TL;DR: In this article, the authors analyzed 48 Paleogene, Neogene and Quaternary basaltic rocks from northeastern and east-central China for major-element composition, selected trace-element contents, and Pb, Sr and Nd isotopic systematics.
Abstract: Forty-eight Paleogene, Neogene and Quaternary basaltic rocks from northeastern and east-central China have been analyzed for major-element composition, selected trace-element contents, and Pb, Sr and Nd isotopic systematics. The study area lies entirely within the marginal Pacific tectonic domain. Proceeding east to west from the continental margin to the interior, the basalts reveal an isotopic transition in mantle source material and/or degree of crustal interaction. In the east, many of the rocks are found to merge both chemically and isotopically with those previously reported from the Japanese and Taiwan island-arc terrains. In the west, clear evidence exists for component(s) of Late Archean continental lithosphere to be present in some samples. A major crustal structure, the Tan-Lu fault, marks the approximate boundary between continental margin and interior isotopic behaviors. Although the isotopic signature of the western basalts has characteristics of lower-crustal contamination, a subcrustal lithosphere, i.e. an attached mantle keel, is probably more likely to be the major contributor of their continental “flavor”. The transition from continental margin to interior is very pronounced for Pb isotopes, although Sr and Nd isotopes also combine to yield correlated patterns that deviate strikingly from the mid-ocean ridge basalt (MORB) and oceanic-island trends. The most distinctive chemical attribute of this continental lithosphere component is its diminished U/Pb as reflected in the Pb isotopic composition when compared to sources of MORB, oceanic-island and island-arc volcanic rocks. Somewhat diminished Sm/Nd and elevated Rb/Sr, especially in comparison to the depleted asthenospheric mantle, are also apparent from the Nd- and Sr-isotopic ratios.

TL;DR: In this article, a simple but effective mechanism is proposed to account for the increase of ion kinetic temperature across an oblique or perpendicular shock, based on the nonadiabatic motion of the transmitted ions across the shock ramp, which can lead to an ion gyrophase bunching behind the shock.
Abstract: A simple but effective mechanism is proposed to account for the increase of ion kinetic temperature across an oblique or perpendicular shock. This mechanism is based on the nonadiabatic motion of the transmitted ions across the shock ramp, which can lead to an ion gyrophase-bunching behind the shock.

TL;DR: The orientation sensitivity of LGN cells to flickering square-wave gratings was measured in urethane-anaesthetized paralyzed cats, implying that they were more sensitive to visual contours pointing to the center of the retina.
Abstract: The orientation sensitivity of LGN cells to flickering square-wave gratings was measured in urethane-anaesthetized paralyzed cats. The mean ratio of the amplitude of peak responses to optimally oriented gratings to that elicited by gratings of the least effective orientation was 3.0 ± 0.3 (S.E.). 58% of the recorded neurons responded best to orientations within 30° of the meridional line joining their receptive field center with the fixation points (area centralis), implying that they were more sensitive to visual contours pointing to the center of the retina.

TL;DR: In this paper, the conditions for the formation of the β-form of isotactic polypropylene in the presence of a β-nucleator and the βα transition during heating were studied by wide angle X-ray diffraction.
Abstract: The conditions for the formation of the β-form of isotactic polypropylene in the presence of a β-nucleator and the β-α transition during heating were studied by wide angle X-ray diffraction. A conditional crystallinity of the β-form, X′β, and a structural disorder parameter, S, deduced from WAXD data were defined for the characterization of the β-form in addition to the K value. The results show that X′β and S obviously depend on the content of β-nucleator, and that the β-α transition during heating essentially consists in the melting of the β-form and the successive recrystallization to the α-form.

TL;DR: In this paper, the recombination lifetime τ of various samples containing hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) was determined by combining thermostimulated conductivity and photoconductivity measurements.
Abstract: By combining thermostimulated conductivity and photoconductivity measurements, the density of gap states g(E) as well as the product of the microscopic mobility μ and the recombination lifetime τ of various samples containing hydrogenated amorphous silicon (a-Si:H) have been determined. The results obtained on pure a-Si: H are compared with those of nitrogen-doped a-Si: H films and of multi-layer structures consisting of alternating layers of 570 A thick a-Si: H and 30 A thick a-SiNx: H. A large density of states in the latter material is attributed to interface states. The μτ products measured are several orders of magnitude larger than the product of drift mobility and deep trapping time obtained from time-of-flight and charge-collection experiments. The results suggest that in addition to dangling bonds there are other recombination centres.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effects of crystallization conditions, heating rate, and isothermal annealing on the melting behavior of isotactic polypropylene samples with predominantly β-form were studied by differential scanning calorimetry.
Abstract: Effects of crystallization conditions, heating rate, and isothermal annealing on the melting behavior of isotactic polypropylene samples with predominantly β-form were studied by differential scanning calorimetry. The results show that the β-form of these samples has a higher thermal stability and a lower recrystallization ability to the α-form after melting than the β-form of other samples.

TL;DR: A logic VERIFIER, which verifies the correctness of the gate-level design by comparing it with the behavioral description and an improved Boolean comparison technique, which assures the absence of errors without designer's assist are proposed.
Abstract: This paper proposes a logic VERIFIER, which verifies the correctness of the gate-level design by comparing it with the behavioral description. An improved Boolean comparison technique, which assures the absence of errors without designer's assist, is proposed. The partitioning and the minimization techniques are effective to reduce the storage required, and indispensable to verify practical sized circuits. If the design is judged incorrect, the system analyzes the result and show the area containing errors. Experimental results have proved that the VERIFIER can detect design errors completely, and indicate them to the designers in comprehensible form.

Abstract: A generalized definition of LP modes is introduced for an optical fiber with arbitrary refractive-index profile and arbitrary cross section, The orthogonality property of these LP modes has been considered. Based on a complete set of LP modes in a chosen reference fiber, a set of coupled-mode equations describing a practical fiber are established. Possible applications of these coupled-mode equations are demonstrated.

TL;DR: In this article, the transformation from coupled-mode equations for LP modes to those for ideal modes and the expressions of one set of modes in terms of linear combinations of the other sets of modes are studied, using the coupledmode theory.
Abstract: The transformation from coupled-mode equations for LP modes to those for ideal modes and the expressions of one set of modes in terms of linear combinations of the other set of modes are studied, using the coupled-mode theory. The expressions (including higher-order corrections) of modal fields and propagation constants for ideal modes are given in terms of those for LP modes in three different cases. Thus, cases where a LP mode can or cannot directly replace a corresponding ideal mode are made clear.

TL;DR: In this paper, Navier-Stokes equations of visco-fluid dynamics of homogeneous and incompressible fluid were applied to the Dirac-Pauli representation of a complex variable.
Abstract: This work is the continuation of the discussion of ref. [1]. In ref. [1] we applied the theory of functions of a complex variable under Dirac-Pauli representation, introduced the Kaluza “Ghost” coordinate, and turned Navier-Stokes equations of viscofluid dynamics of homogeneous and incompressible fluid into nonlinear equation with only a pair of complex unknown functions. In this paper we again combine the complex independent variable except time, and cause it to decrease in a pair to the number of complex independent variables. Lastly, we turn Navier-Stokes equations into classical Burgers equation. The Cole-Hopf transformation join up with Burgers equation and the diffusion equation is Backlund transformation in fact and the diffusion equation has the general solution as everyone knows. Thus, we obtain the exact solution of Navier-Stokes equations by Backlund transformation.

TL;DR: Because interference does not exist under the condition of perfect synchronism between channels, it may be expected that the multiple access capability is improved, the constraints of the nearfar problem are loosened, and the system will be immune to jamming.
Abstract: In conventional spread spectrum communication systems characterized by asynchronous multiple access SSRA (spread spectrum random access), interchannel interference is not zero and consequently the number of simultaneously communicable channels is small and the frequency utilization efficiency is low. The near-far problem is also important. For performance improvement SSSA (spread spectrum synchronous access) systems with orthogonal sequences have been proposed. This paper discusses performance of an SSSA communication system which is based on the use of a set of orthogonal sequences formed by adding +1 to each of the M sequences. Because interference does not exist under the condition of perfect synchronism between channels, it may be expected that the multiple access capability is improved, the constraints of the nearfar problem are loosened, and the system will be immune to jamming. The performance in the absence of synchronism between channels and with imperfect demodulation of the spread code is studied by theoretical analysis and simulation.

Abstract: The self-quenching streamer mode behaviors appear in both pure carbon dioxide and pure methane filling gas. In pure ethane and pure propane we saw the large saturated pulses, but no transition at any attainable voltage. When the carbon dioxide concentration is larger than 98% in argon-carbon dioxide mixtures, Q trl increases with the concentration.

TL;DR: It is illustrated how the Escher layout system can be used with several nontrivial examples, including a parallel sorting network and a FFT implementation.
Abstract: An Escher circuit description is a hierarchical structure composed of cells, wires, connectors between wires, and pins that connect wires to cells. Cells may correspond to primitive circuit elements, or they may be defined in terms of lower level subcells. Unlike other geometrical layout systems, a subcell may be instance of the cell being defined. When such a recursive cell definition is instantiated, the recursion is unwound in a manner reminiscent of the procedure call copy rule in Algol-like programming languages. Cell specifications may have parameters that are used to control the unwinding of recursive cells and to provide for cell families with varying numbers of pins and other internal components. We illustrate how the Escher layout system can be used with several nontrivial examples, including a parallel sorting network and a FFT implementation. We also briefly describe the unwinding algorithm.

TL;DR: In this paper, a system of two reticons was designed and tested at the Aladdin synchrotron radiation Laboratory of the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the measurement of position and angle shifts of a photon beam line.
Abstract: A system of two reticons has been designed and tested at the Aladdin synchrotron radiation Laboratory of the University of Wisconsin-Madison for the measurement of position and angle shifts of a photon beam line. Each reticon is a linear array of 256 photodiodes with a spatial resolution of 25 μm. The vibrations of the photon beam has been analyzed with this system and an oscillation at 36 Hz with an amplitude of 27 μm was observed. One of the reticons is located in the focal plane of a lens, thereby measuring the photon beam angle shifts. The other one is placed in the imaging plane of the second lens to indicate the changes in the source position. These signals are to be used to control a set of steering dipoles to stabilize the photon beam line.
