TL;DR: An efficient version of the RLDA recently presented by Ye to cope with critical ill-posed hyperspectral image classification problems is introduced in the remote sensing community and several LDA-based classifiers are compared theoretically and experimentally with the standard LDA and theRLDA.
Abstract: This paper analyzes the classification of hyperspectral remote sensing images with linear discriminant analysis (LDA) in the presence of a small ratio between the number of training samples and the number of spectral features. In these particular ill-posed problems, a reliable LDA requires one to introduce regularization for problem solving. Nonetheless, in such a challenging scenario, the resulting regularized LDA (RLDA) is highly sensitive to the tuning of the regularization parameter. In this context, we introduce in the remote sensing community an efficient version of the RLDA recently presented by Ye to cope with critical ill-posed problems. In addition, several LDA-based classifiers (i.e., penalized LDA, orthogonal LDA, and uncorrelated LDA) are compared theoretically and experimentally with the standard LDA and the RLDA. Method differences are highlighted through toy examples and are exhaustively tested on several ill-posed problems related to the classification of hyperspectral remote sensing images. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the presented RLDA technique and point out the main properties of other analyzed LDA techniques in critical ill-posed hyperspectral image classification problems.

TL;DR: A new class of E26 transformation-specific (ETS)-fusion-negative tumors defined by mutations in epigenetic regulators, as well as alterations in pathways not previously implicated in prostate cancer, such as the spliceosome pathway are identified.
Abstract: Comprehensive genomic characterization of prostate cancer has identified recurrent alterations in genes involved in androgen signaling, DNA repair, and PI3K signaling, among others. However, larger and uniform genomic analysis may identify additional recurrently mutated genes at lower frequencies. Here we aggregate and uniformly analyze exome sequencing data from 1,013 prostate cancers. We identify and validate a new class of E26 transformation-specific (ETS)-fusion-negative tumors defined by mutations in epigenetic regulators, as well as alterations in pathways not previously implicated in prostate cancer, such as the spliceosome pathway. We find that the incidence of significantly mutated genes (SMGs) follows a long-tail distribution, with many genes mutated in less than 3% of cases. We identify a total of 97 SMGs, including 70 not previously implicated in prostate cancer, such as the ubiquitin ligase CUL3 and the transcription factor SPEN. Finally, comparing primary and metastatic prostate cancer identifies a set of genomic markers that may inform risk stratification.

TL;DR: In this article, a planar microcavity photon mode strongly coupled to a semiconductor inter-subband transition in presence of a two-dimensional electron gas is described. And the quantum properties of the ground state (a two-mode squeezed vacuum), which can be tuned in situ by changing the value of the Rabi frequency, e.g., through an electrostatic gate.
Abstract: We present a quantum description of a planar microcavity photon mode strongly coupled to a semiconductor intersubband transition in presence of a two-dimensional electron gas. We show that, in this kind of system, the vacuum Rabi frequency ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{R}$ can be a significant fraction of the intersubband transition frequency ${\ensuremath{\omega}}_{12}$. This regime of ultrastrong light-matter coupling is enhanced for long-wavelength transitions, because for a given doping density, effective mass and number of quantum wells, the ratio ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{R}∕{\ensuremath{\omega}}_{12}$ increases as the square root of the intersubband emission wavelength. We characterize the quantum properties of the ground state (a two-mode squeezed vacuum), which can be tuned in situ by changing the value of ${\ensuremath{\Omega}}_{R}$, e.g., through an electrostatic gate. We finally point out how the tunability of the polariton quantum vacuum can be exploited to generate correlated photon pairs out of the vacuum via quantum electrodynamics phenomena reminiscent of the dynamical Casimir effect.

TL;DR: A novel modified TSVM classifier designed for addressing ill-posed remote-sensing problems is proposed that is able to mitigate the effects of suboptimal model selection and can address multiclass cases.
Abstract: This paper introduces a semisupervised classification method that exploits both labeled and unlabeled samples for addressing ill-posed problems with support vector machines (SVMs). The method is based on recent developments in statistical learning theory concerning transductive inference and in particular transductive SVMs (TSVMs). TSVMs exploit specific iterative algorithms which gradually search a reliable separating hyperplane (in the kernel space) with a transductive process that incorporates both labeled and unlabeled samples in the training phase. Based on an analysis of the properties of the TSVMs presented in the literature, a novel modified TSVM classifier designed for addressing ill-posed remote-sensing problems is proposed. In particular, the proposed technique: 1) is based on a novel transductive procedure that exploits a weighting strategy for unlabeled patterns, based on a time-dependent criterion; 2) is able to mitigate the effects of suboptimal model selection (which is unavoidable in the presence of small-size training sets); and 3) can address multiclass cases. Experimental results confirm the effectiveness of the proposed method on a set of ill-posed remote-sensing classification problems representing different operative conditions

TL;DR: In this paper, a description of the software algorithms developed for the CMS tracker both for reconstructing charged-particle trajectories in proton-proton interactions and for using the resulting tracks to estimate the positions of the LHC luminous region and individual primary-interaction vertices is provided.
Abstract: A description is provided of the software algorithms developed for the CMS tracker both for reconstructing charged-particle trajectories in proton-proton interactions and for using the resulting tracks to estimate the positions of the LHC luminous region and individual primary-interaction vertices. Despite the very hostile environment at the LHC, the performance obtained with these algorithms is found to be excellent. For tt events under typical 2011 pileup conditions, the average track-reconstruction efficiency for promptly-produced charged particles with transverse momenta of p_T > 0.9GeV is 94% for pseudorapidities of |η| < 0.9 and 85% for 0.9 < |η| < 2.5. The inefficiency is caused mainly by hadrons that undergo nuclear interactions in the tracker material. For isolated muons, the corresponding efficiencies are essentially 100%. For isolated muons of p_T = 100GeV emitted at |η| < 1.4, the resolutions are approximately 2.8% in p_T, and respectively, 10μm and 30μm in the transverse and longitudinal impact parameters. The position resolution achieved for reconstructed primary vertices that correspond to interesting pp collisions is 10–12μm in each of the three spatial dimensions. The tracking and vertexing software is fast and flexible, and easily adaptable to other functions, such as fast tracking for the trigger, or dedicated tracking for electrons that takes into account bremsstrahlung.
