TL;DR: Tie2-Cre transgenic mice are a new genetic tool for the analyses of endothelial cell-lineage and endothelialcell-specific gene targeting and lacZ staining in Tie2- Cre;CAG-CAT-Z embryos is consistent with endocardial-mesenchymal transformation in the atrioventricular canal and outflow tract regions.

TL;DR: The structure of the sterol 26-hydroxylase cDNA reveals it to be a mitochondrial cytochrome P-450, and blotting experiments revealed that the mRNA for this enzyme is expressed in many tissues and that it is encoded by a low copy number gene in the rabbit genome.

TL;DR: This work proposes that the molecular address for proteins targeted to lipid domains is a lipid shell, which is high in cholesterol and sphingolipids, have a light buoyant density, and function in both endocytosis and cell signaling.
Abstract: The surface membrane of cells is studded with morphologically distinct regions, or domains, like microvilli, cell-cell junctions, and coated pits. Each of these domains is specialized for a particular function, such as nutrient absorption, cell-cell communication, and endocytosis. Lipid domains, which include caveolae and rafts, are one of the least understood membrane domains. These domains are high in cholesterol and sphingolipids, have a light buoyant density, and function in both endocytosis and cell signaling. A major mystery, however, is how resident molecules are targeted to lipid domains. Here, we propose that the molecular address for proteins targeted to lipid domains is a lipid shell.

TL;DR: Chronic renal failure may be accompanied by reversible sympathetic activation, which appears to be mediated by an afferent signal arising in the failing kidneys.
Abstract: Background. Hypertension is a frequent complication of chronic renal failure, but its causes are not fully understood. There is indirect evidence that increased activity of the sympathetic nervous system might contribute to hypertension in patients with end-stage renal disease, but sympathetic-nerve discharge has not been measured directly in patients or animals with chronic renal failure. Methods. We recorded the rate of postganglionic sympathetic-nerve discharge to the blood vessels in skeletal muscle by means of microelectrodes inserted into the peroneal nerve in 18 patients with native kidneys who were undergoing long-term treatment with hemodialysis (of whom 14 had hypertension), 5 patients receiving hemodialysis who had undergone bilateral nephrectomy (of whom 1 had hypertension), and 11 normal subjects. Results. The mean (±SE) rate of sympathetic-nerve discharge was 2.5 times higher in the patients receiving hemodialysis who had not undergone nephrectomy than in the normal subjects (58±3 v...

TL;DR: There have been no significant increases in survival without neonatal and long-term morbidity among VLBW infants between 1997 and 2002, and it is speculated that to improve survival without morbidity requires determining, disseminating, and applying best practices using therapies currently available, and also identifying new strategies and interventions.
