Abstract: This paper studies the nature of capital adjustment at the plant-level. We use an indirect inference procedure to estimate the structural parameters of a rich specification of capital adjustment costs. In effect, the parameters are optimally chosen to reproduce the nonlinear relationship between investment and profitability that we uncover in the plant-level data. Our findings indicate that a model which mixes both convex and nonconvex adjustment costs with irreversibility fits the data best.

Abstract: We present a fully-coupled monolithic formulation of the fluid-structure interaction of an incompressible fluid on a moving domain with a nonlinear hyperelastic solid. The arbitrary Lagrangian–Eulerian description is utilized for the fluid subdomain and the Lagrangian description is utilized for the solid subdomain. Particular attention is paid to the derivation of various forms of the conservation equations; the conservation properties of the semi-discrete and fully discretized systems; a unified presentation of the generalized-α time integration method for fluid-structure interaction; and the derivation of the tangent matrix, including the calculation of shape derivatives. A NURBS-based isogeometric analysis methodology is used for the spatial discretization and three numerical examples are presented which demonstrate the good behavior of the methodology.

Abstract: Much recent evidence suggests some dramatic differences in the way people learn perceptual categories, depending on exactly how the categories were constructed. Four different kinds of category-learning tasks are currently popular-rule-based tasks, information-integration tasks, prototype distortion tasks, and the weather prediction task. The cognitive, neuropsychological, and neuroimaging results obtained using these four tasks are qualitatively different. Success in rule-based (explicit reasoning) tasks depends on frontal-striatal circuits and requires working memory and executive attention. Success in information-integration tasks requires a form of procedural learning and is sensitive to the nature and timing of feedback. Prototype distortion tasks induce perceptual (visual cortical) learning. A variety of different strategies can lead to success in the weather prediction task. Collectively, results from these four tasks provide strong evidence that human category learning is mediated by multiple, qualitatively distinct systems.

Abstract: It is shown that the propositional mu-calculus is equivalent in expressive power to finite automata on infinite trees. Since complementation is trivial in the mu-calculus, the equivalence provides a radically simplified, alternative proof of M.O. Rabin's (1989) complementation lemma for tree automata, which is the heart of one of the deepest decidability results. It is also shown how mu-calculus can be used to establish determinacy of infinite games used in earlier proofs of complementation lemma, and certain games used in the theory of online algorithms. >

Abstract: The Transiting Exoplanet Survey Satellite (TESS) will discover thousands of exoplanets in orbit around the brightest stars in the sky. In a two-year survey, TESS will monitor more than 500,000 stars for temporary drops in brightness caused by planetary transits. This first-ever spaceborne all-sky transit survey will identify planets ranging from Earth-sized to gas giants, around a wide range of stellar types and orbital distances. No ground-based survey can achieve this feat. A large fraction of TESS target stars will be 30-100 times brighter than those observed by Kepler satellite, and therefore TESS . planets will be far easier to characterize with follow-up observations. TESS will make it possible to study the masses, sizes, densities, orbits, and atmospheres of a large cohort of small planets, including a sample of rocky worlds in the habitable zones of their host stars. TESS will provide prime targets for observation with the James Webb Space Telescope (JWST), as well as other large ground-based and space-based telescopes of the future. TESS data will be released with minimal delay (no proprietary period), inviting immediate community-wide efforts to study the new planets. The TESS legacy will be a catalog of the very nearest and brightest main-sequence stars hosting transiting exoplanets, thus providing future observers with the most favorable targets for detailed investigations.
