TL;DR: A novel Schatten p-Norm optimization framework that unifies different norm formulations and an efficient algorithm derived to solve the new objective is derived and followed by the rigorous theoretical proof on the convergence.
Abstract: As an emerging machine learning and information retrieval technique, the matrix completion has been successfully applied to solve many scientific applications, such as collaborative prediction in information retrieval, video completion in computer vision, etc. The matrix completion is to recover a low-rank matrix with a fraction of its entries arbitrarily corrupted. Instead of solving the popularly used trace norm or nuclear norm based objective, we directly minimize the original formulations of trace norm and rank norm. We propose a novel Schatten p-Norm optimization framework that unifies different norm formulations. An efficient algorithm is derived to solve the new objective and followed by the rigorous theoretical proof on the convergence. The previous main solution strategy for this problem requires computing singular value decompositions - a task that requires increasingly cost as matrix sizes and rank increase. Our algorithm has closed form solution in each iteration, hence it converges fast. As a consequence, our algorithm has the capacity of solving large-scale matrix completion problems. Empirical studies on the recommendation system data sets demonstrate the promising performance of our new optimization framework and efficient algorithm.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors introduce the topic of microfinancing to a wider audience of management researchers and identify opportunities for future research in this new and growing area, which is an emerging phenomenon that opens access to capital for individuals previously shut out from financial services.
Abstract: Executive Overview Microfinance is an emerging phenomenon that opens access to capital for individuals previously shut out from financial services. In its direct engagement with the poor, microfinance represents a new way for financial capital to potentially stimulate economic growth in developing countries. However, microfinance is poorly understood, and it remains unclear whether it delivers on its promises. The goal of this paper is to introduce the topic of microfinancing to a wider audience of management researchers and to identify opportunities for future research in this new and growing area.

TL;DR: In this article, the authors compared HR and line executives' evaluations of the effectiveness of the HR function in terms of its service delivery, roles, and contributions to the firm, and found that HR executives consistently rated the functions' effectiveness higher than did line executives, and the greatest differences were observed on the more important and/or strategic aspects of HR.
Abstract: This study compares HR and line executives' evaluations of the effectiveness of the HR function in terms of its service delivery, roles, and contributions to the firm. Survey responses from 44 HR and 59 line executives from 14 companies indicated that (a) HR executives consistently rated the functions' effectiveness higher than did line executives, and (b) the greatest differences were observed on the more important and/or strategic aspects of HR. Implications for improving HR effectiveness are discussed. © 2001 John Wiley & Sons, Inc.
