TL;DR: It is suggested that the acetyl CoA derived from one-carbon units in methylamine grown cells, condenses with oxalacetate to yield citrate and then isocitrate, followed by cleavage to succinate and glyoxylate, which is accomplished by the net synthesis of succinate from two molecule of methyamine and two molecules of CO2.

TL;DR: In this paper, the effect of spectator presence on gymnastic performance was examined in a series of studies and it was found that spectator presence led to a significant decrement in quality of performance when Ss were given a forewarning about the presence of the spectators.
Abstract: The effect of spectator presence on gymnastic performance was examined in a series of studies. It was found that spectator presence led to a significant decrement in quality of gymnastic performance when Ss were given a forewarning about the presence of the spectators but had no overall effect when Ss were not forewarned. This finding provides support for the anticipated evaluation modification of the Zajonc (1965) hypothesis of audience effects (cf. Paulus & Murdoch, 1971). Furthermore, the relationship between the initial level of skill of the Ss and the change in their performance during spectator presence in both studies suggested the need for additional modification of the Zajonc position.

TL;DR: In this paper, an optimum linear suspension which minimizes a linear combination of vehicle heave acceleration and suspension-guideway displacement is synthesized using a Wiener-Hoepf technique.
Abstract: The optimum linear suspension which minimizes a linear combination of vehicle heave acceleration (a passenger comfort index) and suspension-guideway displacement (a measure of required suspension strike length) is synthesized using a Wiener-Hoepf technique. This optimum suspension, which is independent of specific mechanical, magnetic, or fluid methods of implementation, is used to determine the form of active control required to make the performance of a flexible-skirted air cushion suspension approach the optimum performance. The optimally compensated suspension acceleration, flexible base, and gap height excursions are computed and compared with those of optimum passive suspensions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a general relation based upon laminated-plate theory is developed which relates the state of stress throughout the thickness of the fiber-reinforced composite laminate to experimentally determined surface strains.
Abstract: A general relation based upon laminated-plate theory is developed which relates the state of stress throughout the thickness of the fiber-reinforced composite laminate to experimentally determined surface strains. The usefulness of the developed relation is discussed through an example given for a typical graphite-epoxy structural laminate. Birefringent coatings employed as a method to determine laminate surface strains are investigated. Isochromatic disturbances in the vicinity of a laminate free-edge, due to a Poisson's ratio mismatch between coating and laminate and interlaminar stress transfer between discrete lamina of the laminate, are investigated through exact elasticity solutions.

TL;DR: It is shown that the BIFORE and discrete Fourier phase spectra have several analogous properties and a fast algorithm which yields the BifORE power andphase spectra in approximately N log2 N arithmetic operations is developed.
Abstract: Corresponding to the BIFORE (Binary FOurier Representation) Power spectrum, a phase spectrum is developed. The frequency content of each of the (log2 N+1) phase spectrum points is identical to that of the corresponding power spectrum points. It is shown that the BIFORE and discrete Fourier phase spectra have several analogous properties. A fast algorithm which yields the BIFORE power and phase spectra in approximately N log2 N arithmetic operations is also developed.

TL;DR: It is shown that the amount of shift can be detected in log2 N comparisons and (N − 1) transform coefficients are sufficient to characterize all shifts of the sequence.
Abstract: An orthogonal transformation is used to characterize the amplitude variation and shift of a real number N-periodic sequence, where, N = 2n for some positive integer n. The amplitude variation is characterized by a set of (log2 N + 1) numbers which are invariant to shifts of the sequence. Again, (N − 1) transform coefficients are sufficient to characterize all shifts of the sequence. It is shown that the amount of shift can be detected in log2 N comparisons.

TL;DR: In this paper, the positron lifetime spectra in methane gas were extended to a density of 5.2 and the quenching rate of orthopositronium was shown to be proportional to the gas density.
Abstract: Measurements of positron-lifetime spectra in methane gas at 23\ifmmode^\circ\else\textdegree\fi{}C, previously reported at gas densities less than 1.5 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ g/${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$, have now been extended to a density of 5.2 \ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{} ${10}^{\ensuremath{-}2}$ g/${\mathrm{cm}}^{3}$. The quenching rate of orthopositronium continues to be proportional to the gas density and corresponds to $^{1}Z_{\mathrm{eff}}=0.437\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}0.010$. The annihilation rates of positrons which do not form positronium deviate markedly from the linear density dependence observed at lower densities.

TL;DR: In this paper, a convergence study of the reciprocal-lattice expansion of linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals integrals in NaF was made by direct summation and by extrapolation after different numbers of terms.
Abstract: A convergence study is made of the reciprocal-lattice expansion of linear-combination-of-atomic-orbitals integrals in NaF. Converged integrals are obtained by direct summation and by extrapolation after different numbers of terms. It is found that extrapolation procedures give simple accurate results and substantially reduce labor involved. Comparison is made with other methods for obtaining convergence. Converged integrals are used as a basis for a self-consistent Hartree-Fock-Slater energy-band calculation for NaF using methods previously developed. Some transition energies are presented and correlated with available optical data. Self-consistent charge densities in NaF differ only slightly from a linear combination of ionic charge densities, confirming the ionic nature of NaF.

TL;DR: In this paper, an online method to compute the spectra associated with the Fourier transform M of a data sequence is developed, where M and N are finite positive integers, and the method provides a simple means of generating time-frequency-amplitude plots of Fourier power and phase spectra.
Abstract: An on-line method to compute the spectra associated with the Fourier transform M of a data sequence is developed, whereM and N are finite positive integers. This method provides a simple means of generating time-frequency-amplitude plots of Fourier power and phase spectra. Such plots may be used to display Fourier spectra for pedagogical purposes, and in the general area of the classification of transient waveforms whose durations are unknown. An illustrative example is included.

Abstract: Variation of geometric parameters, including supply area, control area, chamber length, and outlet diameter, of a large scale, modular design vortex fluid amplifier with single supply and control jets, has confirmed and extended a previously published design method, developed for vortex amplifiers with symmetric flow fields. This allows application of the method to devices which are more representative of practical, production type components.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors test whether race has a significant effect on property values and find that black buyers have a positive influence on housing prices and the races of both buyer and seller and the state of the housing market are significant in explaining housing prices.
Abstract: This study was undertaken to test whether race has a significant effect on property values. We have assumed that the price paid for a housing unit is a function of its assessed value and either the race of the buyer (Model I) or the race of both buyer and seller and the state of the housing market (Model II). On the basis of these models, the evidence from our sample is that (1) blacks have a positive influence on housing prices and (2) the races of both buyer and seller and the state of the housing market are significant in explaining housing prices.

TL;DR: Taebel as mentioned in this paper proposed a "dialectical organization" that would devote itself, even at the risk of self-destruction, totally to the client and would operate by an ethical code quite con trary to that of the traditional bureaucracy.
Abstract: Delbert A. Taebel, Ph.D., is Assistant Professor of Urban Affairs and. Government, and Assis tant Director for Graduate Studies, Institute of Urban Studies, University of Texas at Arling ton, Arlington, Texas. Since the early 1960s vast segments of American society have become more active politically. This has been a striking char acteristic of the nation's politics in the past decade. No longer are groups and organiza tions content to let formal governmental bodies monopolize political decision-mak ing. Minority groups, especially blacks, were the first to become involved in po litical action at the beginning of the sixties, and others—such as student organizations, churches, and neighborhood groups—later became active. Even local garden clubs now participate in politics and make loud demands for protection of the environment. Yet, there is growing awareness that these efforts have been largely fruitless, that the political system remains unresponsive. The governmental bureaucracy has been among the most unresponsive components. Both scholars and practitioners have offered a plethora of recommendations and exhorta tions to remedy this deficiency. Approaches have been espoused that either focus on the bureaucracy itself or on client groups. In general, the former approach is viewed as more propitious. Indeed, the advocacy role of the bureaucrat is now a highly fash ionable concept in the scholarly com munity, especially in schools of public ad ministration, social work, public health, and the like. Within the last several years, a body of literature has developed that pre scribes ways in which the governmental bu reaucrat can play a truly meaningful and relevant role in ameliorating serious prob lems of the poor and disfranchised. For ex ample, instead of the traditional bureau cracy, White posits a "dialectical organiza tion" that would devote itself, even at the risk of self-destruction, totally to the client.1 This dialectical organization of course would operate by an ethical code quite con trary to that of the traditional bureaucracy. The second approach focuses on organ izing client groups to make the bureaucracy

TL;DR: In this paper, confidence intervals and significance tests for the population mean were developed for continuous data with outliers, where either the smallest observation or the largest observation is an outlier, and two kinds of intervals and tests with this property were developed.
Abstract: The (continuous) data are n observations that are believed to be a random sample from a symmetrical population. Confidence intervals and significance tests for the population mean are desired. There is, however, the possibility that either the smallest observation or the largest observation is an outlier. That is, the population providing this observation differs from the symmetrical population providing the other n - 1 observations. If this occurs, intervals and tests are desired for the mean of the population providing the other n - 1 observations. Some investigation difficulties can be overcome if intervals and tests can be developed that are simultaneously usable for all of these three situations (a confidence coefficient, or significance level, has the same value for all three situations). Two kinds of intervals and tests with this property are developed. These results always involve both the next to smallest observations and should have at least moderately high efficiencies. Also, some extensions are considered, such as allowing each observation to be from a different population.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors investigate the extent to which the imposition of OFDI regulations led firms to depart from traditional corporate financing policies or techniques, and what relationship this reaction had to evolution and change in the money and capital markets.
Abstract: Since 1968, U.S. multinational companies have been operating under compulsory governmental restrictions upon foreign direct investment, administered by the U.S. Department of Commerce, Office of Foreign Direct Investment. This study asks to what extent the imposition of OFDI regulations led firms to depart from traditional corporate financing policies or techniques, and what relationship this reaction had to evolution and change in the money and capital markets.
