TL;DR: It is shown that below the ''knee'' in the isotherm, however, the peak height in lead stearate decreases slowly with increasing area, implying a first-order melting transition.
Abstract: We have used synchrotron radiation to study organic monolayers on water (''Langmuir films''). At high monolayer pressures, lead stearate (Pb(C/sub 17/H/sub 35/COO)/sub 2/) shows a powder peak at 1.60 A/sup -1/, implying an area per unit cell of 17.8 A/sup 2/ if the lattice is triangular. The correlation length is about 250 A. Lignoceric acid (C/sub 23/H/sub 47/COOH) shows a similar peak even though no heavy ions are attached. When the pressure is reduced, the peak in lead stearate does not observably move or broaden; below the ''knee'' in the isotherm, however, the peak height decreases slowly with increasing area, implying a first-order melting transition.

TL;DR: Reduction of the maximal firing rate from 55 to 40 pps showed that although minimization of fatigue at a cost of 10 percent reduction in the maximal force is possible, the correlation of the force response to the input signal remains high and linear.
Abstract: A computer-controlled, dual-channel neuromuscular stimulation system capable of manipulating skeletal muscle force with a wide range of action potential firing rates and motor-unit recruitment control strategies was designed and evaluated on the m. gastrocnemius muscle of the cat. The muscle force could be controlled with control strategies in which motor unit recruitment accounted for from 50 percent and up to 100 percent of the initial muscle force while firing rate induced the remaining force segment. The force response to linearly increasing recruitment was linear, whereas a saturation nonlinearity was evident in response to the firing rate input. Initial and terminal nonlinear force segments during 100 percent recruitment range were shown to be due to the viscoelastic components of the muscle fibers and their tendons. Recruitment of the muscle's motor units at rates that generated from 36 percent/s and up to 360 percent/s of the maximal force range was shown to correlate linearly to the input stimulus (R 0.9889). Reduction of the maximal firing rate from 55 to 40 pps showed that although minimization of fatigue at a cost of 10 percent reduction in the maximal force is possible, the correlation of the force response to the input signal remains high (R 0.9929) and linear. Some preliminary conclusions about rehabilitative applications were drawn based on the data presented in conjunction with previous studies.

TL;DR: Results for this bonding in Au $T-Al chemical bonding are in good agreement with the arguments presented by Pauling [The Nature of the Chemical Bond, Cornell Univ. Press, Ithaca, NY, 1960), pp. 431-435].
Abstract: We present ${L}_{2}$ and ${L}_{3}$ x-ray absorption spectroscopy measurements on all of the $5d$ transition-metal ($T$) elements and selected $T{\mathrm{Al}}_{2}$ intermetallic compounds. For the $5d$ elements we discuss the general trends in the strength of the near-edge "white-line" (WL) feature, the manifestations of the spin-orbit effects, and the dearth of WL strength for Pt and Au. The changes in the intensity of the $L$-edge WL's in the intermetallic compounds $T{\mathrm{Al}}_{2}$ ($T=\mathrm{Au}\mathrm{and}\mathrm{Pt}$) are discussed in terms of strong $T$-Al chemical bonding. Interestingly, our results for this bonding in Au${\mathrm{Al}}_{2}$ are in good agreement with the arguments presented by Pauling [The Nature of the Chemical Bond (Cornell Univ. Press, Ithaca, NY, 1960), pp. 431-435].

TL;DR: In this paper, the results of some studies of the composition of an aqueous phase in equilibrium with various three-phase assemblages in the system K2O-Al2O3-SiO2 were presented.
Abstract: In this article we present the results of some studies of the composition of an aqueous phase in equilibrium with various three-phase assemblages in the system K2O-Al2O3-SiO2 (figure 1) such as quartz-feldspar-muscovite, muscovite-leucite-corundum, and several others. We interpret the results as indicating that the solutes are dominantly uncharged species, specifically alkali-alumina and alkalialumina- silica species. TL;DR: In this article, the convergence of the TRUNC element for an arbitrary mesh geometry is proved and the error bounds for both moments and displacements are derived, and it is shown that the new element uses the same finite element space as Zienkiewicz's incompatible cubic element, but its variational formulation is different through the application of numerical integrations to a certain part of the stiffness matrix.
Abstract: The paper establishes a detailed mathematical analysis of the TRUNC element proposed by Bergan et al. [3] and developed further by Argyris et al. [1, 2]. It is shown that the new element uses the same finite element space as Zienkiewicz's incompatible cubic element [4], but its variational formulation is different through the application of numerical integrations to a certain part of the stiffness matrix. The convergence of the TRUNC element for an arbitrary mesh geometry is proved here and the error bounds for both moments and displacements are derived.

Abstract: The propagation reaction of 4′-methylenespiro[2-benzofuran-2,2′-(1,3-dioxolane)] (2), initiated by a free radical initiator, was studied by analysis of the polymer structure and by kinetic investigation. The results indicate that the polymer has the structure of poly [methylene-spiro[2-benzofuran-2,2′-(1,3-dioxolane)]-4′-ylidene-co-(2-oxotrimethylene)] (10). A reasonable propagation mechanism is proposed.

TL;DR: In this article, complete samples of galaxies and clusters of galaxies were used to analyze the power indices of the two-point correlation function of galaxy-galaxy and cluster-cluster with power indices about −1.8.
Abstract: Analyses for complete samples of galaxies and clusters of galaxies showed that the two-point correlation function of galaxy-galaxy and cluster- cluster have form of power law with power indices about −1.8 (Peebles, 1980; Bahcall and Soneira, 1983). Because the completeness of a sample means that we have observed completely the objects brighter than a given apparent magnitude in certain sky region. But, we know that a complete sample will be lack of faint objects at distant region. If we attempt to avoid the influences of any non-intrinsic properties on the analysis, we have to use the samples which are complete in certain interval of absolute magnitude.
