TL;DR: An indirect immunofluorescence technique was applied to formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded material from antral tissues of porcine stomach, and the argyrophil G cells, situated predominantly in the middle zone of the gastric glands, all showed positive gastrin immun ofluorescence.
Abstract: An indirect immunofluorescence technique, using anti-human gastrin serum, was applied to formalin-fixed, paraffin-embedded material from antral tissues of porcine stomach. After photographing the result, post-fixation in formalin was followed by the Grimelius silver technique. The argyrophil G cells, situated predominantly in the middle zone of the gastric glands, all showed positive gastrin immunofluorescence. Some weakly fluorescent cells failed to stain by the silver technique, suggesting that the latter is less sensitive than immunofluorescence in that it depends on the presence of the granular storage product.

TL;DR: Activity and protein content were determined throughout the embryonic life of the chick in spinal and sympathetic ganglia and the greatest part of total cholinesterase activity was due to AChE.
Abstract: — Total cholinesterase, acetylcholinesterase, (AChE) and monoamine oxidase (MAO) activity and protein content were determined throughout the embryonic life of the chick in spinal and sympathetic ganglia. The greatest part of total cholinesterase activity was due to AChE. AChE and MAO activity increased in both spinal and sympathetic ganglia very similarly from the 6th to the 12th day of incubation; from this day on a significant divergence occurred, mainly owing to a steady fall in spinal ganglion AChE, which decreased to approximately one tenth of the maximum value. The ratio of MAO activity in sympathetic and spinal ganglia increased from the 8th day onwards and approached 5·0 at hatching. The ratio between sympathetic and spinal ganglia, for AChE, choline acetylase (ChAc) and MAO activity, suggests a relationship between the maturation of the synapse in the sympathetic ganglia and the maximal activity of these enzymes.

TL;DR: A high frequency of Au is found either in populations in which the sanitary conditions are poor or in subjects inWhich the probability of infection is higher than average (subjects living in crowded communities; polytransfused patients ; laboratory staff etc.).
Abstract: The frequency of the Australia antigen in healthy individuals has been determined in different populations. It was found to be around 0.1-0.5~0 among Caucasians in USA and in other European countries [l, 31. Some tropical populations show a much higher frequency of Au positive subjects (up to 20.2% as in Cashinahua, Peru) [3]. Recent data concerning the Italian population show that the frequency of Au positive subjects [Au(l)] is around 0.5-1% [4, 6, 71. By contrast, as discussed below, the frequency of Au(1) among individuals of Sardinian ancestry is much higher [4]. I n these subjects the Au antigen persists for many years without clinical evidence of acute hepatitis. They are usually referred t o as ‘carriers’ of the Australia antigen. They represent a heterogeneous group in which a complex interaction between host and infectious agent is taking place. As in every infectious condition the environmental factors have great importance. Actually a high frequency of Au( 1) is found either in populations in which the sanitary conditions are poor or in subjects in which the probability of infection is higher than average (subjects living in crowded communities; polytransfused patients ; laboratory staff etc.). I n addition to environmental factors also genetic factors may be involved in determining the ‘carrier’ condition. The evidences which emphasize the influence of host factors are mainly the following: (1) The Australia antigen is very common in Down’s syndrome patients, but relatively rare in other mentally retarded children who live in the same institutions [9].

TL;DR: Two interpretations of the finding can be given: Either more than one precursor may participate in the formation of a focus or a differentiation switch may occur during the clonal expansion.
Abstract: 106 splenocytes from primed donors were injected, together with sheep erythrocytes (SRBC), into X-irradiated syngeneic mice. 8 days later the spleens were excised and cut into small fragments, keeping track of their location in the organ. Each fragment was cultured individually for 24 hr in the presence of 14C amino acids and the culture fluids were assayed for antibody activity. The antibody-producing fragments were found to be clustered in few restricted areas (foci) surrounded by negative tissue. The anti-SRBC antibody from single foci was purified by absorption on stroma followed by acid elution. Thereafter, it was subjected to electrophoresis and immunoelectrophoresis. The radioautography of the runs showed a considerable degree of homogeneity. Distinct and sharp spikes were localized in the beta and gamma region. The pattern of each focus is unique from the point of view of the number of spikes and their mobility. Eluates obtained from many pooled fragments gave a broad radioactive smear in beta-gamma region. Many foci synthesized antibody migrating as a single band. This homogeneous protein is probably the product of a clone of cells homogeneously differentiated. However, some foci producing two and probably more antibody bands were also encountered. Two interpretations of the finding can be given. Either more than one precursor may participate in the formation of a focus or a differentiation switch may occur during the clonal expansion.

TL;DR: This paper presented a contrastive analysis of two discourse markers, i.e., the Italian "allora" and the Spanish "entonces", in an audiovisual corpus of L2 Italian.
Abstract: The aim of this paper is to present a first approach to the contrastive analysis of two discourse markers – the Italian "allora" and the Spanish "entonces". The two discourse markers have similar pragmatic functions and similar semantic values acquired in discourse, especially in conversational inter- action. However some differences in these interactional uses explain why Spanish learners of L2 Italian have difficulties in the use of the Italian "allora". Our point of departure is a descriptive analysis of both elements in interactional linguistic contexts. Next we examine "allora"’s functions in an audiovisual corpus of L2 Italian.

Abstract: The 9-phenyl thiaxanthyl radical has been obtained from the corresponding cation. A complete analysis of its E.S.R. spectrum has been achieved by using some deuterated derivatives as well as computer simulated spectra. The unusual ratio of the ortho/para hyperfine splittings (✠) has been interpreted as due to the occurrence of restricted rotation of the phenyl ring. Molecular orbital calculations indicate that the experimental results may be interpreted by assuming the phenyl ring to be twisted from the heterocyclic plane by an angle of about 72°. No significant differences were observed between the values of the spin density distribution calculated with standard p and d models.

TL;DR: The data suggest that beta adrenergic receptors mediate a tonic vasodilator influence on the mesenteric and skeletal muscle circulations, in which these receptors abound, which seem more consistent with a different local metabolic response than with an uneven density of beta receptors.
Abstract: The effects of blockade and stimulation of beta adrenergic receptors on mesenteric, renal and hindlimb circulations have been investigated in unanesthetized resting dogs. Propranolol and isoproterenol have been used for beta blockade and stimulation, respectively. The changes in oxygen consumption in the hindlimb following beta receptor stimulation have also been studied in some experiments performed under anesthesia.

TL;DR: In this paper, yields and reduced specific viscosities of the products of the sodium tert-butoxide catalyzed hydrogen transfer polymerization at 100°C of acrylamide in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone have been determined as a function of time of polymerization.
Abstract: Yields and reduced specific viscosities of the products of the sodium tert-butoxide catalyzed hydrogen transfer polymerization at 100°C of acrylamide in 1-methyl-2-pyrrolidone have been determined as a function of time of polymerization. The results conclusively prove a stepwise chain growth mechanism since the early stages of the reaction. Die Versuchsergebnisse lassen schon vom Beginn der Reaktion an eindeutig auf einen schrittweisen Kettenwachstumsmechanismus schliesen.

TL;DR: The haematological picture is similar to that observed in other haemolytic anaemias due to unstable haemoglobins and the disease is inherited as a Mendelian co‐dominant, non‐sex‐linked character.
Abstract: Summary Haematological and clinical features of the haemolytic anaemia due to haemoglobin Torino are reported. The haematological picture is similar to that observed in other haemolytic anaemias due to unstable haemoglobins. The disease, present in three members of the same family, is inherited as a Mendelian co-dominant, non-sex-linked character. The disease is caused by the presence of haemoglobin Torino in erythrocytes and sulphonamide can provoke haemolytic crises. Besides the globin abnormality a decrease in porphobilinogen synthesis was demonstrated. Splenectomy improves the haematological state and clinical course.
