Abstract: Inter-vehicle communication can become an important building block for ITS telematics applications like safety and warning functions. Mobile ad hoc networks (MANETs) can serve as a local wireless network for exchanging information between cars for cooperative driver assistance applications. For the routing of data packets in such large-scale MANETs consisting of vehicles on the road, geographic multi-hop packet forwarding is a promising approach. However, a main drawback is that it performs poorly in networks with many topology holes. In this paper, we propose a spatially aware packet routing approach to predict permanent topology holes caused by spatial constraints and avoid them beforehand. This approach is generic and can be used in combination with any existing geographic forwarding protocol as an extension. Our simulations demonstrate that spatial awareness can significantly improve geographic forwarding performance in situations with many permanent topology holes, like in dynamic vehicle networks.

Abstract: We study the ground-state properties and nonequilibrium dynamics of hard-core bosons confined in one-dimensional lattices in the presence of an additional periodic potential (superlattice) and a harmonic trap. The dynamics is analyzed after a sudden switch-on or switch-off of the superlattice potential, which can bring the system into insulating or superfluid phases, respectively. A collapse and revival of the zero-momentum peak can be seen in the first case. We study in detail the relaxation of these integrable systems towards equilibrium. We show how after relaxation time averages of physical observables, like the momentum distribution function, can be predicted by means of a generalization of the Gibbs distribution.

Abstract: Lanthanum hexaaluminate (LHA) with a magnetoplumbite structure is a promising competitor to yttria partially stabilized zirconia (Y-PSZ) as a thermal barrier coating (TBC), since most zirconia coatings age significantly, including undesired densification at temperatures exceeding 1100 °C. The microstructure of calcined lanthanum hexaaluminate powders and thermally sprayed coatings show a platelet structure. The magnetoplumbite structure is characterized by the highly charged La 3+ cation located in an oxygen position in the hexagonal close-packed structure of oxygen ions. Ion diffusion is strongly suppressed vertical to the crystallographic c -axis, thus hindering sintering densification. In contrast to the oxygen ion conducting zirconia, lanthanum hexaaluminate permits operating temperatures above 1300 °C because of its thermal stability and electrically insulating properties. This study describes the optimization of powder preparation for thermal spraying by spray drying and the development of parameters for atmospheric plasma spraying (APS) in order to produce homogeneous crystalline coatings with controlled micro-porosity and residual stresses. The phases were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD).

Abstract: In recent years, scientists have created artificial microscopic and nanoscopic self-propelling particles, often referred to as nano- or microswimmers, capable of mimicking biological locomotion and taxis. This active diffusion enables the engineering of complex operations that so far have not been possible at the micro- and nanoscale. One of the most promising tasks is the ability to engineer nanocarriers that can autonomously navigate within tissues and organs, accessing nearly every site of the human body guided by endogenous chemical gradients. We report a fully synthetic, organic, nanoscopic system that exhibits attractive chemotaxis driven by enzymatic conversion of glucose. We achieve this by encapsulating glucose oxidase alone or in combination with catalase into nanoscopic and biocompatible asymmetric polymer vesicles (known as polymersomes). We show that these vesicles self-propel in response to an external gradient of glucose by inducing a slip velocity on their surface, which makes them move in an extremely sensitive way toward higher-concentration regions. We finally demonstrate that the chemotactic behavior of these nanoswimmers, in combination with LRP-1 (low-density lipoprotein receptor-related protein 1) targeting, enables a fourfold increase in penetration to the brain compared to nonchemotactic systems.
