Abstract: A search for squarks and gluinos in final states containing high-p T jets, missing transverse momentum and no electrons or muons is presented. The data were recorded in 2012 by the ATLAS experiment in s√=8 TeV proton-proton collisions at the Large Hadron Collider, with a total integrated luminosity of 20.3 fb−1. Results are interpreted in a variety of simplified and specific supersymmetry-breaking models assuming that R-parity is conserved and that the lightest neutralino is the lightest supersymmetric particle. An exclusion limit at the 95% confidence level on the mass of the gluino is set at 1330 GeV for a simplified model incorporating only a gluino and the lightest neutralino. For a simplified model involving the strong production of first- and second-generation squarks, squark masses below 850 GeV (440 GeV) are excluded for a massless lightest neutralino, assuming mass degenerate (single light-flavour) squarks. In mSUGRA/CMSSM models with tan β = 30, A 0 = −2m 0 and μ > 0, squarks and gluinos of equal mass are excluded for masses below 1700 GeV. Additional limits are set for non-universal Higgs mass models with gaugino mediation and for simplified models involving the pair production of gluinos, each decaying to a top squark and a top quark, with the top squark decaying to a charm quark and a neutralino. These limits extend the region of supersymmetric parameter space excluded by previous searches with the ATLAS detector.

Abstract: The iron-containing nitrile hydratase (NHase) is a photoreactive enzyme that is inactivated in the dark because of persistent association with NO and activated by photo-dissociation of NO. The crystal structure at 1.7 A resolution and mass spectrometry revealed the structure of the non-heme iron catalytic center in the nitrosylated state. Two Cys residues coordinated to the iron were post-translationally modified to Cys-sulfenic and -sulfinic acids. Together with another oxygen atom of the Ser ligand, these modifications induced a claw setting of oxygen atoms capturing an NO molecule. This unprecedented structure is likely to enable the photo-regulation of NHase and will provide an excellent model for designing photo-controllable chelate complexes and, ultimately, proteins.

Abstract: An overview is provided of the cancer chemoprevention actions of phenolic antioxidants and 6-ethoxy-1,2-dihydro-2,2,4-trimethylquinoline (ethoxyquin). These agents principally appear to exert their beneficial effects through induction of phase II drug-metabolizing enzymes such as glutathione S-transferase (GST). The requirement for oxidative metabolism of the synthetic antioxidants to carbonyl-containing compounds, including quinones, in order that they can induce gene expression is discussed. Previous work has shown that the basic leucine zipper transcription factor Nrf2 is involved in induction of GST by the phenolic antioxidant butylated hydroxyanisole (BHA). Evidence is provided from a mouse possessing a targeted disruption of the Nrf2 gene that, in murine liver, the transcription factor regulates basal expression of several class Alpha and class Mu GST subunits, but not class Pi GST. In the Nrf2 knock-out mouse, hepatic induction of class Alpha and class Mu GST by BHA and the synthetic antioxidant ethoxyquin is similarly impaired, suggesting that these agents affect gene activation by a related mechanism. Significantly, residual induction of GST by antioxidants is apparent in the Nrf2 mutant mouse, indicating the existence of an alternative mechanism of gene activation.

Abstract: Rechargeable aqueous zinc batteries (RAZB) have been re-evaluated because of the superiority in addressing safety and cost concerns. Nonetheless, the limited lifespan arising from dendritic electrodeposition of metallic Zn hinders their further development. Herein, a metal-organic framework (MOF) was constructed as front surface layer to maintain a super-saturated electrolyte layer on the Zn anode. Raman spectroscopy indicated that the highly coordinated ion complexes migrating through the MOF channels were different from the solvation structure in bulk electrolyte. Benefiting from the unique super-saturated front surface, symmetric Zn cells survived up to 3000 hours at 0.5 mA cm-2 , near 55-times that of bare Zn anodes. Moreover, aqueous MnO2 -Zn batteries delivered a reversible capacity of 180.3 mAh g-1 and maintained a high capacity retention of 88.9 % after 600 cycles with MnO2 mass loading up to 4.2 mg cm-2 .
