Abstract: Endothelin is a potent endothelium-derived vasoconstrictor peptide recently characterized from porcine and human vascular endothelial cells. Here we provide evidence that endothelin activates the dihydropyridine-sensitive, voltage-dependent Ca2+ channel in porcine coronary artery smooth muscle. The vasoconstrictor action of endothelin is efficiently antagonized by low doses of the dihydropyridine Ca2+-channel blocker nicardipine. Endothelin augments the Ca2+-induced contraction in a high-K+ depolarizing solution, markedly enhances high-threshold Ca2+-channel current on the whole-cell patch clamp recording, and causes a sustained increase in the intracellular Ca2+ that is largely dependent on extracellular Ca2+. These findings suggest that endothelin exerts its vasoconstrictor effect by either directly or indirectly activating the voltage-dependent Ca2+ channel.

Abstract: Results of a search for new phenomena in final states with an energetic jet and large missing transverse momentum are reported. The search uses proton-proton collision data corresponding to an integrated luminosity of 36.1 fb−1 at a centre-of-mass energy of 13 TeV collected in 2015 and 2016 with the ATLAS detector at the Large Hadron Collider. Events are required to have at least one jet with a transverse momentum above 250 GeV and no leptons (e or μ). Several signal regions are considered with increasing requirements on the missing transverse momentum above 250 GeV. Good agreement is observed between the number of events in data and Standard Model predictions. The results are translated into exclusion limits in models with pair-produced weakly interacting dark-matter candidates, large extra spatial dimensions, and supersymmetric particles in several compressed scenarios.

Abstract: Charge ordering and orbital ordering in ${\mathrm{La}}_{0.5}{\mathrm{Sr}}_{1.5}{\mathrm{MnO}}_{4}$ have been investigated by using synchrotron x-ray diffraction. The alternating pattern of ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{3+}/{\mathrm{Mn}}^{4+}$ in real space is observed directly by making use of their anomalous dispersion. The first clear evidence of the orbital ordering of ${e}_{g}$ electrons on ${\mathrm{Mn}}^{3+}$ is also presented based on the measurements of ATS (anisotropy of the tensor of susceptibility) reflection near the Mn $K$-absorption edge. The present observations indicate that the charge ordering and orbital ordering occur simultaneously at a transition temperature higher than that of the spin ordering.
