Abstract: The robustness of consensus in single integrator multi-agent systems (MAS) to coupling delays and switching topologies is investigated. It is shown that consensus is reached for arbitrarily large constant, time-varying, or distributed delays if consensus is reached without delays. This delay robustness holds under the weakest possible connectivity assumptions on the underlying graph, i.e., as long as the graph is uniformly quasi-strongly connected and switches with a dwell-time. The proof is based on a contraction argument and allows to remove technical assumptions that were used in previous publications. Moreover, the result also applies to non-scalar single integrators, an important extension toward consensus and rendezvous in higher dimensions.

Abstract: The discretization of first kind boundary integral equations leads in general to a dense system of linear equations, whose spectral condition number depends on the discretization used. Here we describe a general preconditioning technique based on a boundary integral operator of opposite order. The corresponding spectral equivalence inequalities are independent of the special discretization used, i.e., independent of the triangulations and of the trial functions. Since the proposed preconditioning form involves a (pseudo)inverse operator, one needs for its discretization only a stability condition for obtaining a spectrally equivalent approximation.

Abstract: A simulated annealing algorithm is employed to generate a stochastic model for a Berea sandstone and a Fontainebleau sandstone, with each a prescribed two-point probability function, lineal-path function, and ''pore size'' distribution function, respectively. We find that the temperature decrease of the annealing has to be rather quick to yield isotropic and percolating configurations. A comparison of simple morphological quantities indicates good agreement between the reconstructions and the original sandstones. Also, the mean survival time of a random walker in the pore space is reproduced with good accuracy. However, a more detailed investigation by means of local porosity theory shows that there may be significant differences of the geometrical connectivity between the reconstructed and the experimental samples. Abstract: To withstand desiccation, many invertebrates such as rotifers, nematodes and tardigrades enter a state known as anhydrobiosis, which is thought to require accumulation of compatible osmolytes, such as the non-reducing disaccharide trehalose to protect against dehydration damage. The trehalose levels of eight tardigrade species comprising Heterotardigrada and Eutardigrada were observed in five different states of hydration and dehydration. Although many species accumulate trehalose during dehydration, the data revealed significant differences between the species. Although trehalose accumulation was found in species of the order Parachela (Eutardigrada), it was not possible to detect any trehalose in the species Milnesium tardigradum and no change in the trehalose level has been observed in any species of Heterotardigrada so far investigated. These results expand our current understanding of anhydrobiosis in tardigrades and, for the first time, demonstrate the accumulation of trehalose in developing tardigrade embryos, which have been shown to have a high level of desiccation tolerance.
