11 Jun 2019TL;DR: In this paper, a review of the relationship between the unique microstructures and the corresponding corrosion behavior of several metallic alloys fabricated by selective laser melting is presented, including Ti-based, Al-based and Fe-based alloys.
Abstract: Additive manufacturing is an emerging technology that challenges traditional manufacturing methods. However, the corrosion behaviour of additively manufactured parts must be considered if additive techniques are to find widespread application. In this paper, we review relationships between the unique microstructures and the corresponding corrosion behaviour of several metallic alloys fabricated by selective laser melting, one of the most popular powder-bed additive technologies for metals and alloys. Common issues related to corrosion in selective laser melted parts, such as pores, molten pool boundaries, surface roughness and anisotropy, are discussed. Widely printed alloys, including Ti-based, Al-based and Fe-based alloys, are selected to illustrate these relationships, and the corrosion properties of alloys produced by selective laser melting are summarised and compared to their conventionally processed counterparts.

TL;DR: In this paper, the influence of investment in key intangible resources and capabilities of firms, including intellectual capital (IC), financial capability (FC), and corporate social responsibility (CSR), on sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) and firm performance (FP) in an emerging country, Pakistan is investigated.
Abstract: This study investigates the influence of investment in key intangible resources and capabilities of firms, including intellectual capital (IC), financial capability (FC), and corporate social responsibility (CSR) on sustainable competitive advantage (SCA) and firm performance (FP) in an emerging country, Pakistan. The research model and its pertinent hypotheses are tested on a sample of 329 Pakistani small and medium enterprises (SMEs) by a structural equation model (SEM). The results exhibited a significant influence of the aforesaid factors on FP. However, SCA fully mediates the relationship between FC and FP and between CSR and FP, whereas SCA partially mediates the relationship between IC and FP. Taken together, the findings suggest the role of CSR and FC in indirectly spurring FP through SCA. Despite the limitations of this study, the results have several practical and theoretical implications for owners, managers, and policymakers.

TL;DR: The fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth behavior of two as-vacuum arc cast high-entropy alloys (HEAs) (Al 0.2CrFeNiTi0.2 and Al CrFeNi2Cu) were determined in this paper.
Abstract: The fracture toughness and fatigue crack growth behavior of two as-vacuum arc cast high-entropy alloys (HEAs) (Al0.2CrFeNiTi0.2 and AlCrFeNi2Cu) were determined. A microstructure examination of both HEA alloys revealed a two-phase structure consisting of body-centered cubic (bcc) and face-centered cubic (fcc) phases. The notched and fatigue precracked toughness values were in the range of those reported in the literature for two-phase alloys but significantly less than recent reports on a single phase fcc-HEA that was deformation processed. Fatigue crack growth experiments revealed high fatigue thresholds that decreased significantly with an increase in load ratio, while Paris law slopes exhibited metallic-like behavior at low R with significant increases at high R. Fracture surface examinations revealed combinations of brittle and ductile/dimpled regions at overload, with some evidence of fatigue striations in the Paris law regime.

TL;DR: The results indicate that the p-substituted phenols are mainly degraded by indirect electrochemical oxidation with hydroxyl radicals on a boron-doped diamond electrode.
Abstract: Electrochemical oxidation of some p-substituted phenols (p-nitrophenol, p-hydroxybenzaldehyde, phenol, p-cresol, and p-methoxyphenol) with electron-donating and -withdrawing substituents was studied to reveal the relationship between the structure and the electrochemical reactivity of p-substituted phenols using a boron-doped diamond electrode by voltammetry and bulk electrolysis. Voltammetric study shows that the oxidation peak potentials of p-substituted phenols become more positive with an increase of Hammett's constants, that is, the direct electrochemical oxidation of p-substituted phenol with an electron-withdrawing group is more difficult than that of p-substituted phenol with an electron-donating group. However, the p-substituted phenols with electron-withdrawing groups are degraded faster than those with electron-donating groups in bulk electrolysis, which is opposite to the result obtained on the Pt electrode. These results indicate that the p-substituted phenols are mainly degraded by indirect electrochemical oxidation with hydroxyl radicals on a boron-doped diamond electrode. Under the attack of hydroxyl radicals, the release of p-substituted groups from the aromatic ring is the rate-limiting step. Since electron-withdrawing groups are easy to be released, the p-substituted phenols with these groups are degraded faster than those with electron-donating groups. Therefore, the degradation rates of the p-substituted phenols rise with an increase of Hammett's constants.
