Abstract: This paper reports on the PAN 2014 evaluation lab which hosts three shared tasks on plagiarism detection, author identification, and author profiling. To improve the reproducibility of shared tasks in general, and PAN’s tasks in particular, the Webis group developed a new web service called TIRA, which facilitates software submissions. Unlike many other labs, PAN asks participants to submit running softwares instead of their run output. To deal with the organizational overhead involved in handling software submissions, the TIRA experimentation platform helps to significantly reduce the workload for both participants and organizers, whereas the submitted softwares are kept in a running state. This year, we addressed the matter of responsibility of successful execution of submitted softwares in order to put participants back in charge of executing their software at our site. In sum, 57 softwares have been submitted to our lab; together with the 58 software submissions of last year, this forms the largest collection of softwares for our three tasks to date, all of which are readily available for further analysis. The report concludes with a brief summary of each task.

Abstract: A search has been performed, using the full 20.3 fb(-1) data sample of 8 TeV proton-proton collisions collected in 2012 with the ATLAS detector at the LHC, for photons originating from a displaced vertex due to the decay of a neutral long-lived particle into a photon and an invisible particle. The analysis investigates the diphoton plus missing transverse momentum final state, and is therefore most sensitive to pair production of long-lived particles. The analysis technique exploits the capabilities of the ATLAS electromagnetic calorimeter to make precise measurements of the flight direction, as well as the time of flight, of photons. No excess is observed over the Standard Model predictions for background. Exclusion limits are set within the context of gauge mediated supersymmetry breaking models, with the lightest neutralino being the next-to-lightest supersymmetric particle and decaying into a photon and gravitino with a lifetime in the range from 250 ps to about 100 ns.

Abstract: This paper outlines the concepts and achievements of our evaluation lab on digital text forensics, PANi¾?13, which called for original research and development on plagiarism detection, author identification, and author profiling. We present a standardized evaluation framework for each of the three tasks and discuss the evaluation results of the altogether 58i¾?submitted contributions. For the first time, instead of accepting the output of software runs, we collected the softwares themselves and run them on a computer cluster at our site. As evaluation and experimentation platform we use TIRA, which is being developed at the Webis Group in Weimar. TIRA can handle large-scale software submissions by means of virtualization, sandboxed execution, tailored unit testing, and staged submission. In addition to the achieved evaluation results, a major achievement of our lab is that we now have the largest collection of state-of-the-art approaches with regard to the mentioned tasks for further analysis at our disposal.

Abstract: A field experiment was conducted in Denmark in order to evaluate the fate of 13 volatile organic compounds (VOCs) that were buried as an artificial fuel source in the unsaturated zone. Compound-specific isotope analysis showed distinct phases in the 13C/12C ratio evolution in VOC vapors within 3 m from the source over 114 days. At day 3 and to a lesser extent at day 6, the compounds were depleted in 13C by up to -5.7% per hundred with increasing distance from the source compared to the initial source values. This trend can be explained by faster outward diffusion of the molecules with 12C only compared to molecules with a 13C. Then, the isotope profile leveled out, and several compounds started to become enriched in 13C by up to 9.5% per hundred with increasing distance from the source, due to preferential removal of the molecules with 12C only, through biodegradation. Finally, as the amount of a compound diminished in the source, a 13C enrichment was also observed close to the source. The magnitude of isotope fractionation tended to be larger the smaller the mass of the molecule was. This study demonstrates that, in the unsaturated zone, carbon isotope ratios of hydrocarbons are affected by gas-phase diffusion in addition to biodegradation, which was confirmed using a numerical model. Gas-phase diffusion led to shifts in delta(13)C >1% per hundred during the initial days after the spill, and again during the final stages of source volatilization after >75% of a compound had been removed. In between, diffusion has less of an effect, and thus isotope data can be used as an indicator for hydrocarbon biodegradation.
