TL;DR: Using Akaike's information criterion, three examples of statistical data are reanalyzed and show reasonably definite conclusions in this paper, one is concerned with the multiple comparison problem for the means in normal populations.
Abstract: Using Akaike's information criterion, three examples of statistical data are reanalyzed and show reasonably definite conclusions. One is concerned with the multiple comparison problem for the means in normal populations. The second is concerned with the grouping of the categories in a contingency table. The third is concerned with the multiple comparison problem for the analysis of variance by the iogit model in contingency tables, Finite correction of Akaike's information criterionis also proposed.

Abstract: We report new measurements of the asymmetry in the deep-inelastic scattering of longitudinally polarized electrons by longitudinally polarized protons in the kinematic range 2 < or = ..omega.. < or = 10, 1 < or = Q/sup 2/ < or = 4 (GeV/c)/sup 2/, and 2 < or = W < or = 4 GeV. We compare our results with the Bjorken sum rule and with several theoretical models of the internal spin structure of the proton.

TL;DR: The existence of a cytokinin biosynthetic pathway not related to tRNA degradation is reported, showing that 5′-AMP is the actual acceptor molecule for the isopentenyl group and suggesting that the biosynthesis of cytokinins in higher plants may proceed in a similar fashion.
Abstract: ISOPENTENYLADENINE (i6Ade) and closely related derivatives occur naturally either as free bases or as constituents of tRNA1,2. Although these cytokinins have been detected in various organisms, it is still not clear whether they are produced by the degradation of tRNA or whether they are synthesised by some pathway not involving tRNA. A spore germination inhibitor, discadenine, isolated from Dictyostelium discoideum was found to be an i6Ade derivative with a 3-amino-3-carboxypropyl group in the 3 position3—the cells contained a large quantity of free i6Ade, presumably a precursor of discadenine4. These results led us to investigate the cell-free biosynthesis of i6Ade in this organism. We report here the existence of a cytokinin biosynthetic pathway not related to tRNA degradation, showing that 5′-AMP is the actual acceptor molecule for the isopentenyl group. Our findings suggest that the biosynthesis of cytokinin in higher plants may proceed in a similar fashion.

TL;DR: In this article, a method for finding the conserved quantities of non-conservative holonomic dynamical systems was proposed, based on the differential principle of D'Alembert.
Abstract: In this note we study a method for finding the conserved quantities of nonconservative holonomic dynamical systems. In contrast to the classical Noetherian approach, which is based upon the variational principle of Hamilton, the starting point in this note is based on the differential principle of D'Alembert which is equally valid for conservative and nonconservative systems. In the second part of this note, an attempt is made to employ symmetry properties as a vehicle for obtaining approximate solutions of linear and non-linear dynamical systems.

TL;DR: Behavioural abnormalities due to defective membrane electrogenesis have been found in mutants of P. tetraurelia and these show promise of an excellent source of genetic markers.
Abstract: THE swimming behaviour of Paramecium is mostly dependent on the activity of its cilia1, which are regulated by the intra-cellular cation concentration, which in turn is modified by Ca-dependent electrogenesis in the membrane2,3. Behavioural abnormalities due to defective membrane electrogenesis have been found in mutants of P. tetraurelia4–7. We have now found similar abnormalities among a group of behavioural mutants of P. caudatum. These show promise of an excellent source of genetic markers.

TL;DR: "Helium spots," where a significant amount of helium is present in the soil, have been found along the fault zone formed by the 1966 Matsushiro swarm earthquakes, and are interpreted as the results of a diapiric uprise of a magma approximately 1 kilometer in diameter.
Abstract: "Helium spots," where a significant amount of helium is present in the soil [up to 350 parts per million with a high (3)He to (4)He ratio of (8.90 +/- 0.31) x 10(-6)], have been found along the fault zone formed by the 1966 Matsushiro swarm earthquakes. The formation of the "helium spots" and the occurrence of the earthquakes are interpreted as the results of a diapiric uprise of a magma approximately 1 kilometer in diameter.

TL;DR: In this article, the conditions of the drug molecules in the ground mixtures and in the inclusion compounds were investigated using infrared spectroscopy, especially by monitoring the carbonyl stretching bands near 1700 cm-1.
Abstract: Several drugs, such as benzoic acid, aspirin, salicylic acid, and methyl p-hydroxy benzoate, all of which had intermolecular hydrogen bondings, were ground with microcrystalline cellulose respectively. Each drug was ground with β-cyclodextrin too. The inclusion compounds of each drug with β-cyclodextrin were prepared from aqueous solution. When the drugs were ground with β-cyclodextrin, rapid disappearance of X-ray diffraction peaks and that of heat of fusion of drugs, compared with microcrystalline cellulose, were observed. About the inclusion compounds, it was concluded from X-ray diffraction, thermal analysis, and ultraviolet measurements that β-cyclodextrin formed 1 : 1 adduct with each drug and the drug molecules were preffered oriented. The conditions of the drug molecules in the ground mixtures and in the inclusion compounds were investigated using infrared spectroscopy, especially by monitoring the carbonyl stretching bands near 1700 cm-1. When the dispersion of drugs into matrices were completed, the distinct frequency shift of the carbonyl stretching bands was observed in the infrared spectra of these sample. From these results, it would be reasonable to consider that in the ground mixture of microcrystalline cellulose, the drug molecules were present monomolecularly, presumably interacting with cellulose molecules by hydrogen bondings.

TL;DR: In this paper, the photoelectron spectra of CsPbCl 3 and PbBr 3 have been studied and a sharp absorption peak is found at about 3 eV in Pb 2+ ions, and its position shifts toward lower energy as the temperature decreases.
Abstract: Optical absorption and photoelectron spectra of CsPbCl 3 and CsPbBr 3 have been studied. A sharp absorption peak is found at about 3 eV in CsPbCl 3 and 2.4 eV in CsPbBr 3 and its position shifts toward lower energy as the temperature decreases. XPS and UPS measurements of the materials suggest that this first peak is to be assigned mainly to the 6 s →6 p transition in Pb 2+ ions.

TL;DR: In this paper, a new finite element method for treating the stress analysis of a piping system under general loading conditions is proposed. But this method is based on the general thin shell theory incorporating shear and distributed deformations along the pipe length.
Abstract: This paper proposes a new finite element method for treating the stress analysis of a piping system under general loading conditions. This finite element method will be referred as the finite ring method, since its elements are ring-shaped. This finite ring treatment is based on the general thin shell theory incorporating shear and distributed deformations along the pipe length. In this paper, emphasis is given to the theoretical aspects of the method. A comparison with other experimental and theoretical results is presented to substantiate the validity of the present method.

TL;DR: In this paper, backward scattering from monodisperse latex was measured spectroscopically at several volume fractions of the polymer and it was found that this order appeared at higher particle concentration than 0.3 in effective volume fraction.
Abstract: Concentrated monodisperse latex, which is usually described as milky white is tinted with very faint diffuse color. This is due to the presence of the so-called short-range order in it. In this work, backward scattering from this latex was measured spectroscopically at several volume fractions of the polymer and it was found that this order appeared at higher particle concentration than 0.3 in effective volume fraction. As a by-product, this measurement gives a phase diagram of monodisperse latex which is significantly different from the original one presented by Hachisu et al. [J. Colloid Interface Sci.42, 342 (1973)].

TL;DR: The induction by light of geotropic responsiveness in the primary roots of Zea mays L. (cv. Golden Cross Bantam 70) was found to be governed by the “all-or-none law”, and the geotropic response in Zea roots may not be controlled by phytochrome.
Abstract: The induction by light of geotropic responsiveness in the primary roots of Zea mays L. (cv. Golden Cross Bantam 70) was found to be governed by the “all-or-none law”. The response was induced by light energies above a threshold value, but the maximal curvature of geo-stimulated roots was constand irrespective of the light energy above that threshold. The action spectrum for this light effect showed a large peak at 650, a small peak at 410, and a shoulder at 663 nm. The effect of red light was not reversed by far-red light. Thus, the geotropic response in Zea roots may not be controlled by phytochrome.
