TL;DR: A new way to measure the imbalance is defined which surpasses the Imbalance Ratio and a set of null-biased multi-perspective Class Balance Metrics is proposed which extends the concept of Class Balance Accuracy to other performance metrics.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new class of microscopic jet flows is reported: for a certain range of physical parameters and geometrical configurations, a perfectly steady microscopic liquid thread can be formed by a laminar accelerating gas stream, eventually giving rise to a nearly monodisperse fine spray.
Abstract: A new class of microscopic jet flows is here reported: for a certain range of physical parameters and geometrical configurations, a perfectly steady microscopic liquid thread can be formed by a laminar accelerating gas stream, eventually giving rise to a nearly monodisperse fine spray. Some interesting characteristics for many applications of this robust and versatile flow and related atomization technique are highlighted. Concentric multicomponent liquid threads can also be produced. A theoretical model is presented that shows agreement with experiments.

TL;DR: Results show that type I cells have voltage-dependent sodium, calcium, and potassium channels, and particularly the O2-sensitive potassium current, play a key role in the transduction mechanism of arterial chemoreceptors.
Abstract: The ionic currents of carotid body type I cells and their possible involvement in the detection of oxygen tension (Po2) in arterial blood are unknown. The electrical properties of these cells were studied with the whole-cell patch clamp technique, and the hypothesis that ionic conductances can be altered by changes in PO2 was tested. The results show that type I cells have voltage-dependent sodium, calcium, and potassium channels. Sodium and calcium currents were unaffected by a decrease in PO2 from 150 to 10 millimeters of mercury, whereas, with the same experimental protocol, potassium currents were reversibly reduced by 25 to 50 percent. The effect of hypoxia was independent of internal adenosine triphosphate and calcium. Thus, ionic conductances, and particularly the O2-sensitive potassium current, play a key role in the transduction mechanism of arterial chemoreceptors.

TL;DR: It will be shown that EM transmission in this structure is feasible within a certain frequency band even if the transverse dimensions of the waveguide are much smaller than the associated free-space wavelength.
Abstract: At microwave frequencies, hollow metallic waveguides behave in certain aspects as a ``one-dimensional plasma.'' This feature will be advantageously used for simulating the propagation of electromagnetic (EM) waves in left-handed metamaterials provided the hollow waveguide is periodically loaded with split ring resonators. It will be shown that EM transmission in this structure is feasible within a certain frequency band even if the transverse dimensions of the waveguide are much smaller than the associated free-space wavelength. This effect can be qualitatively and quantitatively explained by the left-handed metamaterial theory, thus providing a new experimental validation for such a theory.
