TL;DR: Investigations suggest that as compared to 4-hydroxynonenal very low amounts of other 4-Hydroxyalkenals are formed by actively peroxidizing liver microsomes, and this finding may help to elucidate the mechanism by which lipid peroxidation causes deleterious effects on cells and cell constituents.

TL;DR: Spermatozoa from eight heteropterans, each representing a different family, have been examined by electron microscopy in order to determine whether there exist characters typical for this insect group, and two such characters were found.
Abstract: Spermatozoa from eight heteropterans, each representing a different family, have been examined by electron microscopy in order to determine whether there exist characters typical for this insect group Two such characters were found, namely bridges from the mitochondrial derivatives to the axonemal microtubules nos 1 and 5, and two or three, rather than one, crystalline bodies within the mitochondrial derivatives It is suggested that these characters are synapomorphic traits The heteropteran spermatozoa lack accessory bodies typical of spermatozoa from many related groups of insects The acrosome of the aquatic or semi-aquatic heteropterans (the infraorders Nepomorpha and Gerromorpha) has a peculiar inner structure consisting of tightly packed tubules On the common theme of the heteropteran sperm structure, there were many variations, and the spermatozoa of each species examined can be recognized

Abstract: Measurements of skull and horns in six subspecies of Rupicapra rupicapra L. (pyrenaica, ornata, cartusiana, balcanica, carpatica, caucasica) have been evaluated statistically. R. r. pyrenaica and ornata have the smallest skulls, the closest horn bases, and obliterated frontomaxillary fontanelles. They have also similarly patterned winter coats. On the basis of such features pyrenaica and ornata are separate from the other subspecies which do not seem to differentiate much from each other. On the other hand, pyrenaica has a much smaller body size than ornata as well as the shortest and thinnest horns, whereas ornata has the longest and stoutest horns of all the subspecies examined. Furthermore, the ornate's frontomaxillary fontanelle is much longer than pyrenaica' s. R. r. cartusiana has several features intermediate between the pyrenaica-ornata group and the other subspecies. On the basis of some palaeontologic evidence we advance the hypothesis that the chamois living on the Riss glaciation belo...

TL;DR: The findings are compatible with the main models of the tube inhibition mechanism proposed till now and the whole process from seeding to tube organization takes 3 h instead of 4 h and 30 min after pollination, as it does in vivo.
Abstract: No differences have been observed “in vivo” between Lycopersicum peruvianum compatible and incompatible pollen during activation and pollen tube emission and organization, that is until 4 h and 30 min after pollination. During pollen activation the main events are the setting free of rough endoplasmic reticulum (RER) cisterns which were “stacked” in the mature pollen, the increase in the number of polysomes, and a great activity of the dictyosomes. Immediately after germination of the vegetative nucleus and the generative cell move into the tube, the generative cell diviting to form the male gametes; the tube then becomes organized in four zones. This series of changes is similar to what has already been observed “in vitro” except that in vitro the generative cell remains undivided and the whole process from seeding to tube organization takes 3 h instead of 4 h and 30 min after pollination, as it does in vivo. Our findings are compatible with the main models of the tube inhibition mechanism proposed till now.

TL;DR: The crystal and molecular structure of the complex [Zn(II)-H2ATP-2,2′-bipyridyl]2·4H2O, determined by single crystal X-ray analysis provides a possible model for ATP transport and phosphate group transfer mechanism.
Abstract: Ternary complexes between metal ions, nucleotides and aromatic heterocyclic amines are being investigated by X-ray diffraction as possible models for enzyme–metal–substrate interactions1,2. Kennard and coworkers3 have reported the crystal structure of the ATP disodium salt. Although more recently several crystal structures of binary and ternary complexes between metal ions and nucleoside monophosphates have been reported, no structure combining metal complexes with nucleoside di- or triphosphates has been reported. Most divalent metal ions catalyse the nonenzymatic transfer of phosphate from nucleoside polyphosphates to various acceptors4. Therefore, these compounds in water solution undergo extensive hydrolysis in the presence of metal ions, leading to the formation of the monophosphates; for instance, at pH 6.5, Cu2+ accelerates the hydrolysis of ATP by a factor of about 300 (ref. 5). We report here the crystal and molecular structure of the complex [Zn(II)-H2ATP-2,2′-bipyridyl]2·4H2O, determined by single crystal X-ray analysis. The complex molecule provides a possible model for ATP transport and phosphate group transfer mechanism.

TL;DR: The chromatin condensation, the doublet number, consequent shape of the axoneme, and the location of the mitochondria along the sperm vary in the different species examined, and may serve as taxonomic characters.
Abstract: The gall midges (Cecidomyiidae) exhibit unusual sperm models and only the species with a giant axoneme have motile spermatozoa. To test if the sperm morphology agrees with the systematics of the family, the spermatozoa of 5 species of gall midges ( Cecidomyia pini, Braueriella phillyreae, Mycodiplosis sp., Aphidoletes (Phaenobremia) sp. and Ametrodiplosis thalictricola ) have been studied with the transmission electron microscope. Common features are: absence of an acrosome; absence of accessory elements in the axoneme; mitochondria not fused and so not transformed into mitochondrial derivatives; giant centrioles and axonemes with a large number of doublets; temporary motility. The chromatin condensation, the doublet number, consequent shape of the axoneme, and the location of the mitochondria along the sperm vary in the different species examined, and may serve as taxonomic characters. The possible origin of new doublets in giant axoneme is discussed.

TL;DR: Quantitative restoration of normal biochemical parameters preceded connective tissue repair in male New Zealand rabbit’s and no significant differences between Lm and insoluble elastin, salt-extractable collagen or total collagen/dry weight were found.
Abstract: The structural and elastic properties of the lung depend primarily on the concentration in connective tissue of proteins, collagen and elastin The relationships between biochemical and morphological aspects of pulmonary damage were studied in 50 male New Zealand rabbit’s, randomly divided into two groups of 25 animals, instilled with 245 IU of pig pancreatic elastase solution or physiological saline Animals were killed at 8, 15, 30, 60 and 90 days after treatment The changes in pulmonary morphology and in collagen and elastin content have been studied chemically and by light microscopy The left lungs were used for biochemical determinations of insoluble elastin and total, insoluble and salt-extractable collagens Morphometric measurements (mean linear intercepts or Lm) and histologic evaluations were performed on right lungs Three months after instillation, the elastase treated lungs showed a minimal degree of alveolar wall rupture, and no significant difference in Lm from the control group Quantitative restoration of normal biochemical parameters preceded connective tissue repair Statistical evaluations showed significative correlations among Lm, total collagen (p < 001) and insoluble elastin/dry weight (p < 001) No significant differences between Lm and insoluble elastin, salt-extractable collagen or total collagen/dry weight were found

TL;DR: The morphological evidence and other features such as the occurrence of mitochondria next or in contact with wall projections lead us to compare the pollen vegetative cell to a transfer-cell.
Abstract: Ultrastructural aspects of pore development inParietaria officinalis L. pollen are described. The main feature is the presence of intine wall projections formed in correspondence to the pores during the late microspore stage and persisting in the shedding pollen. This structure coexists with the tubules occurring in the pore and first appearing as evaginations of the plasma membrane.

Abstract: Ultrastructural study of the bronchial epithelium of elastase-treated rabbits revealed the presence of luminal atypical cilia resembling the pathological cilia seen in the tracheobronchial epithelium in animal models of human lung cancer. It is suggested that the results may contribute to knowledge of the mechanisms whereby compound cilia are produced.

TL;DR: The nucleus is an uncondensed structure provided with a regular outline and a large nucleolus, and the plastids constitute heterogeneous populations of organelles differing in size and shape as well as in number and arrangement of the thylakoids.
Abstract: Carpospores ofG. clavatum have been studied under the light and electron microscopes. They are wedge-shaped cells of 80–100 μm at their longest diameters. The nucleus is an uncondensed structure provided with a regular outline and a large nucleolus. The plastids constitute heterogeneous populations of organelles differing in size and shape as well as in number and arrangement of the thylakoids. Multiplicating plastids are also present. The mitochondria are small but have well developed cristae. The Golgi apparatus consists of very numerous active dictyosomes. Starch is the main storage substance but some large lipid bodies are also present. Labyrinthine polysaccharide aggregations are present in the carposporial cytoplasm. Multilayered bodies constitute a “sui generis” very conspicuous cell component.

TL;DR: In this article, a sufficient condition for the self-accessibility property of the pair (N, F) is given, that is, N is contained in the interior of the attainable set from F to N at a time smaller or equal to T, for every T > 0 (at the time T, if N is compact).
Abstract: LetF be a multivalued field on the manifoldM and letN be a submanifold ofM, possibly with boundary. We give a sufficient condition for the self-accessibility property of the pair (N, F), that is:N is contained in the interior of the attainable set fromN at a time smaller or equal toT, for everyT>0 (at the timeT, ifN is compact). To obtain such a condition, a modification of Petrov's implicit function theorem is proved (Ref. 1). Finally, a necessary condition for the self-accessibility property is given.

TL;DR: Immunokinetic data clarify some aspects of the clinical pharmacology of thymopoietin pentapeptide and must be considered for a rational schedule of treatment with the drug.
Abstract: 14 patients with classical or definite rheumatoid arthritis and a low number of E-rosette forming cells were given single doses of 5 mg and 50 mg of thymopo-ietin intravenously.Thymopoietin pentapeptide produced a dose-related sustained increase in E-rosette forming lymphocytes as shown by the decrease of thymopoietin dependent rosetting ratio. A single dose of 50 mg restored the number of E-rosette forming cells to normal after 12 h and this effect lasted 6 to 7 days. With the administration of 5 mg of thymopoietin pentapeptide, the basal values of E-rosette forming cells markedly increased after 12 h and returned to the pretreatment level on the 2nd day. These immunokinetic data clarify some aspects of the clinical pharmacology of thymopoietin pentapeptide and must be considered for a rational schedule of treatment with the drug.
