Abstract: SummaryInterferon production and antiviral activity by L cells treated with double-stranded synthetic polynucleotide complex I:C is increased up to one hundred times by addition of DEAE-dextran. Highest interferon production (300 units) was observed when I:C (10 μg/ml) and DEAE-dx (200-400 μg/ml) were held in contact with the cells for a 12-hour period. However increased amounts of interferon were also produced when the inducer and DEAE-dx were removed 2 hours after their addition and the cultures were reincubated for 10 additional hours. The inhibitor produced was shown to have properties consistent with those of interferon.

Abstract: Epinephrine (0.5 μg), norepinephrine (0.5 and 0.1 μg) and dopamine (0.5 and 0.1 μg) when injected into the lateral ventricle of the rat brain, induced a depletion of growth hormone (GH) pituitary content. Unlike adrenergic compounds, other physiological constituents of hypothalamic tissue, i.e., serotonin (0.5 μg), acetylcholine (0.5 μg), vasopressin (8 mU) and oxytocin (8 mU) did not show any GHreleasing activity when given by intraventricular route. The effect of epinephrine, norepinephrine and dopamine appeared to be unrelated to changes of blood glucose or body temperature. These results support the view that adrenergic mediators participate in the neurohumoral control of GH secretion. (Endocrinology 83: 893, 1968)

Abstract: The Polian vesicles are tubules of variable length consisting of four layers: an external peritoneal epithelium, a connective tissue layer, a muscular layer, and an inner epithelium. The two simple epithelia produce a polysaccharide in their Golgi complexes. Their cellular junctions consist of an extensive “zonula adhaerens”, and an apical septate desmosome. Their surfaces possess microvilli and cilia. A basement membrane is lacking. The muscular layer is composed of paramyosin fibers. The connective tissue layer contains abundant collagen fibers that have a period of 640 A and are embedded in an acid mucopolysaccharide matrix. Amoebocytes containing waste products and an acid mucopolysaccharide enter the Polian vesicles from the coelom, pass through them, and empty into the lumen along with material secreted by the inner epithelium. While establishing close contact with cells of the muscular layer and inner epithelium the amoebocytes seem to transfer part of their contents to these cells.

Abstract: Le ricerche condotte sui tentacoli di Vaginulus borellianus hanno permesso di stabilire: a) l'esistenza nella porzione distale dei tentacoli (superiori ed inferiori) di un epitelio sensoriale di tipo olfattivo costituito da neuroni bipolari, cellule di sostegno e cellule basali. I prolungamenti distali dei primi due tipi di cellule si presentano particolarmente interessanti: nei recettori olfattivi si rinvengono ciglia e microvilli, numerosi e lunghi; nelle cellule di sostegno robuste digitazioni apicali percorse da uno spesso filamento assile, b) l'assenza, sia nel tentacolo superiore che in quello inferiore, di un complesso neuroendocrino del tipo di quello riscontrato in Helix, Arion ed altri Stilommatofori, c) la presenza nel tentacolo inferiore di una ghiandola unica, tubulare, in comunicazione con l'esterno e con una secrezione di tipo mucoso, simile a quella dei mucociti di altre superfici del corpo, o della ghiandola del piede di questa o di altre specie di molluschi.

Abstract: evidence of improvement of pseudofractures on long-term oral phosphate treatment has been given recently [4, 8]. The intestinal absorption of radiophosphate has been studied in animals [5, 6, 7, 10], and recently in human subjects [2, 3]. The test for evaluating the intestinal absorption of radiophosphate is based on the oral administration of 50 microcuries of Na2Ha2P04 and measuring the plasma radioactivity levels, expressed as the percentage of dose per litre of plasma, in the 4 h after the administration of the dose. We have tested by this method 2 cases of nutritional osteomalacia and a case of hypophosphataemic rickets; basal conditions showed low levels of plasma radioactivity in 2 cases (T. M. and G. Abstract: Publisher Summary The ascending mechanisms regulating autonomic and somatic hypothalamic activity and sham rage behavior were investigated in the acutely decorticated cat and compared with those involved in the regulation of wakefulness and sleep. Excitation and inhibition of sham rage behavior have been obtained both by reflex and by lower brain stem stimulation. The diencephalic mechanisms regulating rage behavior have been found to be subjected to a restraining influence from the carotid sinus pressoceptors. Transient pressoceptive inactivation by carotid occlusion induces outbursts of sham rage even when the carotid body chemoceptors have been previously inactivated; on the other hand, pressoceptive stimulation by increased intrasinusal pressure blocks spontaneous rage outbursts. Effective stimuli, when tested during an interval of quietness in the decorticated preparation, were without any action on postural tone, respiration, or arterial pressure. Although the brain stem sites yielding sham rage inhibition were intermingled with others when rage behavior was excited, the two influences appear to be anatomically segregated, as a change of effect could never be obtained by modifying the electrical parameters of stimulation but only by moving the stimulating electrode, even as little as 1–2 mm.

Abstract: However, immediately after TCT infusion the Fall in SA was interrupted so that the normal decline of the curve was halted. This effect was evident both when TCT was infused 110 minu~es after Ca-47 injection and 24 hours later. The plasma SA after TCT treatment suddenly rose in normal and pathological subjects. The decline of SA curve (below the last value before TCT infusion) started again 50 minutes to 4 hours later. In the late experiments (TCT given 24 hours after Ca-47 injection) the rise of plasma SA was always paralleled by a rise in SA of the urine. This would mean that calcium in the circulation was no longer being diluted by unlabelled calcium from reservoirs within the body, according to the studies of Milhaud et al. (1965) on the rat.

Abstract: ATPC+ ascites tumor transplants of different size were performed in NMRI mice. Hematoporphyrin chlorhydrate (Hp) was administered i.p. once daily during the seven days following transplantation. In the first series « in vivo » (1.9 x 106 cells; 0.1, 0.3, 0.9 mg of Hp), body weight, ascitogenic time (Tasc) and total ascitic volume (TV) were determined. Hematoporphyrin-treated animals showed, after the apprearance of the ascites, a body weight loss superior to controls, due to the drug toxicity caused by Hp vs. ascitic fluid interaction. Neither Tasc nor TV were significantly modified. In the second series « in vivo » (2.3 x 104 or 2.3 x 102 cells; 0.3 mg Hp), body weight loss was lower, Tasc was significantly increased and also the survival varied. In a third experiment ATPC+ cells were incubated « in vitro » with Hp in a range from 102 to 108 molecules/cell). No effect was observed on growth rate when the cells were transplanted into the host.
