Abstract: We report total-energy electronic structure calculations that provide energetics of encapsulation of ${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$ in the carbon nanotube and electronic structures of the resulting carbon peapods. We find that the encapsulating process is exothermic for the $(10,10)$ nanotube, whereas the processes are endothermic for the $(8,8)$ and $(9,9)$ nanotubes, indicative that the minimum radius of the nanotube for the encapsulation is 6.4 \AA{}. We also find that the ${\mathrm{C}}_{60}@(10,10)$ is a metal with multicarriers each of which distributes either along the nanotube or on the ${\mathrm{C}}_{60}$ chain. This unusual feature is due to the nearly free electron state that is inherent to hierarchical solids with sufficient space inside.

Abstract: We isolated a novel bHLH protein gene Mesp2 (for mesoderm posterior 2) that cross-hybridizes with Mesp1 expressed in the early mouse mesoderm. Mesp2 is expressed in the rostral presomitic mesoderm, but down-regulated immediately after the formation of the segmented somites. To determine the function of MesP2 protein (MesP2) in somitogenesis, we generated Mesp2-deficient mice by gene targeting. The homozygous Mesp2 (-/-) mice died shortly after birth and had fused vertebral columns and dorsal root ganglia, with impaired sclerotomal polarity. The earliest defect in the homozygous embryos was a lack of segmented somites. Their disruption of the metameric features, altered expression of Mox-1, Pax-1, and Dll1, and lack of expression of Notch1, Notch2, and FGFR1 suggested that MesP2 controls sclerotomal polarity by regulating the signaling systems mediated by notch-delta and FGF, which are essential for segmentation.

Abstract: Differential measurements of elliptic flow (v(2)) for Au+Au and Cu+Cu collisions at root s(NN)=200 GeV are used to test and validate predictions from perfect fluid hydrodynamics for scaling of v(2) with eccentricity, system size, and transverse kinetic energy (KET). For KET equivalent to m(T)-m up to similar to 1 GeV the scaling is compatible with hydrodynamic expansion of a thermalized fluid. For large values of KET mesons and baryons scale separately. Quark number scaling reveals a universal scaling of v(2) for both mesons and baryons over the full KET range for Au+Au. For Au+Au and Cu+Cu the scaling is more pronounced in terms of KET, rather than transverse momentum.

Abstract: Here we summarize the physical properties of the newly discovered Fe-chalcogenide superconductors. The Fe-chalcogenide superconductors are of great interest because they are the simplest Fe-based superconductors. Furthermore, Fe chalcogenides show a huge pressure effect on their superconducting properties. The origin of the high transition temperature was discussed with change in both the crystal structure and magnetism. Advances in the thin-film and superconducting-wire fabrication are also described.

Abstract: Retinal, choroidal and scleral imaging by using swept-source optical coherence tomography (SS-OCT) with a 1-microm band probe light, and high-contrast and three-dimensional (3D) imaging of the choroidal vasculature are presented. This SS-OCT has a measurement speed of 28,000 A-lines/s, a depth resolution of 10.4 microm in tissue, and a sensitivity of 99.3 dB. Owing to the high penetration of the 1-microm probe light and the high sensitivity of the system, the in vivo sclera of a healthy volunteer can be observed. A software-based algorithm of scattering optical coherence angiography (S-OCA) is developed for the high-contrast and 3D imaging of the choroidal vessels. The S-OCA is used to visualize the 3D choroidal vasculature of the in vivo human macula and the optic nerve head. Comparisons of S-OCA with several other angiography techniques including Doppler OCA, Doppler OCT, fluorescein angiography, and indocyanine green angiography are also presented.
