Abstract: Summary: The Dual Organellar GenoMe Annotator (DOGMA) automates the annotation of organellar (plant chloroplast and animal mitochondrial) genomes. It is a Web-based package that allows the use of BLAST searches against a custom database, and conservation of basepairing in the secondary structure of animal mitochondrial tRNAs to identify and annotate genes. DOGMA provides a graphical user interface for viewing and editing annotations. Annotations are stored on our password-protected server to enable repeated sessions of working on the same genome. Finished annotations can be extracted for direct submission to GenBank. Abstract: The study reported here raises some questions about the conventional wisdom that the Internet creates a “level playing field” for large and small retailers and for retailers with and without an established reputation. In our study, consumers recognized differences in size and reputation among Internet stores, and those differences influenced their assessments of store trustworthiness and their perception of risk, as well as their willingness to patronize the store. After describing our research methods and results, we draw some implications for Internet merchants.

Abstract: Solid-state electrolytes are attracting increasing interest for electrochemical energy storage technologies. In this Review, we provide a background overview and discuss the state of the art, ion-transport mechanisms and fundamental properties of solid-state electrolyte materials of interest for energy storage applications. We focus on recent advances in various classes of battery chemistries and systems that are enabled by solid electrolytes, including all-solid-state lithium-ion batteries and emerging solid-electrolyte lithium batteries that feature cathodes with liquid or gaseous active materials (for example, lithium–air, lithium–sulfur and lithium–bromine systems). A low-cost, safe, aqueous electrochemical energy storage concept with a ‘mediator-ion’ solid electrolyte is also discussed. Advanced battery systems based on solid electrolytes would revitalize the rechargeable battery field because of their safety, excellent stability, long cycle lives and low cost. However, great effort will be needed to implement solid-electrolyte batteries as viable energy storage systems. In this context, we discuss the main issues that must be addressed, such as achieving acceptable ionic conductivity, electrochemical stability and mechanical properties of the solid electrolytes, as well as a compatible electrolyte/electrode interface. This Review details recent advances in battery chemistries and systems enabled by solid electrolytes, including all-solid-state lithium-ion, lithium–air, lithium–sulfur and lithium–bromine batteries, as well as an aqueous battery concept with a mediator-ion solid electrolyte.

Abstract: Observations of nearby galaxies reveal a strong correlation between the mass of the central dark object MBH and the velocity dispersionof the host galaxy, of the form logðMBH=M� Þ¼ � þ � logð�=� 0Þ; how- ever, published estimates of the slopespan a wide range (3.75-5.3). Merritt & Ferrarese have argued that low slopes (d4) arise because of neglect of random measurement errors in the dispersions and an incorrect choice for the dispersion of the Milky Way Galaxy. We show that these explanations and several others account for at most a small part of the slope range. Instead, the range of slopes arises mostly because of sys- tematic differences in the velocity dispersions used by different groups for the same galaxies. The origin of these differences remains unclear, but we suggest that one significant component of the difference results from Ferrarese & Merritt's extrapolation of central velocity dispersions to re= 8( re is the effective radius) using an empirical formula. Another component may arise from dispersion-dependent systematic errors in the mea- surements. A new determination of the slope using 31 galaxies yields � ¼ 4:02 � 0:32, � ¼ 8:13 � 0:06 for � 0 ¼ 200 km s � 1 . The MBH-� relation has an intrinsic dispersion in log MBH that is no larger than 0.25-0.3 dex and may be smaller if observational errors have been underestimated. In an appendix, we present a simple kinematic model for the velocity-dispersion profile of the Galactic bulge.
