TL;DR: This paper shows that the profile-based paradigm (where all samples by one author are treated cumulatively) can be very effective surpassing the performance of PAN-2013 winners without using any information from external sources.
Abstract: Authorship verification is one of the most challenging tasks in style-based text categorization. Given a set of documents, all by the same author, and another document of unknown authorship the question is whether or not the latter is also by that author. Recently, in the framework of the PAN-2013 evaluation lab, a competition in authorship verification was organized and the vast majority of submitted approaches, including the best performing models, followed the instance-based paradigm where each text sample by one author is treated separately. In this paper, we show that the profile-based paradigm (where all samples by one author are treated cumulatively) can be very effective surpassing the performance of PAN-2013 winners without using any information from external sources. The proposed approach is fully-trainable and we demonstrate an appropriate tuning of parameter settings for PAN-2013 corpora achieving accurate answers especially when the cost of false negatives is high.

TL;DR: The authors survey current notions of social and cultural presence as they may help the evaluation of cultural heritage projects and argue that cultural heritage requires specialized evaluation, as key issues both connect and separate the aims of presence researchers and cultural heritage experts.
Abstract: This paper surveys current notions of social and cultural presence as they may help the evaluation of cultural heritage projects. We argue that cultural heritage requires specialized evaluation, as key issues both connect and separate the aims of presence researchers and cultural heritage experts. To support this argument, three case studies of virtual heritage evaluations are summarized, and recommendations made as to how experimental design and evaluation may be improved for future projects.

TL;DR: In this paper, the authors trace the similar paths and common characteristics of British and Greek tramp-shipping companies over the last 130 years through a comparative and international perspective, finding that despite the tendency of companies to adopt corporate and managerial forms, families remained first and foremost family firms and that the strength and the viability of these firms were networks, on a local, national and international level.
Abstract: This article traces the similar paths and common characteristics of British and Greek tramp-shipping companies over the last 130 years through a comparative and international perspective. Despite the tendency of companies to adopt corporate and managerial forms, British and Greek tramp-shipping firms remained first and foremost family firms. The strength and the viability of these firms were networks, on a local, national and international level – networks whose cohesion was based on trust and a particular business culture that was developed in the maritime regions whence they came, centred on family firms involved in international business.

TL;DR: An investigation into the occurrence of trihalomethanes (THMs) in public water supplies in Greece concludes that brominated THMs dominated and existed at the highest concentration levels, whereas chloroform was the least prevalent compound, while in all the other cases the opposite was observed.
