Depressive Symptoms and Increased Risk of Stroke Mortality Over a 29-Year Period

Abstract: Background Several lines of evidence indicate that depression is importantly associated with cardiovascular disease end points. However, little is known about the role of depression in stroke mortality. Methods This study examined the association between depressive symptoms and stroke mortality in a prospective study of behavioral, social, and psychological factors related to health and mortality in a community sample of 6676 initially stroke-free adults (45.8% male; 79.1% white; mean age at baseline, 43.4 years) from Alameda County, California. Depressive symptoms were assessed by the 18-item Human Population Laboratory Depression Scale. Cox proportional hazards regression models were used to evaluate the impact of depressive symptoms after controlling for age, sex, race, and other confounders. Results A total of 169 stroke deaths occurred during 29 years of follow-up. Reporting 5 or more depressive symptoms at baseline was associated with increased risk of stroke mortality, after adjusting for age, sex, and race (hazard ratio, 1.66; 95% confidence interval, 1.16-2.39; P P Conclusions This population-based study provides the strongest epidemiological evidence to date for a significant relationship between depressive symptoms and stroke mortality. These results contribute to the growing literature on the adverse health effects of depression.

A simple method for estimating average number of nucleotide substitutions within and between populations from restriction data.

Abstract: A simple method is proposed for estimating the average number of nucleotide substitutions per site within and between populations for the case where a large number of individuals are examined for many restriction enzymes. This method gives essentially the same results as those obtained by Nei and Li's method but saves a large amount of computer time. The variances of the quantities estimated can be obtained by the jackknife method, and these variances are very similar to those obtained by Nei and Jin's more sophisticated method. A similar method can also be applied to DNA sequence data.

Hyper-CVAD and high-dose methotrexate/cytarabine followed by stem-cell transplantation: an active regimen for aggressive mantle-cell lymphoma.

Abstract: PURPOSEDiffuse and nodular forms of mantle-cell lymphoma (MCL) are consistently associated with poor prognosis. In an effort to improve the outcome, we adopted a treatment plan that consisted of four courses of fractionated cyclophosphamide (CY) 1,800 mg/m2 administered with doxorubicin (DOX), vincristine (VCR), and dexamethasone (Hyper-CVAD) that alternated with high-dose methotrexate (MTX) and cytarabine (Ara-C). After four courses, patients were consolidated with high-dose CY, total-body irradiation, and autologous or allogeneic blood or marrow stem-cell transplantation.PATIENTS AND METHODSForty-five patients were enrolled; 25 patients were previously untreated, 43 patients had Ann Arbor stage IV disease, and 42 patients had marrow involvement.
