TL;DR: High basal plane hydrogen evolution reaction activity is discovered for the Janus monolayer, and DFT calculation implies that the activity originates from the synergistic effect of the intrinsic defects and structural strain inherent in theJanus structure.
Abstract: The crystal configuration of sandwiched S–Mo–Se structure (Janus SMoSe) at the monolayer limit has been synthesized and carefully characterized in this work. By controlled sulfurization of monolayer MoSe2, the top layer of selenium atoms is substituted by sulfur atoms, while the bottom selenium layer remains intact. The structure of this material is systematically investigated by Raman, photoluminescence, transmission electron microscopy, and X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy and confirmed by time-of-flight secondary ion mass spectrometry. Density functional theory (DFT) calculations are performed to better understand the Raman vibration modes and electronic structures of the Janus SMoSe monolayer, which are found to correlate well with corresponding experimental results. Finally, high basal plane hydrogen evolution reaction activity is discovered for the Janus monolayer, and DFT calculation implies that the activity originates from the synergistic effect of the intrinsic defects and structural strain inhe...

TL;DR: Step-by-step controllable thermal reduction of individual graphene oxide sheets, incorporated into multiterminal field effect devices, was carried out at low temperatures with simultaneous electrical measurements.
Abstract: Step-by-step controllable thermal reduction of individual graphene oxide sheets, incorporated into multiterminal field effect devices, was carried out at low temperatures (125−240 °C) with simultaneous electrical measurements. Symmetric hysteresis-free ambipolar (electron- and hole-type) gate dependences were observed as soon as the first measurable resistance was reached. The conductivity of each of the fabricated devices depended on the level of reduction (was increased more than 106 times as reduction progressed), strength of the external electrical field, density of the transport current, and temperature.

TL;DR: The acoustic analog of the Zeeman effect in a subwavelength meta-atom consisting of a resonant ring cavity biased by a circulating fluid is introduced, producing giant acoustic nonreciprocity in a compact device.
Abstract: Acoustic isolation and nonreciprocal sound transmission are highly desirable in many practical scenarios. They may be realized with nonlinear or magneto-acoustic effects, but only at the price of high power levels and impractically large volumes. In contrast, nonreciprocal electromagnetic propagation is commonly achieved based on the Zeeman effect, or modal splitting in ferromagnetic atoms induced by a magnetic bias. Here, we introduce the acoustic analog of this phenomenon in a subwavelength meta-atom consisting of a resonant ring cavity biased by a circulating fluid. The resulting angular momentum bias splits the ring’s azimuthal resonant modes, producing giant acoustic nonreciprocity in a compact device. We applied this concept to build a linear, magnetic-free circulator for airborne sound waves, observing up to 40-decibel nonreciprocal isolation at audible frequencies.

13 May 2002TL;DR: In this paper, insights on why image quality assessment is so difficult are provided by pointing out the weaknesses of the error sensitivity based framework and a new philosophy in designing image quality metrics is proposed.
Abstract: Image quality assessment plays an important role in various image processing applications. A great deal of effort has been made in recent years to develop objective image quality metrics that correlate with perceived quality measurement. Unfortunately, only limited success has been achieved. In this paper, we provide some insights on why image quality assessment is so difficult by pointing out the weaknesses of the error sensitivity based framework, which has been used by most image quality assessment approaches in the literature. Furthermore, we propose a new philosophy in designing image quality metrics: The main function of the human eyes is to extract structural information from the viewing field, and the human visual system is highly adapted for this purpose. Therefore, a measurement of structural distortion should be a good approximation of perceived image distortion. Based on the new philosophy, we implemented a simple but effective image quality indexing algorithm, which is very promising as shown by our current results.

30 May 2010TL;DR: This work constructs an efficient identity based encryption system based on the standard learning with errors (LWE) problem and extends this basic technique to an adaptively-secure IBE and a Hierarchical IBE.
Abstract: We construct an efficient identity based encryption system based on the standard learning with errors (LWE) problem. Our security proof holds in the standard model. The key step in the construction is a family of lattices for which there are two distinct trapdoors for finding short vectors. One trapdoor enables the real system to generate short vectors in all lattices in the family. The other trapdoor enables the simulator to generate short vectors for all lattices in the family except for one. We extend this basic technique to an adaptively-secure IBE and a Hierarchical IBE.
