TL;DR: An analytical method based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry for the simultaneous determination of the most frequently used acidic pharmaceutical residues, ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and ketoprofen and phenolic endocrine disruptors, bisphenol (BPA), triclosan (TCS), nonylphenol
Abstract: This article presents an analytical method based on solid-phase extraction (SPE) and gas chromatography coupled with mass spectrometry for the simultaneous determination of the most frequently used acidic pharmaceutical residues, ibuprofen, diclofenac, naproxen and ketoprofen (KFN), and phenolic endocrine disruptors, bisphenol (BPA), triclosan (TCS), nonylphenol, nonylphenol monoethoxylate and nonylphenol diethoxylate, in wastewater and sewage sludge samples. In the first phase of the study, each compound has been characterized individually and afterwards in mixture as a trimethylsilyl derivative in order to identify the characteristic ions (m/z ratio) constituting the mass spectrum and to choose the ions for quantification and confirmation. Subsequently, derivatization was evaluated by testing different variables such as the volume of the derivatization solvent bis(trimethylsilyl)trifluoroacetamide and the effect of each catalyst, pyridine and 1% trimethyl chlorosilane, in the derivatized solution. For the analysis of wastewater samples, two commercial SPE cartridges, C18 and Oasis HLB, were compared for their extraction efficiency of the target compounds. The key parameter of extraction procedure included the effect of pH (2.5, 5.3 and 7) of the loading solution. For solid samples, parameters such as the extracted biomass, the volume of the extraction organic solvent and the effect of matrix interferences in chromatographic analysis were evaluated. By using C18 cartridges as purification procedure and ultrasound sonication, satisfactory mean relative recoveries with BPA-d16 and meclofenamic acid as surrogates were obtained ranging from 91% to 117% for wastewater and 84% to 107% for sewage sludge samples. Nine-point calibration of the standard mixture was performed by linear regression analysis with a correlation coefficient >0.99 for all the tested compounds. Limits of detection for the developed methods were established between 0.3 (KFN) and 14.8 (BPA) ng L−1, and 15.0 (TCS) and 32.9 (BPA) ng g−1 for wastewater and sewage sludge, respectively. Application to real samples of the wastewater treatment plant in Athens, the capital of Greece, demonstrated the presence of all tested compounds in most of the samples.

TL;DR: The CLIMSAVE platform as mentioned in this paper is a participatory integrated assessment (IA) tool that combines knowledge from diverse scientific disciplines, take account of the value and importance of stakeholder 'lay insight' and facilitate a two-way iterative process of exploration of 'what if's' to enable decision-makers to test ideas and improve their understanding of the complex issues surrounding adaptation to climate change.
Abstract: Climate change will affect all sectors of society and the environment at all scales, ranging from the continental to the national and local. Decision-makers and other interested citizens need to be able to access reliable science-based information to help them respond to the risks of climate change impacts and assess opportunities for adaptation. Participatory integrated assessment (IA) tools combine knowledge from diverse scientific disciplines, take account of the value and importance of stakeholder ‘lay insight’ and facilitate a two-way iterative process of exploration of ‘what if’s’ to enable decision-makers to test ideas and improve their understanding of the complex issues surrounding adaptation to climate change. This paper describes the conceptual design of a participatory IA tool, the CLIMSAVE IA Platform, based on a professionally facilitated stakeholder engagement process. The CLIMSAVE (climate change integrated methodology for cross-sectoral adaptation and vulnerability in Europe) Platform is a user-friendly, interactive web-based tool that allows stakeholders to assess climate change impacts and vulnerabilities for a range of sectors, including agriculture, forests, biodiversity, coasts, water resources and urban development. The linking of models for the different sectors enables stakeholders to see how their interactions could affect European landscape change. The relationship between choice, uncertainty and constraints is a key cross-cutting theme in the conduct of past participatory IA. Integrating scenario development processes with an interactive modelling platform is shown to allow the exploration of future uncertainty as a structural feature of such complex problems, encouraging stakeholders to explore adaptation choices within real-world constraints of future resource availability and environmental and institutional capacities, rather than seeking the ‘right’ answers.

TL;DR: It is described how sn-grams were applied to authorship attribution, and how SVM classifier for several profile sizes was used, which resulted in better results.
Abstract: In this paper we introduce a concept of syntactic n-grams (sn-grams). Sn-grams differ from traditional n-grams in the manner of what elements are considered neighbors. In case of sn-grams, the neighbors are taken by following syntactic relations in syntactic trees, and not by taking the words as they appear in the text. Dependency trees fit directly into this idea, while in case of constituency trees some simple additional steps should be made. Sn-grams can be applied in any NLP task where traditional n-grams are used. We describe how sn-grams were applied to authorship attribution. SVM classifier for several profile sizes was used. We used as baseline traditional n-grams of words, POS tags and characters. Obtained results are better when applying sn-grams.

TL;DR: From the experiments, it can be argued that touchstroke dynamics can be quite competitive, at least when compared to similar results obtained from keystroke evaluation studies.
Abstract: Keystroke dynamics is a well-investigated behavioural biometric based on the way and rhythm in which someone interacts with a keyboard or keypad when typing characters. This paper explores the potential of this modality but for touchscreen-equipped smartphones. The main research question posed is whether 'touchstroking' can be effective in building the biometric profile of a user, in terms of typing pattern, for future authentication. To reach this goal, we implemented a touchstroke system in the Android platform and executed different scenarios under disparate methodologies to estimate its effectiveness in authenticating the end-user. Apart from typical classification features used in legacy keystroke systems, we introduce two novel ones, namely, speed and distance. From the experiments, it can be argued that touchstroke dynamics can be quite competitive, at least when compared to similar results obtained from keystroke evaluation studies. As far as we are aware of, this is the first time this newly arisen behavioural trait is put into focus. Copyright © 2014 John Wiley & Sons, Ltd.

TL;DR: Calculation of daily loads of the target compounds showed that STP seems to be the major source of NSAIDs to the river, whereas other sources contribute significantly to the occurrence of EDCs.
Abstract: Purpose The presence of four phenolic endocrine disrupting compounds (EDCs: nonylphenol [NP], NP monoethoxylate[NP1EO], bisphenol A [BPA], triclosan, [TCS]) and four nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs: ibuprofen[IBF], ketoprofen [KFN], naproxen [NPX], diclofenac [DCF]) in a Greek river receiving treated municipal wastewater was investigated in this study.
