSP requires the presence of both clinical and neuropathological evidence. Multiple anatomical sites are affected in PSP. The most consistently involved are the subthalamic nucleus, globus pallidus interna and externa, pontine nuclei, periaqueductal grey matter and the substantia nigra. The location of the pathology accounts for the clinical features. The histological hallmark of PSP is the presence of globose neurofibrillary tangles in the affected subcortical nuclei. Neurofibrillary tangles are composed of abnormally phosphorylated tau, a microtubule-associated protein that is involved in maintenance of the cytoskeleton. Abnormalities near or in the gene coding for tau are implicated in the pathogenesis of PSP. The multiple neurotransmitter abnormalities, including those affecting dopamine, acetylcholine, γ-aminobutyric acid and norepinephrine (noradrenaline) systems and pathways, as well as both pre- and post-synaptic pathology, make pharmacological therapy of PSP a challenge. Although an individual patient may respond to a drug, in general patients with PSP have a minimal response and a short duration of sustained benefit.

TL;DR: It is shown that both embryonic and adult rat hippocampal NS/PCs are immunoreactive for CB1 cannabinoid receptors, indicating that cannabinoids could act on CB1 receptors to regulate neurogenesis and supports the hypothesis that chronic HU210 treatment produces anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects likely via promotion of hippocampal Neurogenesis.
Abstract: The hippocampal dentate gyrus in the adult mammalian brain contains neural stem/progenitor cells (NS/PCs) capable of generating new neurons, i.e., neurogenesis. Most drugs of abuse examined to date decrease adult hippocampal neurogenesis, but the effects of cannabis (marijuana or cannabinoids) on hippocampal neurogenesis remain unknown. This study aimed at investigating the potential regulatory capacity of the potent synthetic cannabinoid HU210 on hippocampal neurogenesis and its possible correlation with behavioral change. We show that both embryonic and adult rat hippocampal NS/PCs are immunoreactive for CB1 cannabinoid receptors, indicating that cannabinoids could act on CB1 receptors to regulate neurogenesis. This hypothesis is supported by further findings that HU210 promotes proliferation, but not differentiation, of cultured embryonic hippocampal NS/PCs likely via a sequential activation of CB1 receptors, G(i/o) proteins, and ERK signaling. Chronic, but not acute, HU210 treatment promoted neurogenesis in the hippocampal dentate gyrus of adult rats and exerted anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects. X-irradiation of the hippocampus blocked both the neurogenic and behavioral effects of chronic HU210 treatment, suggesting that chronic HU210 treatment produces anxiolytic- and antidepressant-like effects likely via promotion of hippocampal neurogenesis.

TL;DR: It is concluded that use of the Numerical Rating Scale is tentatively supported for clinical practice with children of 8 years and older, and recommended further research on the lower age limit and on standardized age‐appropriate anchors and instructions for this scale.
Abstract: Despite wide usage of the Numerical Rating Scale (NRS) for self-report of pain intensity in clinical practice with children and adolescents, validation data are lacking. We present here three datasets from studies in which the NRS was used together with another self-report scale. Study A compared post-operative pain ratings on the NRS with scores on the Faces Pain Scale-Revised (FPS-R) in 69 children age 7–17 years who had undergone a variety of surgical procedures. Study B compared post-operative pain ratings on the NRS with scores on the Visual Analogue Scale (VAS) in 29 children age 9–17 years who had undergone pectus excavatum repair. Study C compared ratings of remembered immunization pain in 236 children who comprised an NRS group and a sex- and age-matched VAS group. Correlations of the NRS with the FPS-R and VAS were r = 0.87 and 0.89 in Studies A and B, respectively. In Study C, the distributions of scores on the NRS and VAS were very similar except that scores closest to the no pain anchor were more likely to be selected on the VAS than the NRS. The NRS can be considered functionally equivalent to the VAS and FPS-R except for very mild pain (<1/10). We conclude that use of the NRS is tentatively supported for clinical practice with children of 8 years and older, and we recommend further research on the lower age limit and on standardized age-appropriate anchors and instructions for this scale.

TL;DR: The age distribution of the crust is a fundamental parameter in modeling continental evolution and the rate of crustal accretion through Earth9s history, but this is usually estimated from surface exposures as mentioned in this paper.
Abstract: The age distribution of the crust is a fundamental parameter in modeling continental evolution and the rate of crustal accretion through Earth9s history, but this is usually estimated from surface exposures. The exposed Yangtze craton in eastern China consists mainly of Proterozoic rocks with rare Archean outcrops. However, the U-Pb ages and Hf isotope systematics of xenocrystic zircons brought to the surface in lamproite diatremes from three Proterozoic outcrop areas of the craton suggest the widespread presence of unexposed Archean basement, with zircon age populations of 2900–2800 Ma and 2600– 2500 Ma and Hf model ages of 2.6 to ca. 3.5 Ga or older. The zircons also record thermal events reworked on the craton ca. 2020 Ma (remelting of older crust) and 1000–850 Ma (addition of juvenile mantle material). The observation of deep crust significantly older than the upper crust will require revision of models for the rates of crustal generation through time.
