TL;DR: By systematic measurements on individual droplets it is demonstrated quantitatively that quantum fluctuations mechanically stabilize them against the mean-field collapse, and the interference of several droplets indicating that this stable many-body state is phase coherent.
Abstract: The collapse of a trapped ultracold magnetic gas is arrested by quantum fluctuations, creating quantum droplets of superfluid atoms.

TL;DR: A change detection approach based on an object-based classification of remote sensing data is introduced that classifies not single pixels but groups of pixels that represent already existing objects in a GIS database based on a supervised maximum likelihood classification.
Abstract: In this paper, a change detection approach based on an object-based classification of remote sensing data is introduced. The approach classifies not single pixels but groups of pixels that represent already existing objects in a GIS database. The approach is based on a supervised maximum likelihood classification. The multispectral bands grouped by objects and very different measures that can be derived from multispectral bands represent the n -dimensional feature space for the classification. The training areas are derived automatically from the geographical information system (GIS) database. After an introduction into the general approach, different input channels for the classification are defined and discussed. The results of a test on two test areas are presented. Afterwards, further measures, which can improve the result of the classification and enable the distinction between more land-use classes than with the introduced approach, are presented.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors measured the adhesion force exerted by a single gecko spatula for various atmospheric conditions and surface chemistries, and showed that humidity contributes significantly to gecko adhesion on a nanoscopic level.
Abstract: The hairy attachment system on a gecko's toes, consisting of one billion spatulae in the case of Gekko gecko [Ruibal, R. & Ernst, V. (1965) J. Morphol. 117, 271–294], allows it to adhere to nearly all surface topographies. The mechanistic basis for gecko adhesion has been intensely investigated, but the lowest hierarchical level, that of the spatula, has become experimentally accessible only recently. This report details measurements of the adhesion force exerted by a single gecko spatula for various atmospheric conditions and surface chemistries. Through judicious choice and modification of substrates, the short- and long-range adhesive forces are separated. In contrast to previous work [Autumn, K., Sitti, M., Liang, Y. C. A., Peattie, A. M., Hansen, W. R., Sponberg, S., Kenny, T. W., Fearing, R., Israelachvili, J. N. & Full, R. J. (2002) Proc. Natl. Acad. Sci. USA 99, 12252–12256], our measurements clearly show that humidity contributes significantly to gecko adhesion on a nanoscopic level. These findings are crucial for the development of artificial biomimetic attachment systems.

TL;DR: A new predictive strategy for current control of a three-phase neutral-point-clamped inverter does not require any kind of linear controller or modulation technique, achieving a different approach to control a power converter.
Abstract: A new predictive strategy for current control of a three-phase neutral-point-clamped inverter is presented. The algorithm is based on a model of the system. From that model, the behavior of the system is predicted for each possible switching state of the inverter. The state that minimizes a given quality function is selected to be applied during the next sampling interval. Several compositions of are proposed, including terms dedicated to achieve reference tracking, balance in the dc link, and reduction of the switching frequency. In comparison to an established control method, the strategy presents a remarkable performance. The proposed method achieves comparable reference tracking with lower switching frequency per semiconductor and similar transient behavior. The main advantage of the method is that it does not require any kind of linear controller or modulation technique, achieving a different approach to control a power converter.

TL;DR: In this article, the Gillespie and Nyholm analysis showed that electrons of parallel spin restrict themselves to separate regions of space, and hence follow the notion of localized electron pairs, which is a well-known application of these concepts.
Abstract: two-particle density for electrons of parallel spin, a function of two electrons’ coordinates (x, y , z and x’, y‘ , z‘) which gives the joint probability of finding one electron at position x , y , z and another electron of the same spin at position x’, y’ , z‘. The analysis showed that electrons of parallel spin restrict themselves to separate regions of space, and hence follows the notion of localized electron pairs. A well-known application of these concepts are the Gillespie and Nyholm
