TL;DR: It is shown that SEC alone is unable to completely separate plasma EVs from lipoprotein particles, however, combining SEC with a density cushion significantly improved the separation of EVs fromlipoproteins and allowed for a detailed analysis of the proteome of plasma EVs, thus making blood a viable source for EV biomarker discovery.
Abstract: The isolation of extracellular vesicles (EVs) from blood is of great importance to understand the biological role of circulating EVs and to develop EVs as biomarkers of disease. Due to the concurrent presence of lipoprotein particles, however, blood is one of the most difficult body fluids to isolate EVs from. The aim of this study was to develop a robust method to isolate and characterise EVs from blood with minimal contamination by plasma proteins and lipoprotein particles. Plasma and serum were collected from healthy subjects, and EVs were isolated by size-exclusion chromatography (SEC), with most particles being present in fractions 8–12, while the bulk of the plasma proteins was present in fractions 11–28. Vesicle markers peaked in fractions 7–11; however, the same fractions also contained lipoprotein particles. The purity of EVs was improved by combining a density cushion with SEC to further separate lipoprotein particles from the vesicles, which reduced the contamination of lipoprotein particles by 100-fold. Using this novel isolation procedure, a total of 1187 proteins were identified in plasma EVs by mass spectrometry, of which several proteins are known as EV-associated proteins but have hitherto not been identified in the previous proteomic studies of plasma EVs. This study shows that SEC alone is unable to completely separate plasma EVs from lipoprotein particles. However, combining SEC with a density cushion significantly improved the separation of EVs from lipoproteins and allowed for a detailed analysis of the proteome of plasma EVs, thus making blood a viable source for EV biomarker discovery.

TL;DR: In this paper, a three-input dc-dc boost converter is proposed for hybridizing alternative energy sources such as photovoltaic (PV) source, fuel cell (FC) source and battery.
Abstract: A new three-input dc-dc boost converter is proposed in this paper. The proposed converter interfaces two unidirectional input power ports and a bidirectional port for a storage element in a unified structure. This converter is interesting for hybridizing alternative energy sources such as photovoltaic (PV) source, fuel cell (FC) source, and battery. Supplying the output load, charging or discharging the battery can be made by the PV and the FC power sources individually or simultaneously. The proposed structure utilizes only four power switches that are independently controlled with four different duty ratios. Utilizing these duty ratios, tracking the maximum power of the PV source, setting the FC power, controlling the battery power, and regulating the output voltage are provided. Depending on utilization state of the battery, three different power operation modes are defined for the converter. In order to design the converter control system, small-signal model is obtained in each operation mode. Due to interactions of converter control loops, decoupling network is used to design separate closed-loop controllers. The validity of the proposed converter and its control performance are verified by simulation and experimental results for different operation conditions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a simulation model based on system dynamics method was developed for the Urmia Lake basin to estimate the lake's level and the results showed that changes in inflows due to the climate change and overuse of surface water resources is the main factor for 65% of the effect, constructing four dams is responsible for 25% and less precipitation on lake has 10% effect on decreasing the lake’s level in the recent years.
Abstract: Urmia Lake in Iran is the second largest saline lake in the world. This ecosystem is the home for different species. Due to various socio-economical and ecological criteria, Urmia Lake has important role in the Northwestern part of the country but it has faced many problems in recent years. Because of droughts, overuse of surface water resources and dam constructions, water level has decreased in such a way that one quarter of the lake has changed to saline area in the last 10 years. The purpose of this research is to determine the main factors which reduce the lake’s water level. To this end, a simulation model, based on system dynamics method, is developed for the Urmia Lake basin to estimate the lake’s level. After successful verification of the model, results show that (among the proposed factors) changes in inflows due to the climate change and overuse of surface water resources is the main factor for 65% of the effect, constructing four dams is responsible for 25% of the problem, and less precipitation on lake has 10% effect on decreasing the lake’s level in the recent years. In the future, the model also can be used by managers as a decision support system to find the effects of building new dams or other infrastructures.

TL;DR: In this paper, a novel modified starch/carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) composite films were prepared by a casting method and the effects of CMC addition on the some physical properties of the resulted blend films were investigated.
Abstract: article i nfo Article history: Received 29 March 2009 Accepted 2 June 2010 Novel modified starch/carboxy methyl cellulose (CMC) composite films were prepared by a casting method. The effects of CMC addition on the some physical properties of the resulted blend films were investigated. The blend film composed of 15% W/W CMC /starch, showed the lowest water vapor permeability (WVP) value (2.34×10 −7 g/m . h . Pa).The moisture absorption and solubility in water properties of the blend films exhibited similar trends. The addition of CMC at the level of 20% W/W starch caused an increase in the ultimate tensile strength (UTS) by more than 59% in comparison to the pure starch film without any significant decrease in the strain to break (SB). The measurement of color values showed that by the increasing of the CMC content in polymer matrix, the b values (yellowness), YI and ΔE of the blend films decreased and the L values (Lightness) and WI index increased. Industrial relevance: Ecological concerns have resulted in a renewed interest in natural and compostable materials, and therefore issues such as biodegradability and environmental safety are becoming important. Tailoring new products within a perspective of sustainable development or eco-design, is a philosophy that is applied to more and more materials. It is the reason why material components such as natural fibres, biodegradable polymers can be considered as interesting - environmentally safe - alternatives for the development of new biodegradable composites. Development of biodegradable materials based on starch has become a very attractive option and production of starch based plastic are gradually obtained considerable concern in the world. In this research, improvement of starch film properties is investigated.
